Paul Cooper made 433 league appearances in the top flight. That to me is an incredible statistic for a player to make and not get a call up. And considering the European experience appearances he had for the club makes it more incredible for me.
After Ron Greenwood left the England job in 1982, Terry Bucther asked him privately if Cooper was ever in his thoughts to receive a call up. Greenwood said he did but felt Corrigan just pipped him as third best keeper
TBH Cooper was unlucky to have so many good keepers around at the time. Apart from Shilton, Clemence, Corrigan you also had Parkes (1 cap), Rimmer (1 cap) & Bailey (who somehow got two full caps)
My memories from that night regarding Burley's last game was the players looked shattered, not helped by playing three away games in five days.
We played in Yugoslavia on a Thursday night (won 1-0), played Wimbledon on the Sunday (won 1-0) Then two days later we played away to Grimsby where we were very fortunate to just lose 3-0.
Have to admit slightly concerned four games in & Hirst has not had a shot on target in open play.
Some will say he has not been giving the service, but for me he’s not been openly available when other players have had the ball. Been marked out the game way to easily for me. Apologies to pee anyone off. Just my opinion
Here is one for you. When was the last time we had a giant killing? Either beating a team in the division above. Or just a bigger team in general in the division we were in at the time?
I make it we won Five penalty shoot outs & lost Fourteen.
The link below has us winning four penalty shoot outs & losing Eleven. But there is a few missing that I have put in below. Might have missed out on some too.
The ones that come to mind straight away that are missing from the link above Chelsea away in the Zenith Data cup in 1991 Chelsea at Home in the quarter finals at Portman Road in 1998 Arsenal U21s at Portman Road in 2021 in the EDL
Although we did beat Luton in 1991 at Portman Road
