Young can play left back. Suspect this means Johnson/Furlong as RB and Davis/Young at LB. |

We sold or released all our scrappers, fighters and winners and bought a load of floaty ineffective wimps. The number of 50/50s Philogene and Clarke duck out of is insane. Burns never did that. When we were playing badly or losing, you could count on one of Morsy, Chaplin or Broadhead to pull something out of the bag; score a goal with a bit of magic or a deflected long shot. None of the new players have that will to win. [Post edited 24 Aug 18:25]

 | Forum Reply | Does this signing mean Akpom is seen as No9? at 15:55 22 Aug 2025
Isn't Egeli seen as someone who will eventually be a striker. Big physical presence etc... Similar to Delap, who played on the wing for Hull. Perhaps we are buying him as a striker. |
 | Forum Reply | Is Wes ok? at 09:42 22 Aug 2025
Wes has been one of our bets players over the past 4 seasons. A crucial part of both promotions. That said, he was probably at the limit of his ability in our Championship promotion season. Factor in his injury, being two years older and our higher aspirations. I don't see him getting much (if any) game time this season. I suspect he would have been sold/released if he wasn't injured. |
 | Forum Reply | Hypothetically, where does each team finish… at 07:46 15 Aug 2025
Current: 4th. Lots of good players, but no coherent strategy or style. Will start poorly but finish the season strongly. Leavers: 6th. Solid championship team. Delap single handedly scores enough goals to sneak us into the playoffs, similar to our sixth finish under McCarthy. Championship: 10th. Without the momentum and luck of our promotion season, the players revert to their true level. No danger of relegation and a hope of the playoffs until the very end. |

I would guess one or two of those will be young loanees from the Prem in the last week of the transfer window. |
 | Forum Reply | Clarke, Taylor and Johnson disappointed again for me at 05:36 9 Aug 2025
Agree re: Clarke, Taylor and Johnson. Can't see any of them being fixtures in the team. I also don't see what Sammie Szmodics brings. Chaplin offers more in that role. There were positives. Young looked class when he came on. I'm not Al-Hamadi's greatest fan, but I thought he also put himself about well and showed a hunger sorely missing in Clarke. |

You've made some good points, and I agree there are nuances to it. What I have seen across several businesses that I am familiar with is a pause on recruitment. A lot of companies seem to be waiting to see what happens with AI before making any major commitments. A potential positive (in this country, at least) is that the work AI's are better at is the simpler work which companies have been outsourcing to places like India. AI's need senior people to train them and handle the more complex bespoke work. Those skillsets are more prevailant in developed countries. Perhaps AI will lead to more people hiring in Britain again. |

I'd argue 3, 4 and 5 are all essentially the same as option 1. Its not about getting rid of everyone. In option 2, there are still people there to wrangle the AI. There are just fewer of them. Companies are not going to lay off their entire workforce. But if every company laid off even 20% of their workforces, it would be a disaster. |

My team writes code. Using AI to help, we can write that code between 4 and 10 times faster. What used to take us a week now takes us a day. My company has two choices: 1) Yay, a team of the same size can now do 4 times as much work. 2) Yay, we only need a team a quarter of the size to do the same work. Which do you think they will pick? Now extrapolate out across the whole knowledge economy. |

Didn't Jimmy Juan come on an 18 month loan or something like that? |
 | Forum Reply | Morsy at 10:42 15 Jul 2025
We can't be sentimental about it. Morsy has been a fantastic player for us. Probably the single most important player in our two promotions. A great leader and some great moments. But he is past his prime. And he showed he wasn't quite good enough for the premier league last season. Let's move on. Give him a warm welcome if he plays against us next season. And consider him a club legend once he retires. |

Legalising cannabis would seem to be an obvious money-maker. Can't leave the house without smelling weed everywhere you go, so its clearly widely-used. Government may as well get a cut of that. |

Our youth development has been exceptionally poor for decades, long predating the category 1/2 conversation. The only premier league-quality player we have produced this millennium is Darren Bent. [Post edited 3 Jul 15:35]

 | Forum Thread | What has happened to Essex in the cricket this year? at 07:20 21 Jun 2025
Struggling in the County Championship. Getting thrashed every game in the T20 Blast. Their team is not hugely dissimilar from the one that has been very successful in recent years. Elgar has replaced A Cook. One international-standard opener for another. Cox has replaced Lawrence. One batter on the fringes of the England team for another. But the core of Harmer, Cook, Porter and co. is still there. Too many youngsters? Allison, Das, Benkenstein and Thain have potential, but can Essex carry 2-3 of them in every match? Senior players not performing? Rossington signed a white-ball only contract, only to be dropped from the Blast because of his poor form. Best players missing? Cox and Cook being on the fringes of the England team means Essex have been without their best batter and bowler. Annoying, because neither have actually played for the England first XI, other than Cook against Zimbabwe. |
