This is one of the big problems regarding the salary cap in the early years when a number of players are on contracts signed prior to the salary cap but we "benefit" from the average salary applying. Waiting until the end of the season is not ideal either as someone like Jackson can talk to other clubs from January. If you were him and his agent, that it exactly what you would be doing as you can't wait until the end of the season. However taking up the option means that it is less likely that we can take up the options of other players owing to salary cap restrictions. I see there being a big risk that we lose players that could command a transfer fee as we are not in a position to protect the asset by offering a competitive contract at an early enough stage.
