Burley Three-signs! Thu 16th Sep 1999 17:53 Town manager George Burley today persuaded three of the stars of the season so far to commit to Town for longer periods. Mark Venus has signed an extension keeping him at Town until the end of next season, whilst striking sensation Richard Naylor has signed for Town until 2003 and Wayne Brown until 2002. Good to see George trying to make sure we don't get any more Bobby Petta-esque situations. Richard Wright, however still seems unable to commit himself to the club any further that the end of next season. |
Matt Out? Thu 16th Sep 1999 13:36 Town skipper Matt Holland misses training today with a thigh strain. His fitness will be assessed on Friday and if the thigh is still a problem he will miss what would otherwise have been his 123rd consecutive appearance for Town. It would be the first game Holland would have missed since his transfer from Bournemouth at the beginning of the 97/98 season. Jim Magilton would almost certainly start in his place. |
Alright Jack? Wed 15th Sep 1999 14:45 Reports today suggest that Town could be about to make £500,000 offer for Grimsby striker or midfield man Jack Lester. 23-year-old Lester, who either plays as an out an out striker or as an attacking midfielder, will be out of contract with the Mariners at the end fo the season and is refusing to sign an extension. Grimsby will want to get a fee of some sort for their starman and so may well be willing to part with the player at a reduced fee. However, Town may be up against several other clubs for his signature. Premiership sides Southampton and Wimbledon are both rumoured to be interested and Wolves expressed an interest just last week. Lester has scored four goals already this season adn has set up several more. |
Crewe Cut Unbeaten Run Wed 15th Sep 1999 11:54 Town fell to their first defeat of the season last night when they fell 2-1 to Crewe Alexandra. However, it was in the Worthington Cup and Town appeared to have little appetite for the hugely devalued competition on the night. Town actually took the lead through a rasping Mark Venus free-kick on 30 minutes. This came as a surprise as Crewe had been the more industrious side up to this point. |
