Smith Switches to New Zealand and is Off to the World Cup Tue 22nd Dec 2009 15:20
New Zealand head coach Ricki Herbert has revealed that Town defender Tommy Smith has emailed him to accept the offer of a place in his squad for next summer’s World Cup. Smith, who has previously represented England at U17 level, qualifies for New Zealand having lived there between the ages of eight and 16.

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says that Town would welcome sponsorship of the South Stand and also of Portman Road as a whole. Brewers Greene King ended their long association with the stand formerly known as Churchman’s in the summer.

Town have invited Trinidadian midfielder Kerry Baptiste to spend a week on trial at Playford Road. Baptiste currently plays for Joe Public in his home country, the club owned by FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, with whom he has won five domestic titles.

TWTD understands that former Austrian U21 international keeper Michael Langer spent some of last week on trial at Playford Road. The 24-year-old SC Freiburg keeper, who was on trial at Manchester United last month, was expected to stay for the full week but was recalled early to sit on the bench during his club’s 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
