Just seen who West Brom are playing on Saturday…
at 21:01 25 Apr 2024

But if Leeds drop points tomorrow they could have overtaken them with a win - there'd be no reason for them to assume that wouldn't happen so therefore not give it all. The story of their changes is that they had injuries so had to make them.

If they'd have won they'd be 3 points off the team in 2nd who they still have to play. They had so much interest in that game and were awful.

Duff back to Barnsley?
at 13:56 25 Apr 2024

Reading the fan reaction yesterday it seemed the consensus was that he was heading for the exit at the end of the season (poor run of form - 3 wins in 12 since start of March, odd team selections, poor standard of football, talk of 'losing the dressing room', prickly comments in press etc.) but to get rid with 1 game (plus potential playoffs) left is very bizarre.

Seems like they think the board should have been more ruthless and sacked him several weeks ago.

Ah yeah, in my head was thinking a win and a draw from the 2 away matches would be fine but forgot about the last game in my calculations!

That would absolutely guarantee it, yes, and barring an improbable GD swing we'd have to do it if Leeds beat both QPR and Southampton.

Leeds dropping 2 points means 2 wins for us will be enough, if they drop 3 then a win and a draw will do it for us, if they completely fall apart and drop more than that then it'll only need 1 Town win.

The fact that Hull and Cov are both away might help us
at 13:16 24 Apr 2024

Dunno, can view it either way really. A packed, raucous PR on an evening could have given the players a big boost.

Hull will almost certainly have to throw the kitchen sink at us to go for a win unless they lose tonight and Norwich/West Brom make the maths for 6th impossible during the day on Saturday, but even still will want to go out on a high for their final home match of the season. That could either suit us or it could be another Blackburn but with better players attacking our goal.

Am with the consensus view though that winning that game will fill everyone with belief we can win the other two.

What are the chances that Hull, Coventry & Huddersfield
at 13:11 24 Apr 2024

The Hull and Huddersfield fans would be fairly happy for us to beat Leeds to the finish line I'd imagine but the only team that might make a few more changes than simply refreshing the squad is Coventry if they're out of playoff contention by Tuesday as they'll have had a helluva schedule up to that point.

Of all the things I didn’t think I’d end up hoping for tonight

If only West Brom could have taken a couple more of the 100,000 chances they had on Saturday. Think Leicester coming through that with a win gave them the necessary kick up the backside as for all Saints were woeful tonight, the Foxes played it perfectly and were super sharp.

That's that then

Yep, Southampton just not turned up at all, defending for that 2nd goal was dreadful.

Feared before the weekend we'd be forced into a position where we'll have to win all 3 and that may well be the case. Think I fancy QPR to get something against Leeds far more than I do Southampton on tonight's evidence.

Southampton haven't turned up yet (n/t)

Wouldn't be surprised if Martin's trying to fix it on purpose to give us a taller task. EFL must investigate.

Careful what you wish for 2.0
at 12:34 23 Apr 2024

There are obviously bad bits to being in the PL from a fans' perspective - VAR, KO times being shunted about all over the place, the general increase in stupidity and tedium of 'the discourse' etc. but the season before this one every promoted team stayed up so think it's a bit knee-jerk to say a promoted team is guaranteed a torrid time.

Obviously it will be much harder but there are teams in there (mentioned in this thread) that have shown that if you're smart enough you can do more than act as a punching bag for everyone else.

Anyone else feeling a little bit deflated this morning?

It was - Hirst was basically as good as done when last season ended and we were clearly going in relatively hard for Simms while that deal was getting thrashed out.

Think we just outgrew his ceiling quite rapidly which isn't really his fault. He'd only had one season at this level before for a Rotherham side who play like, well, Rotherham which is very different to what we demand from a striker. When we did need him to step up more he was out of form/sharpness and his time here was clearly coming to an end.

We definitely needed (and wanted) another striker in the summer, but for a number of reasons had to settle for Scarlett on loan which we all know didn't work out for anyone. Had we successfully landed Simms in addition to Hirst like we wanted we'd be as good as up by now.

Think of it this way...
at 10:52 23 Apr 2024

Just been playing around with the league calculator to reassure myself and worked out that if we take 7 points from the last 3 (which will be a good return on the face of it), that'll be enough if one of Leeds or Leicester take only 4 points from their games, which I think is very possible. 6 will actually be enough if Leeds only get 4.

Bit daft wasn't it really that those of us who made that point in the summer were shouted down for being too negative then as we approached January everyone and their dog agreed another striker was paramount.

The QPR game's the real tough one to take for me - every team can go through their results and say they should have picked up more points here and there but that game was just a bad combination of having too many players unavailable while half the ones who were playing were evidently feeling well below 100%.

A little bit as it would have been nice to have a bit more breathing room heading into our last games. Of course if QPR take points off Leeds on Friday we'll still have that so fingers crossed there.

Do think people are underestimating just how tough Hull and Coventry away back-to-back with next to no recovery time are as matches to win. All well and good saying it's in our hands and don't worry about anyone else but it's not as if we've got a couple of home matches against lower table fodder coming up.

That feels like a massive win for Leeds….
at 22:53 22 Apr 2024

Yeah points in the bag trumps games in hand every single time imo. Could just about stomach the 'could be a good point' narrative after Watford but wasn't at all sure about some of the nonchalance after Boro - really should have put them to bed.

Flip side of that is that every team can point to games they should have got more from - Leeds and Leicester will certainly be feeling they should have more points from the last couple of weeks.

Hopefully we feel better after Saturday with Leeds dropping points at QPR and us beating Hull so we regain a bit of control.

True though think I'd be physically sick if we went into the last day needing a win whilst hoping for a draw at Elland Road.

Cardiff were 'on the beach' on Saturday when they beat Southampton, likewise Bristol City when they halted Norwich's home winning run.

Do we want a Southampton win tomorrow now then?
at 22:26 22 Apr 2024

Probably after tonight. Leicester have already shown they've got a wobble in them after a bit of adversity. Would still need them to drop points again though most likely.
