Penney Drops From Running

Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan has confirmed that his club has received no approach from Town for manager Dave Penney. The Blues had been reported to have made contact with South Yorkshire side regarding Penney as part of their search for a successor to Joe Royle.

Ryan said: "Dave knows we will never stand in his way after what he has done for this club as a player and then as a manager and coach.

"He has two years remaining on his contract and if Ipswich Town or any other clubs have real intentions on our manager then they will have to look at a serious compensation package.

"But as a club, we have heard nothing and Dave hasn't said anything. We have serious ambitions here and I'd be surprised if he jumped ships to join Ipswich as we have more potential in future seasons."

Town are now not thought to be looking any further than their own staff for the new management team with Jim Magilton and Bryan Klug expected to be confirmed in their new positions on Monday.

Meanwhile, Colin Calderwood has been explaining his reasons for choosing to take the manager's job at Nottingham Forest having been interviewed by the Blues earlier last week: "Forest and Ipswich are similar clubs - they have good youth policies and infrastructures to be better than where they are at the moment.

"The fact Nottingham Forest decided to offer me the job quickly was the thing. I wouldn't allow myself to sit and deliberate.

"This is a fantastic job and a super club and if you did a straw poll of managers and coaches, the vast majority would want to work for Nottingham Forest."
