Ben Godfrey reported by Fabrizio on Twitter

Pace is clearly high on our wishlist of incoming players, as evidenced by O’Shea and Ogbene who were both among the fastest players in their positions last season. Godfrey was considered the fastest player at Everton a couple of years ago.

Timing of goals
at 21:40 21 Dec 2024

47% of the goals we have conceded have come within the first 5 minutes of a half, or the last 5 minutes of a half (plus extra time). We were always going to concede this season, but it’s the timing of a lot of these goals that is really killing us. Of course it doesn’t work this way, but if all of our matches had been played between minutes 5-40 and 50-85, we would currently have 4 wins, 7 draws and 5 losses and be 7 points better off.

The result of a match is so often dictated by the flow of the game and we are giving momentum and confidence to opposition teams at the worse possible times. If we can just manage those 5 minutes at each end of the half a little bit better, it could go a long way.

15 goals conceded:
0-5 minutes - Southampton, West Ham, Man Utd, Newcastle
40-45+ minutes - Brentford x2, West Ham
45-50 minutes - Forest, West Ham, Newcastle, Brentford (Technically 51 but penalty was conceded a few minutes earlier)
85+ minutes – Leicester, Bournemouth x2, Brentford

Agreed. Good performance and we will only improve from here.

at 14:41 27 Aug 2024

As it stands Hutchinson and Chaplin are the two players for that R10 position. Not sure we have anyone else who really specialises there. Broadhead and Harry Clarke technically have more competitions for places than Chaplin does (Szmodics and J Clarke for L10, Johnson and Tuanzebe for RB).

"That’s 24 senior players, so means room for 1 of Ali, Taylor, Harness and Fridge would remain as well"

Seems like their fate hinges on whether the Broja deal gets done or not. If we sign Broja, and he and Hirst are still out for a number of games, then surely it is advantage Ali as we will need him as backup for Delap in the interim.

If we move on from Broja and sign someone who is ready to play from the off, that would presumably release Ali for loan and would mean one of Taylor or Harness keep their place.

Sammie Szmodics is here!

Crazy to think we now have three of last year’s championship team of the season (Szmodics, Davis, Greaves), including the top goalscorer and the top assister!

West Brom Fans Didn't Rate Townsend
at 15:46 1 Aug 2024

Us and West Brom play different styles of football. West Brom are more defence-minded whereas we are more direct-attacking. Who is to say that our style of play won’t suit him better, regardless of what their fans’ opinions of him are? If Leif played for West Brom I suspect he wouldn’t have got as many assists as he has done with us and his fans probably wouldn’t rate him as highly as what we do. Kieran obviously thinks Townsend has the attributes to fit in with our system and do a job when Leif is not in the team.

£750k for Conor Townsend...
at 13:49 31 Jul 2024

Pretty good price for a player that was regular in a team that conceded less goals than we did last season. Only three other left-backs had more assists than him too, despite West Brom’s defensive style of play.

Baggott at LB
at 08:40 22 Jul 2024

In the post-Shakhter interview Morsy goes out of his way to say how LB might be a new position for Baggott and how well he has done working into it. I had assumed Baggott played there more through necessity as Humphreys and Clarke were unavailable, but I found Morsy’s praise quite telling. It sounds like they have been working with him at LB in training, perhaps in similar vein to how Tuanzebe was used at RB.

I imagine we are looking to get someone in as cover for Leif, and given that Humphreys, Clarke, Johnson and Greaves can all play LB if needed, I find it interesting that we are now working on Baggott in that position as well. I think most of us predict Baggott to go out on loan this season, but it would be a little odd for us to start working on a positional change for him now if we are going to loan him out in a few weeks’ time, when any interested loan club would surely be looking to use him as a CB.

Will be interesting to see if he gets any more minutes at LB during the rest of preseason.

Media Speculation

So you could say that, in a strange twist of events, we should all be happy his agent was drumming up interest from the bigger clubs as that ultimately delayed things enough for KM to change his mind from Brighton to us

Steve Watson has spoken…. Kind of
at 16:58 24 May 2024

A great article and helpful to see the timeline laid out like that.

“Is Maresca really Chelsea's main target, or has that information been put out to force a decision from McKenna?”

That makes it sound like Chelsea have officially offered McKenna the job? Maresca suddenly being their main target does appear a little odd, and I can’t imagine many would choose him over McKenna given the opportunity.

BBC saying McKenna and Pert want to move on
at 16:00 22 May 2024

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c3ggpj1j4y7o

Talks with Ipswich are likely to take place this week and the Tractor Boys are expected to offer McKenna a new deal to convince him to stay at Portman Road.

BBC Sport understands that is expected to fail with the manager, and assistant Martyn Pert, feeling the time is right to move.

Morsy. PFA fans player of the year.
at 14:46 22 May 2024

What a pleasant surprise! Reading other team's forums throughout the year you would have thought that all anyone saw were his yellow cards and nothing else. Fantastic that people outside of our club have recognized how important he truly is, and how brilliant a season he has had.

So…
at 10:55 7 May 2024

The way to look at is not about how many will we bring in but how many do we need to replace. We have 8 players who will almost certainly not be here next season (Aluko, Ladapo, Ball, Williams, Travis, Jackson, Donacian, Moore). So there will surely be 7 or 8 incoming at minimum, with possibly more depending on what happens with Hutch, Sarmiento, Walton, Harness, Humphries.

Dropping Woolfenden a huge and brilliant call (n/t)
at 15:18 1 May 2024

Not only was it tactically brilliant, but it just again demonstrates how amazing McKenna’s man management skills are. I loved his post-match comment on it:

“It’s important that I’m consistent with the players if I’m saying I trust them all and we have to stick to what we’ve done and what we’ve done well. It’s important that we do that even at the end of busy seasons and I trust everyone in that dressing room to contribute, and I knew George would come in tonight and do a good job, and he certainly did that.”

In footballing terms £105m isn't huge.
at 09:45 23 Mar 2024

Also worth noting that it is ‘up to’ £105m, with ‘up to’ being the key part there. So a chunk of that money seems contingent on other factors, like say promotion, and so as it stands they have invested less for that 40%.

McKenna just now interviewed on Town TV
at 17:36 2 Mar 2024

I'm glad McKenna singled him out a bit because I thought he was excellent and a big reason that we saw that game out as comfortably as we did. He must be disappointed not to be playing more and yet he is still giving 100% when he comes on, even when it's just to help us retain the ball.

Who got the captain's armband when Morsy came off?

Missed who took it when Morsy was subbed, and just wondered if it gave a hint as to who might be captain when he is eventually suspended.

Hutchison, Taylor, Ball and Axel to start…
at 09:27 1 Nov 2023

I actually like the idea of a Tuanzebe-Baggott central pairing, but that seems unlikely and I suspect it will be Burgess in there.

Looking forward to seeing how Taylor and Walton perform tonight in particular. Will be good to see JD back as well.
