Ten-man Town fell to a harsh 3-1 Boxing Day defeat at Crystal Palace. Jaime Peters put the Blues in front and Town were well on top until Jose Fonte’s equaliser was followed by referee Paul Taylor showing Jon Stead a hugely controversial red card just before the break. In the second half the numerical difference told and Palace netted through Neil Danns and Victor Moses.

Hartlepool director of sport Chris Turner has confirmed his club’s interest in taking Town midfielder Colin Healy on loan in January. Healy was all set to join Pools from Cork City in the summer until Town matched their £70,000 bid and brought the former Republic of Ireland international to Portman Road.

Town will be without skipper Jon Walters, midfielder Grant Leadbitter and striker Stern John when they travel to Crystal Palace on Boxing Day (KO 1pm). Walters and Leadbitter serve one-match bans after reaching five yellow cards, while John is ineligible to play against his parent club.

Manager Roy Keane says defender Tommy Smith’s decision to switch international allegiance to New Zealand will have no effect on his Town career. Yesterday, New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert revealed that former England U17 international Smith had been in contact with him to commit to playing for the nation where he was brought up ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.
