Just recalled from Lincoln by Forest, probably as a backup to Grabban but have signed a striker from Strasbourg and just made a loan bid for Dwight Gayle. Surely Forest now looking to loan him back out? We’ve got to be looking to bring him on loan if Forest allow a move, already scored 16 goals this season

Lamberts system dilemma

442
Feel the 442 needs to be used against the smaller, worse teams where they make mistakes and can be countered easily which is why we’ve had such a good start but when playing the top teams in this league that are good on the ball a switch is needed as we cannot simply rely on opposition mistakes anymore and need be able to get a foot in the game which we weren’t able to in the first half.
Despite its poor showing yesterday it still is a formation we have been using effectively, our pressing has been very good with our front 4 lining up against the oppositions other three defensive strikers and generally Norwood dropping onto their CDM meaning their only option is long ball which we win and regain the ball but this needs a high concentration level to be able to keep going for the whole 90 mins doing so. Another effective way we are using the 442 is our fantastic counter attacking so far, we have been able to get the ball from the midfield or defence through the thirds and into our two strikers who have benefited largely of this and create opportunities with quick incisive balls, we are top of the league for goals from counter attacks, shots per game from counter attacks and chances created from counter attacks. In terms of the personnel it suits us well making use of two of Keane, Jackson and Norwood, using our strength out wide and our two centre midfielders who have been excellent and have a really good balance. But in order to use it effectively we can’t have Judge playing, he exploits the full backs, crowds the middle but this is due to him wanting to be on the ball a lot of the time and has to come inside for it. Even when out wide I still feel he is our biggest creator and is shown with his ball to Norwood and his 4 key passes in the game yesterday.
41212
Would like to see a diamond which suits us the most, gets Judge in his most influential position, gets 2 of Jackson/Keane/Norwood on and utilises our attacking strength while also using our centre midfielders more effectively with Downes having more freedom to attack, Huws or Nolan as the other CM which gives us a late arriving midfielder who can finish and adds to our creativity, Skuse can sit behind and just rotate the ball between the cbs and himself and with his and Woolfendens passing ability they can dart passes through the thirds and into the advanced players.
Could prove to be a very effective formation and many teams in the division are now using it effectively: Gillingham and Peterborough.
Countering can still be used effectively in this formation with the 2 upfront, Jackson and Norwood, who both like to get in behind and pull wide at times which gives us width and stretches the centre backs from the initial attacking phase which can create space for Judge in the centre and allow him to do his thing.
There will be more space on the wings for KVY now to attack into with the oppo potentially being brought inside due to our numbers in the middle meaning we can advance the ball further forward due to his excellent ball progressing ability.
The problem with this option is the left back area and potentially being exposed there with at times maybe a 2 on 1 if the cm doesn’t cover which can be extremely tiring, luckily we have a lot of options in centre midfield who can keep switching throughout the season when one becomes tired, and we are always vulnerable to a quick switch from the opposition to the other side of the pitch which also exploits us so we will need a lot of discipline in order to play this effectively and we have seen signs of it already last season when imo we played at our best in that short period.
352
Similar to the diamond and perhaps could be used but not comfortable with Nsiala and Chambers in the three centre back roles would have to only be one and Kenlock play instead as a cb which leaves a hole at lwb where we have Georgiou and Garbutt but whether we can trust them enough on their own In 1v1s defensively we have not seen.
We also lose a midfield player for a cb when switching to the 352 from a 442 which considering we have only conceded 4 goals so far isn’t particularly needed.
Also we then have a lack of width which is supplied by the wing backs and when they’re pegged back we are somewhat one dimensional.
4231
Another formation with promise yet another that can have its negatives also with our squad.
We can fit in Judge in the no. 10 role in the central areas where he can be such a threat to other teams and Skuse and Downes behind him can somewhat ease his defensive duties and they have a nice balance to them as a trio. Outwide at the moment is a worry with this formation with only Garbutt really showing a goalscoring ability which is worrying as with only one striker we need goals from our midfield and Judge not really being a goal scorer and neither Rowe or Georgiou we lack this. Edwards had an impressive goal scoring record for us last year but considering his poor performances so far he may not be up to it.
With this formation the fact we can only use 1 striker considering our strength there isn’t ideal and with Norwood missing a lot of chances so far (7 big chances missed) will he be able to be our consistent scorer that we need in this formation, Jackson doesn’t suit a 1 upfront and Keane hasn’t got the greatest scoring records but his build up play is second to none and Jackson’s threat in behind is also fantastic to have.

Garbutt at LB
at 16:55 12 Sep 2019

Classed as one of the worst LB’s some fans have seen for Oxford in a relegation threatening side when he played there last year, so why the obsession of playing him there for us when Kenlock a much better defender gets targeted by the opposition even in League One. Also the amount of people assuming he should play as our wing back in 352 despite this being an even harder position to play compared to lb in a 442, he will only get more and more exposed comparer point on the 352 we are not suited to it one bit. You need two athletic centre backs as your outside centre backs and even with Kenlock and Woolfenden there against Tottenham u23 and suiting them we still got exposed! Remember the Reading game where chambers got exploited throughout that whole first half and even with toto and Woolf on the outside it still won’t suit us with Toto’s clumsiness at times. If it’s not broke don’t fix it!
