Reports indicate that Newcastle United paid £2.5 million for Darren Ambrose. The Magpies have long been interested in the midfielder and previously offered £3 million first for Ambrose, Darren Bent and Matt Bloomfield and then for just the two Darrens.

Cash-strapped Town have agreed fees for Hermann Hreidarsson and Darren Ambrose. The Icelander is travelling to Portsmouth for talks over the weekend while Ambrose is to discuss a move to Newcastle United.

The FA Premier League says it would have to approve any move for a Town player made under the 'club in distress' rule. Premiership sides can attempt to sign a Town player and play him this season due to the club being in administration.

Town skipper Matt Holland says he is aware of no serious interest in him from any Premiership club. The Town skipper has recently been watched by Charlton amongst others but Holland says that ideally he will help Town back to the Premiership ahead of next season.
