Me and the Mrs got the train from Rome to Naples last year. It was an absolute dream of a journey. I think we booked first class, but this was still only about £20 a head, for one way and such good value compared to the UK. For that we got massive seats in a private booth, a bottle of wine and selection of cheeses. We really weren't expecting that level of service so had already stocked up at the highly recommended food market at Rome station. We boarded a few minutes early, but the guard let me have a fag on the platform and let me know when I needed to board. Exceptionally well run |

 | Forum Reply | Anyone ever challenged their council tax band before? at 17:18 14 Mar 2025
We did successfully when we moved in to a converted chapel four years ago. Whacked us in a ridiculous band, I think it was G!?? We appealed and provided loads of evidence as to why it should have been band E - the same as every other house on the street. We had a lot of factors in our favour, like no parking, no street lighting, fewer bedrooms than nearby houses and no garden. They folded when it transpired that the valuation officer hadn’t even visited the property. I think you can only appeal in once, so go in hard from day one and provide photos. It was pretty easy to dance around their objections. Good luck |

Honestly think he’s our best defender. Said this for years and he’s raised his game to the PL. He should start every game; so controlled and chilled on the ball, numerous blocks, but never gets in drama. Chilled, reliable, likes dogs. F’king hero |
 | Forum Reply | Gambling harms - punter vs bookmaker, who's at fault? at 19:37 10 Feb 2025
Yeah Jake, I would have found a way to manipulate you in to placing a bet. The affiliate sector is a totally different conversation but one that is also hugely influential. I really don’t know why we don’t reinstall the 9% (or increase to 20%) levy on bets. |

Really interesting thread. I worked in online gambling in its infancy and it was absolute wild west in terms of data theft, sharing, shonkiness. It has become far more regulated but almost pointless betting online now, as they’ll cancel, restrict, ban. My moment of looking in to a mirror and thinking ‘you c***’, came after analysing data of female, online bingo players in the north. I tracked deposit dates (most were every other Friday in line with factory wages), which I knew was payday. So we’d offer to match a deposited stake if they doubled their normal deposit, exactly at payday via email and push notification. If they couldn’t afford it, we could add it the charge to their mobile phone bill (only O2 as I did the deal). Said company made millions. Barely gamble anymore despite loving horse racing - but I’d always put on a physical bet in a shop now. F*** the online options |

This is amazing. I seem to spend half my life in Euston station losing the will to live, so I shall switch my allegiance from the Doric Arch to the Square Tavern. |

I think the only pool table around there will be in Skinners (road behind O'Neils). Somerstown Coffee House (its a pub) is a short walk to Euston and quieter. Then you've got the Rocket on Euston Road. Think there is still an irish pub by the Standard Hotel - maybe called the Dolphin or similar, only small but has a dartboard and a dodgy footie stream |

Mrs Kingscross puts Bepanthan on hers for a few days after. It’s the higher end nappy cream that you can get in any supermarket. She swears by it |

Ah...my wife works for Topps / Fanatics which is all the Match Attax etc, so could have helped - but you had to choose Panini! * Panini was and will always be the best football cards ;) |

I've got to that stage too. Have cracked open a beer and watching the snooker to try and calm down a bit. Most of my work is in the Baltics where it is a bank holiday tomorrow, so I already have an easy day in the morning. I don't want to overdo the beers (and have to get a cheap bag of speed in), but equally might take the dog to pub for a few hours to count down the hours. God, this is awful isn't it? Realise I sound like an Alan Bennet / John Cooper Clarke monologue |
