Shrews Sack Former Town Boss Hurst
Sunday, 3rd Nov 2024 16:24

Former Blues boss Paul Hurst and his assistant Chris Doig have been sacked by Shrewsbury Town following yesterday’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Salford, the Shrews’ fourth loss on the bounce.

Hurst and Doig returned to the Shropshire club in January having left the club to take over at Town in the summer of 2018, having taken the Shrews to the League One play-off final, their disastrous spell at Portman Road lasting only 15 games and one win.

A statement from the Shrews, who are second bottom of the table, reads: “It is with regret that Shrewsbury Town can confirm we have parted company with head coach Paul Hurst and assistant boss Chris Doig. This decision was made following an emergency board meeting held this morning.

“Paul and Chris returned to the Croud Meadow in January this year and were instrumental in keeping the club in League One last season.

“However, after a run that has seen us win just two of our 19 games this season (a win rate of 10.5 per cent), the board feels a change is needed.

“The chairman would like to thank both Paul and Chris for all their hard work over the past 11 months.

“We would also like to thank them for the outstanding work they did in their first spell – which saw us reach the League One play-off final and the final of the EFL Trophy.

“It was that success that led to the chairman taking responsibility for re-hiring Paul and Chris earlier this year.

“And everyone at the football club is hugely disappointed their second spell hasn’t worked out and we find ourselves in our current position. The search for a new head coach is now underway.”

Between leaving Town and his second stint with the Shrews, Hurst had spells in charge at Scunthorpe and a second stint with Grimsby.

Another reminder of just how far we've come in such a short space of time,as it was only 6 years ago, since Hurst and his terrible signings were presiding at our club.Seems like a distant memory now though, Thank God.

He got rid of established Championship players and overpaid for a boatload of L1 players (which, let me remind you, a lot of fans applauded) and we ended up in L1, fancy that.

TBF, lets remind ourselves that without the disaster that was Paul Hurst, our journey to the Premiership via marmite that is Lambert & Cook wouldn't have been at the hands of KM & all the exciting football & off pitch rebuild we enjoyed in L1 & Champ & now continue to enjoy.
Helped us all appreciate all the more what was their disasters, finally forced a full needed change & rebuild from top down in Chairman, Ownership, players, manager, vision & goals, infrastructure - the rebuild has been spectacular.
We would have remained an under funded & supported, dross of a club playing poor, unexciting football. None of us wanted that.
We needed a collapse and rebuild with KM, new players & management, & like it or not, Hurst was part of that.
OK, stretch to actually thank Hurst, but all part of the exciting & promising journey.

In fairness Westy, before being (a little harshly) sacked by Grimsby he masterminded perhaps the most exciting playoff triumph of all time to get them back in the league. Check out their run in 2022...

As some have pointed out, his approach was lauded when he arrived, and does anyone think the washed up Champ team we had was going to turn around our fortunes....ask Col U?! Reality is he did what he did on a shoestring, and our fortunes changed only when we had new ownership and spent on better players and eventually a better (maybe the best) manager. Why berate the man for doing his best I do not know? He tried and failed, I know I have too !

I think he was out of his depth here. That said he had more going for him than the shockingly incompetent ref on Saturday.

62wasbest. He was made an instant millionaire on his sacking at ITFC.

Hurst would do a lot better without Doig by his side. Would have thought he’d realised by now

No - Town needed a rebuild after the end of Mick's reign, but Hurst wasn't the man for it, paying way over the odds for a bunch of average League 1 players, which condemned us to a few years in. err, League 1.
