Post left yesterday on the Bobby Robson Facebook page regarding Peter Canavan by WC Mc.
How the world has changed and how quickly time goes past. 7th of April 1975 I came to Ipswich Town for the first time on trials. 50 years ago today. My dad put me on the 08:20 train from my home village of Kirkconnel in South West Scotland. I got off at Carlisle .Changed trains got on the train for London Euston. Off at Euston got the underground to Liverpool Street . Got train from Liverpool Street to Ipswich and the head scout Ron Gray got me off the train at Ipswich. He took me to a little hotel not far from the ground called the Portman Hotel and introduced me to another 13 year old on his first trial. A young man from Telford in Shropshire called Peter Canavan. We both eventually signed for the club on the same day 17/ 7 / 1977 ironically it was my 16th birthday. Peter was tragically killed in a car crash and to this day I’m sure like me all his teammates still think of him and what might have been. Peter was so good that Sir Bobby didn’t sign a player that for 47 years has been a great friend of mine. A lot of you won’t know this but when Mich D’vray came on trial his best friend was also on trial. Sir Bobby signed Mich but didn’t sign the brilliant Richard Gough . Due to having The Beat and big Al in first team and Butch and Russell in Reserves and of course having Peter What we would give for those players now. I never made it at the club but did manage to play in SPL with Patrick Thistle. After my beloved Rangers it’s the first result I look for every week Great memories of some wonderful wonderful people and players. And amazing times Especially our firey Scottish contingent George and Warky Alan Brazil and Peter Shields Keith Millican Ian Phillips and Jim King and how we all looked out for one another Sorry guys just thinking back a bloody half century ago and it feels like yesterday The good times will come back I’m sure 💙🤍
Great way for Cooper to finish his last season for us. Funnily enough the last time he actually played at Portman Road in a Town shirt he not only kept a clean sheet, he also saved a penalty. Although that was at the Churchman's end.
It's definitely either the 1986/87 1987/88 season or 1988/89 season. Im pretty positive that's me top left where I stood every game on my lonesome :( Being slightly weird I got to the game early just to stand there. Funny how I still visually remember so much from that spot. Atkinson Hat-trick, Brennan's pen & Balthacha's debut where we won 5-1 (with all the goals coming in the second half at the Churchman's end) automatically come to mind. Pure TWTD stuff
Then I made some friends & they convinced me to switch over to the North Stand where even more memories were made.
