This place is fooking awful at the moment

I agree.

The algorithms these companies use usually work out for themselves what keeps people on the site, and what keeps them clicking. You'd think that what would keep you logging on would be funny videos, jokes, nice stories etc. But the thing that really works in rage and anger. If you get angry with the world you are more likely to stay online and consume content.

So that's what these social media companies feed you. They make you angry, supply you with ever more partisan and extreme content and never never show you anything from a different viewpoint just to make you think.

This is changing the world, but the SM companies don't care (Nick Clegg gave an absolutely pitiful defence of this recently), and governments either don't understand, or can't/won't address this.

I think this goes a long way to driving the polarisation in society, and the lack of empathy with people with different views.

The exception is where a social media company has an explicitly partisan feed by design, such as X, where Musk directs his staff to promote more RW content.

Something similar (I'm - ahem - told) is happening in the world of pr0n, where people are gravitating faster and faster to more explicit and extreme content. This has more hidden effects, but they are becoming clearer now.

You do pay income tax on passive incomes though. And taxing assets is completely unworkable.

There isn't just a way of raising substantial amounts of money without basically everyone paying more. "Somebody else should pay" doesn't work.

Jeremy Hunt gets a moderately good press because he cleared up some of the mess after Liz Truss and Kwarteng had their go ... but he salted the earth when he left. He reduced NI by 4p, and there was just no way to pay for it. He couldn't afford it, and Labour weren't bold enough to say they'd reverse it. (perhaps sensibly. They'd have been hammered day after day during the campaign by the press). So they increased employers NI to compensate, but that has effects of its own, and was really only getting the finances back to where they were prior to the election. It hasn't raised enough to touch the sides when it comes to the areas of the country that really need financing.

"What was done to Corbyn was a disgrace ..."

You mean the country deciding on two occasions they didn't want him as PM?

I agree. There was a good reason why he failed to win either of the leadership elections he stood in.

[Edit - Hmm. This was supposed to be a reply to Glasgow's post commenting that if Burnham had stayed an MP people would be thinking a lot less of him)

McKenna reported to be in boardroom at West Ham yesterday
at 12:10 15 Sep 2025

Doesn’t ring true to me. He might well have been there, but would you be so open about it, if anyone thought any move was imminent?

Sounds more to me like all sides are keeping channels of communication open/networking.

Plus as Joe says, it doesn’t seem like the right time for any of the parties

Freddie Ladapo joined Mutual Consent FC from Hudds a few days ago….
at 11:05 15 Sep 2025

I saw on social media that a player who was at a Nonleague side I watch for a season or two had recently lost his young wife to cancer, and had started a fundraiser to pay for her funeral.

Freddie had given a reasonably significant sum to it. I assume the two players knew each other.

(possibly this is related to his contract when we were in the PL. Nevertheless I smiled, and wish him well)

We are so fortunate that Davis when faced with the opportunity to go back to the PL decided that it didn’t go great for him last time, he wants to get his mojo back, and McKenna is the chap to help him, with that. Rather than pushing for a move that he’d have got.

I assume it will be Akpom. Whilst he can clearly play as a 10, he’d be much more comfortable up front than Hutch or Chaplin. And probably SS too, although I’m less confident in that prediction.

His signing seemed to underwhelm the fan base at the time … especially as we were all fearing we might not sign a striker. But he’s started very well, and fits the way McKenna likes to play.

It was noticeable how asymmetric our side was yesterday.

Davis and Furling have very different profiles.
As do Philogene and McAteer.

I assume McKenna will keep with the same back four for a while now. It will be fascinating to see if he wants a more balanced attacking unit in the medium term.

I haven’t seen that much of him, but was quite impressed by him in one of the pre-season games.

I can’t remember which one. Away in Europe. France maybe? Streamed.

Anyway, glad he’s showing it now. Long may it continue.

I agree with this. Early days and all that, but that half wasn’t what we were looking for. It may come though.

I disagree.

I think they are looking better at it as the half is going on, and you can see the thinking.

Every goal kick is worked to O’Shea and Furlong who switch it to the left. They are trying hard to expose Philogene and Davis against the two on their side, and I think it is smart. They are our main attacking threat

Blast. I’m seriously regretting not setting this up myself now.

My problem is I’m not a bullsh**-salesman type. But I did (genuinely) have this idea at least a decade ago.

I’ve long thought this kind of product is one missing from football. Indeed I briefly considered setting up a company like this.

If you are reasonably wealthy, and want to buy someone a classy present from a football club, what can you get them? The answer is very little. Just the usual selection of mugs, hats scarves with club names on.

But nothing special. Nothing they’d frame, put on the wall and treasure.

My other business idea was a fitness club for pros without contracts who have to train by themselves to maintain fitness. I think these things are going on now.
