It has been confirmed that French loanee Patrice Maurel has joined the club on loan until the end of the season.

Reports this morning suggesting once more that Richard Wright will be on his way to Chelsea are being denied by Town. A Portman Road spokesperson said "Don't believe everything you read in the papers". The story, which appeared in several places, suggested that Chelsea and Ipswich had completed the deal which would see Wright move to Chelsea for £5 million at the end of the season. It has also been suggested that this deal is what paid for Marcus Stewart last week, with little mention of the £6 million gleaned from the sale of Kieron Dyer.
Bassett Denies Stewart Slagging Mon 07th Feb 2000 16:06
Barnsley manager Dave Bassett has denied making the derogatory comments about Marcus Stewart that were widely reported late last week and at the weekend. The former Sheffield United manager said that he had actually tried to sign Stewart from Bristol Rovers when he was the boss at Bramall Lane and that he would have readily have spent £2.5 million on Town's new striker had he the cash to do so.
Magilton Awaits Call Up Confirmation Mon 07th Feb 2000 14:59
Jim Magilton is today awaiting confirmation of his call up for the Northern Ireland squad playing Luxembourg on February 23rd. The away match would be Magilton's first international for two years after a fall out with former boss Lawrie McMenemy. Mew manager Sammy McIlroy has already said that Magilton is in his plans and was due to watch him at Bolton earlier in the season. However the Town midfielder missed that game, but despite he is expected to be in the squad due for announcement later in the week.

Town extended their unbeaten run to fifteen games with a comfortable 2-0 win over promotion rivals Barnsley at Oakwell. Town lined up with Jim Magilton back after injury and with Wayne Brown replacing the injured Mark Venus.

Town leapfrog Yorkshire rivals to go third with recent signing Marcus Stewart scoring our second. The goal came on the back of a Scowcroft goal both coming on the hour. Both Manchester City and Charlton scored 3-1 away victories.

Town skipper yesterday signed the deal which will tie him to Portman Road until 2004. The deal had been offered to him before Christmas and talks had progressed smoothly. Matt said: "It's taken a little while to tie up the loose ends but I was always confident we'd reach agreement. I am ambitious to play in the Premiership and I feel this could be our year. The club has the ambition to buy Marcus Stewart, but that made no difference to my decision. Everyone knows how much I enjoy playing for Ipswich Town." What a man!

Town are dismissing widespread reports this morning that Spurs are to make a bid of £5-£6 million for David Johnson. It is believed that Spurs have also ruled out the link.

The Town side which lost to Bristol City this afternoon included neither Patrice Maurel or Adam Tanner. Town man of the match was Kevin Inglis with Neil Midgley also looking good. Town had a few chances but the whole team, and especially Richard Logan, were profligate. Town's nearest opportunity came when Neil Midgley hit the post.

Town reserves this afternoon suffered their first defeat of the season losing 2-0 at home to Bristol City. Town were down 1-0 at half-time and never recovered. More later.
