McKenna: Humphreys a Player We Rate Very Highly
Friday, 9th Jan 2026 16:53

Boss Kieran McKenna says midfielder Cameron Humphreys, who has joined League One promotion hopefuls Huddersfield Town for the rest of the season, has been unlucky not to have played more regularly for the Blues during the first half of the campaign.

Humphreys, whose contract is up in the summer but with the club having an option for a further season, has made three brief Championship sub appearances this season, in addition to his only start in the Carabao Cup.

The 22-year-old’s former loan club Wycombe Wanderers were also keen, while we understand Championship Oxford United made an approach but with their management situation currently unsettled with former Chairboys boss and one-time Town academy player and coach Matt Bloomfield the current frontrunner.

The move to the Terriers sees Humphreys reunited with Lee Grant, who was a first-team coach at Town prior to becoming manager of the West Yorkshire club, who are fourth in the League One table, in the summer.

“He is a player we think very highly of,” McKenna said. “He’s been unlucky this year, I have to say. You look at our injury record and I think we have had by far the best injury record of anyone in the Championship.

“A couple of young players like Cameron and Elkan [Baggott] have never been far from the team and they are an important part of the group.

“The midfielders have rarely missed a day’s training and especially in Jens [Cajuste]’s case, who had more issues last year, he’s been in a really good spot physically. And the same with the centre-halves - I don’t think the three of them have missed a day.

“It’s been a little bit harder to get Cameron the minutes that he deserves and we would want for him. We knew if we got to January and that was still the case, we would look at the option of him going out on loan.

“He’s going to a really good League One club with a really good playing style and a manager who he really knows. You never make the decision based solely on that, but it can help with the settling in period.

“They have got some big games coming up and I think he's going to be an important part of their team from day one. It made sense and it was good to get it done early.”

McKenna says Baggott could also be sent out on loan in the second half of the season, while midfielder Fin Barbrook could be sent for another spell.

As reported last month, Sheffield United are keen on Harry Clarke, who is yet to play for the Blues this season, to return to Bramall Lane on loan having spent the second half of 2024/25 with the Blades.

I like Humphrey’s but sadly he isn’t going to get on the subs bench let alone the pitch. It’s very disheartening for the lads coming through the academy. If we were in league one he would probably get more chances but if we make the PL he won’t get anywhere near the 1st team.

Can't understand KM comments about rating him highly. All I would say, is play him !!!

It's a fact that if he was rated as highly as KM say's, he'd be playing first team football quite regularly here. Still quite young of course, but there are numerous younger players playing first team football at higher levels around the globe. Time is still on his side, but not lots of it.

Lots of teams with no money would like him but wouldn't buy him so he will be in this limbo. Being left footed we don't have any place available for him. Would benefit from playing at a higher level but we won't give him to a rival Champ team, as he might get them promoted.

We need to be realistic here, and armchair- yes absolutely he would.

Get him a good period t Huddersfield, exercise the option and sell him on. We can protect ourselves with buy back and sell on options, it's very much time for this guy to play some football.

Bazza8564, yes totally agree, if he still has improvement in him, he's not going to find it kicking his heels here. The same goes for Elkan Baggott and Fin Barbrook.

We all share frustration that so far we’ve not seen what Cam (and Elkan) can do. But Cam is only just 22. We shouldn’t give up on him yet and certainly not talk in terms of selling him.

'Rating him very highly', but not playing him means he's for sale!

Humphries sadly has no future at the club under McKenna who clearly doesn’t trust him to do a job. I’m sure he’ll be snapped up by another Championship club when his loan expires. We haven’t paid big money for him so he doesn’t have to play albeit I personally think he’s got far money quality and ability than some who play regularly.
I’ve said it so many times that we have no pathway for young talent. Arsenal ManCity and other big PL teams are playing players extremely young and they’re proving to be good enough. We have a competitive u21 team with decent facilities but they won’t get a game

honestly believe he is good enough to be back up to Nunez in that 10 role. Good technician, Can create and score goals. doesn't look like its going to happen sadly

I would LOVE him to be playing regularly but unfortunately that's not the case. In the real world he will most likely be sold sooner rather than later. The gaffa obviously doesn't see him as a regular first team choice.
