Morsy: Never in Doubt That Humphreys Would Have Amazing Season at Wycombe
Tuesday, 29th Apr 2025 12:22 by Kallum Brisset

Town captain Sam Morsy has revealed he would have liked to have seen Cameron Humphreys go on loan to a Championship side in January following his excellent season at Wycombe Wanderers.

Last week, Humphreys was named Wycombe’s Young Player of the Season after contributing seven goals and six assists for the Chairboys in League One since his temporary switch was made last summer.

The on-loan Blues midfielder, who has often been dubbed the ‘Suffolk Messi’ by his new supporters, has the potential to earn a third consecutive promotion in his career at the age of 21 after achieving back-to-back promotions with Town from League One to the Premier League with Wycombe fourth and set to go into the play-offs.

Having taken to being a regular starter for the Buckinghamshire side like a duck to water, Morsy claims he had no worries as to whether Humphreys would succeed, suggesting that a move higher up the pyramid mid-season might have been on the cards.

“He’s having an amazing season which nobody had any doubts that he would,” he said. “Personally, I would have liked to have seen him go to a Championship club in January but the club kept him there.

“He’s doing well there and he’s had an amazing season, hopefully he can get another promotion under his belt but regardless he’s either going to go up automatically or be in the play-offs.

“It’s going to be a great learning curve for him, a full season under his belt and he’s going to come back here a better player.

“I speak to him every now and then, just tracking his progress and him knowing that anything he needs I’m there for him.

“He’s a very mature lad, some younger players you’d have to worry about but he’s not one of those. He’s very focused, a very good player and he’s having the sort of season I expected him to.”

Another Town player who has had an outstanding season is striker Liam Delap, the England youth international scoring 12 goals in his debut campaign in the Premier League since moving from Manchester City last summer.

Morsy admitted that Delap’s form has taken him a little bit by surprise, but says it is clear to see why the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United are showing a strong interest in the in-demand forward.

“He’s had a really good season,” the former Egypt international said. “He was at Hull last season and he did alright by his own admission, but nobody could have expected him to have the season he’s had, in all honesty. He’s scored just as many goals as he did last season.

“He’s having a great season and if you’re scoring a lot of goals for a team closer to the bottom than the top, you’re going to get a lot of attention. He’s very powerful and a very good finisher, he’s going to have a lot of suitors for sure.

“From when I first saw him training, he’s improved a lot. The manager and the coaching staff, that’s probably their biggest quality is that they can really improve players.

“Now you see the clubs he’s linked to, it’s not by accident, it’s because of how well he’s done.”

Asked whether there is a chance Delap may stay at Portman Road, Morsy said: “It’s a possibility. He’s a young lad, he’s got his feet on the ground, his dad was a player, his mum was a physiotherapist and is very switched on.

“He’s got really switched on people around him so they’ll have a think about it and they’ll make the right decision for this time in his career.”

Another striker who has hit the headlines recently is Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, after he announced he was leaving the club after 13 years at the club.

Vardy has gone on to win the Premier League title and the FA Cup with the Foxes, scoring 198 goals and earning 26 caps for England.

Morsy said: “What he’s done is a remarkable achievement. He’s come through the leagues and made a lot of people dream. He’s opened the path for people to do it, because of what he’s done people look at non-league and lower-league players more so he’s done incredible.

“He’s been an amazing player to win the Premier League as well, probably could have moved a number of times but stayed there. He’s played for England, should have played more for England in my opinion, had an amazing career and without being an incredible professional he wouldn’t have done that.

“I know he’s got the reputation for the Red Bulls and whatever but I guarantee he’ll be one of the best professionals around to be competing and playing at his age at the level.

“It’s going to be a sad day for Leicester, I don’t know what he’s going to do next but he’s still playing at a really good level and could continue for a number of years if he wanted to.”

He added: “It's his tenacity, his work rate and he’s got great quality as well – great finishing ability and great movement.

“I look at the winner in him – he's a winner, he’s tenacious, he’s intense, he can carry the team up the pitch because of his willingness and his pressing. I think he’s been a brilliant Premier League striker.”

Cam has certainly filled out and could be an asset for us in the Championship next season.

Agree Sniffer. More than capable in joining the midfield group especially with the 2 loanees gone.

Could be a great replacement for Luongo if he leave at the end of the season

Surely a "must" for our midfield in the Championship. I hope this works out as most of us probably would like.

Morsy and Humphreys together next season, or even if we put in for Cajuste and have him partner with Humphreys, wouldn't say no to either combo

I don't think that he is good enough yet to get a regular game with us, I have seen him 3 times this year and he still loses the ball to strength rather than skill.
Jack Taylor will partner Morsy next season.

The progress and manner of this young man’s development and maturity ought not to come as any surprise ; he’s more than adequately shown his tremendous potential and a full season has brought superb results.
Undoubtedly one for the Town First team squad ,now with a range of skills and understanding to bring rewards in a bright future!

Get him back here next season and I'm sure our coaching staff will further improve him. I don't think he'll be a regular starter from the outset, but will be a great squad player to have.

@Essexnblue - We're gonna need a better center midfield than Jack Taylor and Morsy if we are to push for promotion

Will be assessed in pre season to see how far he has progressed. Very good player with vision and a wide range of passing and a good finisher. Not sure if he's physically up to championship yet and might find it difficult to get a regular start with new players coming in with potential to play Premier league football in the future.

We need to buy a new centre Mid, maybe 2- Morsy and Lounge would be my starting 2 at the moment for next season but they are getting older- 2 games a week etc
We don't know whether Taylor or Humphreys are good enough, (I think we do) but if we find out they are not when the window is closed..... Hopefully an athletic 6 foot 4 beast can come in to dominate and be good enough if we go up.

@mickmills I agree we definitely need 1 or 2 CMs (maybe even 3). I can see the club letting Mass go in the summer, his contract is up and as you say he's getting on a bit and don't think they will have the main two in the center both in their 30s, unless they decide to extend for a year and keep him as emergency backup before becoming a coach (like Sone did).

Still not sure on Taylor, I think he will go if McKenna can get enough replacements in as I don't think he will want to be another bench player all season

So CMs next season for me (in no order) will be Morsy, Humphreys, NEW CM 1 (hopefully Cajuste who we need to try put in for), NEW CM 2, NEW CM 3 (or Taylor)

I think a problem we gave in general next season is that whilst players were willing to be a squad player in the EPL, they may be reluctant in the Champs. You can argue that’s specially true for those who were starters in our Promo team to the PL such as Woolfie, CamB, George and maybe also Wes, Chappers. Smodz also won’t want to be a rotation player. And Jack T imo needs first team football.

Much will depend on who we can retain. IF Dara and Jacob were sold then easier for Woolie and CamB to stay and vice versa. Same for Liam vis George Likewise will CW want another season as back up in a lower level? Re midfield I really hope we can tempt Jens to sign. Can then see Mass leaving and I assume KP but you never know. He may not have other choices after an injury hit season and we do need another stopper to back up Sam (or vice versa).

All told a lot of questions and moving parts for KM and MA to sort out this summer - and the season still has a month to run !!!

Cajuste is good but surely expensive
Can he play twice a week? Maybe In a lower intensity league yes but I think signing him would not be 'one for the future'

I'm just astounded at comments on here and the complete lack of ambition.
People saying Morsy and Luongo or Morsy and Taylor should be our main midfield, do we want to go back to league 1? How are they competing to a promotion chasing level with an eye on the Prem return, Morsy would be 35 he isn't playing in Prem again, if he is retiring he will prob stay and see out contract if Mckenna stays but if he goes then I'd imagine Morsy goes too.

I think if a Prem league club comes knocking Mckenna goes because he will know if we aren't getting results by Christmas he will be gone, his chips are running out, if he gets a London club he wouldn't have to move home either.
What ambition have some fans got that they want to rely on Morsy, Taylor, Walton, Burns and 6 goal a season Hirst to return us to Prem and establish there.
Sorry to bring bad news but those players and the manager can't stay forever.
My previous post got downmarket which is fine of course but we can only have 25 in squad so who goes if not the band of brothers as you call them and how are those players going to be part of a team that establish the club in Premier league? I hope the owners don't have the same lack of ambition.
Imagine if Luongo and Morsy are our midfield on game 1

Surprise surprise, it's another Lee James post saying everyone involved in our promotion to the prem should be sacked or sold

21 and only playing league1 might be good as championship player but we need to be looking at potential prem players
