Town to Face Espanyol During Spanish Training Camp
Friday, 25th Sep 2026 13:57

Town have confirmed they will play a behind-closed-doors game with La Liga Espanyol next week during a Spanish training camp.

Manager Gary O’Neil revealed the players not on international duty would be going away when speaking about his plans for the hiatus prior to the Everton match.

“The guys will have a few days off,” he said. “We will get together for that block in the middle for some training away and then we will have a normal week running into Fulham.

“Some will be back even later than that, some are back as late as the Wednesday before Fulham.

“I don’t like international breaks as you are always looking at the line-ups and seeing who is playing and if they have come off at any point.

“So I’ll be at home having my fingers crossed for three weeks hoping that everyone makes it through their games OK.”

The Espanyol game will be played next Friday with an 11am kick-off at their RCDE Stadium. The club say the match won’t be streamed online.

Seems a no brainer for the club. More minutes for those available against a good top flight Spanish side :)

Behind closed doors?

I'd have been up for a jolly in Spain :(

This international break is ridiculous. No fans that I know of want it. It feels like the Nations League has been set up just to please advertisers and make money. It should be scrapped.

Well, at least it will be something reasonably competitive for those left behind. Espanyol, currently 15th in La Liga, played 7 and 7 points.

Oh and of course a chance for the players ( especially those that haven't been there ), to see the wonderful city of Barcelona!

Presumably Espanyol have a few key players away too, but good for others to get a game and some sunshine.

There is too much football for top players now, this break in crazy, but money is king it seems.

Not sure if this is a good thing in my experience of summer training camps abroad they rarely bear fruit in terms of results when players return to league games. Football can be mentally as well as physically tiring and i know for a fact players would rather be with their families. We have just spent millions of pounds on a new training ground why can't we use it.
