Boss Jim Magilton called for his players to make a good start to their season opener at home to Sheffield Wednesday and they gave him exactly that. The Blues won a penalty in the 35th second of the match and never looked back as they went on to a comfortable 4-1 win.

Town romped to a 4-1 opening day victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road. The Blues went ahead through a Alan Lee's early penalty, then Gary Roberts lashed home a stunning volley, before Lee made it three at the break. Couñago added the fourth prior to Leon Clarke pulled one back.

Striker Billy Clarke has been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for a friendly in Germany on Tuesday, 21st August. Defender Chris Casement has also received a call, into the Northern Ireland U21s for a game with Finland at Ballymena the same evening.

Released academy striker Kieron Leabon has joined Blue Square North club Boston United. Leabon has been on trial with the Lincolnshire club, which was relegated from League Two at the end of last season and then demoted down a further division after breaking rules relating to their administration.

Town's U15s beat Leeds United 1-0 this evening to reach the quarter-finals of the Galway Cup. The Blues youngsters will play Aberdeen on Friday morning.

Town's U15s have started their Galway Cup campaign with back-to-back draws. The tournament, in which the Blues competed for the first time last season, is being held at west of Ireland club Salthill Devon's Drom ground.
