We would be mad as an automatically competing side to go in with Baggott as our 4th choice CB. If you forget that he's an academy player for the minute. If we signed a CB from L1 Blackpool who featured in just 22 L1 games least season, would you think that is good business by the club? He has to have a full season under his belt before we even contemplate it IMO. |

It's a great point and I think those prices are probably a fair bit undercooked (bar Broady given thats reported). Ali - Good comparison is Josh Coburn who is the same age as Ali and featured in just 23 Champ games last season (scoring 5 goals) and just went for 5M+ to Millwall. Woolfy - Good comparison is Mark McGuinness who is only two years younger than Wolfy and went for 10M + add ons last year. Wolfy has gone on to not only play in the PL but be more than good enough as well as start the majority of games for n automatically promoted side. Taylor - We paid 1.5M for him! He's now a Republic of Ireland international who featured in 32 PL games last season. Good comparison is Lewis O'brien who just went to Wrexham for 5M+. He's the same age as Taylor, played 16 Champ games last season, 25 for Boro the season before and featured in 13 PL games for Forest the season before. Johnson - No great comparison from this summer but with 4 years left on his deal and the fact he would only be moving to the PL, surely it's more than 5M? [Post edited 31 Jul 11:29]

He's been heavily linked with PL clubs post U21s Euros and he started 31 Ligue 1 games last season. If Woolfy does go, It's going to very difficult to buy someone for the RCB role, who is happy to compete for minutes with the captain of the club unless it is obviously a huge step up. |

On the squad planning I think it's just a series of unfortunate (or very fortunate events) that have led us to needing the rebuild. Morsy and Luongo were just continually brilliant. There was no real need to recruit into those roles and even when we did with Jack Taylor, Mass kept his role. No doubt we missed out on a few targets last season though. One the face of it, Phillips and Cajuste were very capable but I'm sure KM did not forsee us only using the loan market to strengthen that position. If Hackney does end up here, It would certainly be an exciting new pivot! I'm sure we will be in the market for someone to compete with Azor as well. |

Exactly .. If Hackney is the choice then we have a pretty young group in that midfield. Barbrook (20) Humphreys (21) Hackney (23) Taylor (27) Matusiwa (27) Need someone that has that bit of clever game management about them IMO, wether that comes from the PL or not. Could see a young PL midfielder coming in as the 5th CM provided they don't count towards the squad limit. |

It's a catch 22. When we got promoted to the PL we had to improve the squad. We did that with Jack Clarke, Jaden Philogene and Dara O'Shea. That's 55 odd million quid just on those three. KM and the club are under pressure to make them work and generate further value for the club. Playing those two over the three new boys would have made little to no sense but in fairness to KM he gave both of them a decent run out at times last year. I too hope he does not go and I'd love to see him start games this season. However, we always had to recruit hard and those players were always going to come in over the top of Woolfy and Broady. |

I don't think there are too many clubs you come into in August and walk into a side as the immediate starter so I wouldn't see that as a real worry. You only have to look at Delap as the evidence of winning a job and keeping it. That's the selling point for any striker coming through the door. |

I'm just not sure keeping Humphreys around as a 5th CM who takes up a squad slot is worth it. We would be better off keeping Finn Barbrook around as at least he does not count. Equally, off the back of last nights game I wasn't totally convinced Humphreys is really ready to play 6 at the level that others have done over the past 3 years. We don't need versatility IMO, we need 2 brilliant players for each position. |
 | Forum Thread | Hackney Waiting .... at 12:11 30 Jul 2025
I totally understand him wanting to be a PL player and I equally understand the pull of playing for your boyhood team. However I can't quite work out what he is waiting for? The market has been open for two months, we have had a bid accepted and still no PL offers forthcoming? Surely as soon as that bid is in (been public knowledge for at least a week re an official bid/ approach) your agent would be out to every interested PL club with what is essentially an ultimatum. Yet still nothing .... Hopefully nothing is forthcoming and KMc can sell him the dream! Would be some addition. |

It just does not really exist anymore and its amplified when you are a bottom end PL/ top end Champ club. The likes of Chambers for example would have never stayed had we been in this situation. Our long stint in the Champ was the sole reason for it. |

I agree, probably needs to be another young player and likely from an international market who would be happy to be in a development role. I also think one of these ST has to have a real physical profile ala Kieffer Moore. He was so effective on loan and equally last year for Sheffeild United, just had a knack of bringing technical players into it and scoring good goals. I'm not suggesting Oli Mcburnie but someone in that mould. |

A midfield partnership of a 21YO and 20YO is two very young players. Omari is also pretty young, he's just achieved a huge amount! |

It's always sad losing good players, particularly those who have scored emotional goals but if that 7M figure is true, it's very good business. If it also means we are keeping Omari then even better news. I will miss him if he goes and I'm sure he will be great for Wrexham but we were never going to keep all them in the Championship. It would have been negligent from the club to allow Broady to go for free next year whilst also not giving minutes to two players we paid 20M for. [Post edited 29 Jul 22:56]

I think for two very young players they did ok. That certainly wasn't a full strength Charlton team though and I'm not sure they really grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. Barbrook looks like he could be a real player, definitely needs a L1 loan though to continue to physically mature. Cam had a few nice touches, particularly when breaking through their press. I wouldn't have him ahead of Taylor yet and as a result I think he needs another loan. He's got to be playing now, zero point in him being third choice behind a new signing and Taylor. |

I wasn't convinced. Worked hard, put himself about and had a few nice touches, took his goal well but a few poor touches, spurned a couple of chances and didn't link the team particularly well. We have to be happy with him starting games for Ipswich Town, 3rd choice or not and at present, I'm not sure he's quite got enough to impact games in the way we need our striker to do so. Personally I think a loan to a top 2 League 1 team would do him the world of good. |
 | Forum Thread | Kalvin Phillips - Not even a transfer whisper to anyone .... at 13:27 29 Jul 2025
By all accounts, he did not have a brilliant season last year, however I am surprised that we have reached the start of August and I have not seen him linked with anyone. I guess he could be holding out for some kind of comp based release? Or maybe he's just not good enough for the PL, too expensive for anyone else? This is not me suggesting he should be back here. We need battle hardened reinforcements that can play their part in 50+ games this year and hopefully add value next year. |

I wouldn't understand this one at all, possibly an enquiry we made before Kipre? Older than Woolfy, played less than 50% of games last season and wouldn't really have any resale value. |
