Town lost their first game of 2004/05 3-2 at George Burley's Derby County despite being 2-1 up at the break. A penalty from Tommy Miller and a second from Dean Bowditch a minute later had put the Blues in front but goals from Marco Reich (2) and Inigo Idiakez won the game for the Rams.

Town got their 2004/05 away campaign started with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest. The Blues rode their luck on several occasions - the woodwork was hit three times - but in the end Darren Bent's leveller was enough, Paul Evans having put the home side ahead.

Town continued their improved pre-season form with a 2-1 win over newly promoted Premiership side Crystal Palace. The Blues went ahead in the fourth minute through Drissa Diallo before Shaun Derry put the visitors back on terms. Dean Bowditch netted the winner just before half time.

Yet another dismal home performance saw the Blues to a 3-1 defeat against upwardly mobile Wigan Athletic. Goals from Jason Roberts, Nathan Ellington and Gary Teale put the Latics three-up before Shefki Kuqi netted a consolation for Town.

Town manager Joe Royle has included Jim Magilton in his squad despite the midfielder having missed training this week with a groin problem. Tommy Miller also missed training today but is still likely to be OK for the visit to Fratton Park on Saturday.

Town look likely to rest a number of players when they meet Arsenal in the Worhtington Cup tomorrow. Mark Venus, James Scowcroft, Richard Naylor and Jim Magilton all missed training yesterday feeling the effects of Saturday's game with Middlesbrough. None seems to be in the 'injured' category exactly, however, George Burley has said he will not risk player in this competition. That means that Martijn Reuser, Titus Bramble and David Johnson and may all get starts against an Arsenal side likely to look very similar to the reserve side which beat the Town second string 3-0 two weeks ago.
