Just about all of the 2023/24 team would’ve all been thrilled to be playing in the Championship that season. It was the level they would’ve aspired to playing at, and that they had just been promoted into. Only Tuanzebe could realistically have thought himself a PL player then. And he needed a place to rebuild his career.
So the stage was set. Determined players, who already knew exactly how the manager wanted them to play. Add in a bit of early season luck, lots of momentum, relatively few injuries and we became an unstoppable force.
This season. How many of the players that we’ve bought in the last 15 months are thrilled to be playing in the Championship? Not many. They see it as a stepping stone. They believe that they should be playing in the PL.
And those that played in the Championship team last time round certainly wouldn’t feel that they should be only squad players now.
So, better players, yes. On paper.

With so many of that team now gone, I am just remembering again how wonderful those two seasons were. What excitement, what passion, what pleasure!
Thank you to all those players. I hope they meet up in years to come and remember it all, time and again. And always end their evenings by tipping a bucket of ice all over Chappers!
And I hope they have all benefited massively from those times: with big, fat contracts at their new clubs... plus of course the thrill of playing in the PL league last year, which most of them would never have dreamed possible.

I find it all rather bemusing to be honest. So many players, so much change, different options depending on the opposition, needing at least two players for each position, having 10 players for the 4 attacking roles, players having to be happy to get “minutes” etc etc.
It must be a nightmare to manage.
When I was a player I’d want to play. Every game. All game. Every week. Whoever the opposition was.

Even if he was a PL back-up, he should be good enough to be a Championship starter.
£20m spent on him and Muric. Both will now be loaned out. Ouch. |

Why does one particular player ‘need to play’, whilst for lots of others it’s fine for them to sit on the bench or be 3rd or 4th choice for a position? |
