Ex-Blues Loanee Godfrey Set For Blades Wednesday, 20th Aug 2025 21:23 Former Blues loanee Ben Godfrey is set to join Sheffield United on loan from Atalanta.
Godfrey, 27, spent the second half of last season on loan with Town, making four starts and one sub appearance in a disappointing spell.
The one-time Everton and Norwich man could be back at Portman Road in a fortnight when the Blades visit Suffolk on Friday 12th September.

Forgot we even had him in the squad last year ....he was awful

Another of our divisional rivals make a signing while we sign nobody. I’m sure there is lots of work going on to get players in but all we seem to do is miss out on targets and we desperately need more depth and quality. KMc thought this guy was premier league level just a few months ago (he was clearly wrong from what we saw) and I’m not saying he is what we need but why is it that we are struggling so much to make signings ? If we wait until the last few days of the window we will panic and overpay for players we don’t necessarily want. Look at last year when we got Jack Clarke at the last minute and how dreadful he has been since he arrived. Come on MA get the deals over the line please

Prebbs007 - "Another of our divisional rivals make a signing while we sign nobody...." You do know that we have signed six players so far in this transfer window right? Admittedly, David Button might not contribute much. If Sheffield United get the signing of Godfrey over the line, that will also bring them up to six signings too.

FullerFlavour no I had absolutely no idea we had made any signings. Be real. And it’s not really 6 as Jens was here last season and Button doesn’t count. I’m talking about the numerous players we have been (apparently chasing / bidding for) in the last fortnight while others sign players fairly readily it seems. Frustrating is it not ? We’ve lost a lot of match day squad regulars from last seasons premier league group and only brought in a few who could make a genuine impact. I’m worried that we might make poor decisions late in the window when MA told us that we would do business early.

You are complaining that we missed out on a right back (that we don't need) who was rubbish last season? I'm happy to wait for this Norwegian wonder kid A striker to replace Ali, and release Akpom to one of the no.10 slots (I hear mitrovic is looking for a club) We are after a CM too, maybe a Brownhill Then a lb on loan for the season, or a cb so that Greaves can cover lb. Job done

No Fermi. Read what I said. I defo don’t want Godfrey. You mention a lot of players/positions there that we are looking at. That’s my point. There’s a lot of looking without any signings and we need them right now as shown by our start to the season. A lucky point at Brum, a joke performance at Bromley and unable to win at home (although it was a slight improvement)

Prebbs007...So why did you claim we've signed nobody if you do know we have?
Fermi_Parradox added 06:44 - Aug 21
But Boro signing Godfry is unrelated to us not signing other targets. They are different situations, with different moving parts. Every single season transfer deals get done at the end of the window. This is more impacting on the parachute team's as it has a lot to do with the premier teams shuffling squads and holding on. The issue is the window should close at the end of July

Prebbs I would imagine it’s easier to sign crap players, and that’s exactly what Godfrey was! I just think when you are after better players it gets complicated, big clubs like Newcastle are struggling too! We ain’t the draw we were last season yet we want to get in equal or better players than we signed at the start of last season, I can see why that presents problems just not sure why it’s not obvious to others! It is however a bit concerning, But not totally unexpected!

After the Tottenham home performance by Godfrey I thought he might have given up playing.

Fuller. As I clearly said, it lease read before making daft comments. I’m taking about the last couple of weeks where we have been talking to many players / agents and signed nobody not the 6 (effectively 4) from earlier in the window.

Awful loan signing. Why are we struggling to attract and sign anyone permanent these past few weeks? Has Ashton ran out of oil??

After the Tottenham game i said he should never play for the club again he completely gave up a disgrace.

This loan phenomenon seems to hark back to the Jewell and McCarthy eras...do we really need any more loanees...what has happened to our once vaunted youth system, which under Sir Bobby was the best in Britain ?

What is this absolute baboon in the comments above smoking? Signings don't count if they've previously been with us??

Being a bit harsh on Godfrey...he made 1 full appearance for us in the Premiership and it was a nightmare, not used at that level again. Johnson was poor on a number of games early in the season at RB but kept being played particularly further up the right as the season progressed where he was somewhat better.

Calm down there chaps. We have zero idea as to what's going on behind the scenes and oh, don't believe everything you read!

We need to remember that we have player to have a reasonable team and we are looking for players to upgrade the team which is very difficult given financial constraints, their clubs letting them go for a reasonable fee and also them wanting to play in the championship. We do not want player that are not an improvement. Just trust the management and back the team.

Last season we were paying about 75k wage contribution per week for him, waste of money, that was the closest thing to stealing a living.
jazzback added 20:24 - Aug 21
I'm not worried about having not signed anyone else just yet. Players we are after are probably keeping options open to see what happens. I would like the window closed before the season starts. Judge how good we have been once September gets here
