Newell Spoke to Town

Luton manager Mike Newell has revealed that he was interviewed regarding the vacant managerial positions at Town and Derby County. The former Blackburn striker says he could have taken the Pride Park job but chose to remain with the Hatters.

Newell confirmed that he has spoken to the two clubs: "Yes, I've had interviews - at Derby and Ipswich.

"Let's just say, if I wanted to be Derby manager I would have been Derby manager by now, but I wanted to stay at Luton."

Newell's claims have been denied by Derby managing director Mike Horton who says he was not offered the job.

The former Hartlepool boss is not understood to have made the Town shortlist, but was widely tipped as a potential target after Joe Royle left the club by mutual consent.
