Exeter City 1-1 Ipswich Town (4-2 on pens) - Highlights

@itfc bishop

Cheers fella. I think you are right in that for a lot of people the result is the only thing that matters and how we play is just an aside. Ive just rewatched the highlights and there are passages of play that are as good as Ive seen in a long time so not entirely sure where all of the negativity comes from those who didnt watch the game. I also agree with you in that I'm not sure why there has to be so much vitriol and negativity. It almost seems that some fans want us to play badly to support their views. There seems to be too many people on here that state their opinions as fact. Im not sure that I would go as far as saying 'clueless' (even if I think its true!) because we all have different experiences of playing and watching football so there will always be a spectrum of 'footballing knowledge'. And at the end of the day we're all entitled to our own opinions. I'm more than happy to have my opinions questioned. Its how we learn about the game, but my opinions are just that, opinions. I just wish that the fans who harbour negative opinions would seem a bit happier to be proved wrong.

Guys,
I think some perspective is needed here. It wasnt so long ago that an Ipswich side full of experienced 'Championship' standard players, who had plenty of time to both gel as a team and to understand the managers tactics, were given a public footballing lesson by Crawley Town. On the whole we had most of the possesion against an Exeter side who will probably do well this season. Yes, we probably should have won given that possesion, but given extra time or a replay we most likely would have won the tie and all of the rediculous negativity thats been seen on this board wouldnt have arisen. Only complaint I have with PH is why they didnt practice penalties. I cant believe for one moment that Teddy had practiced that pen.

Tuesday was my first game this year and for the first time in 6 years I saw an Ipswich centre half look to pass the ball to a CM feet, and the CM turn with the ball and make a forward run or pass towards the oponents goal. Its pretty scary when a pass between two Ipswich players is enough to catch your attention and shows that a change was definitely needed.

I dont really get the whole 'team of div 1 players' complaint. Out of the 9 newbies, the two prem loans look usefull. Edwards, Nolan and Nsiala look like they will more than cope with the step up. And we have to give the two forwards more games before passing judgement. I was actually pretty impressed with Nsiala. He looked comfortable passing the ball around the back four. There were a couple of moments when i thought he might have been caught out defensively but he used his pace and strength to recover when needed. I think he will be a good player for us.

On the whole I thought we played fairly well. It was refereshing to watch us pass the ball around again. Yes, we obviously lacked a cutting edge in the last third but playing one up top is always going to be difficult when the team doesnt have genuine width, and losing Edwards didnt help that cause. I wasnt terribly convinced that Sears on the left worked. In fact, one big plus on the night that no one has seemed to mention was that Rowe looked pretty useful wide on the left when he came on. He showed lots of confidence, and carried the ball forward and enabled us to get our midfielders into the box.

Clearly, lots of work still needs to be done but for me the signs are there that we are heading in the right direction. Yes, I think we will have a tough season and will have to learn quickly but with all the money being spent in this division it was always going to be difficult this year. For all those people saying we are defo going to get relegated. Why arent you remortgaging and betting your house on us to go down then? Pics of betting slips please. I see no reason why we cant give Villa a game on saturday. Lets get behind the boys and PH and help them push on.
