Unfortunately this is the negative side of expanding the tournament. Let some absolute stinkers in who embarrass themselves and the competition by being completely crap and offering nothing to get even mildly excited about.

Good riddance.

Fotis Ioannidis again....
at 11:14 21 Jun 2024

What we know already I guess. Sign of the crazy times though that we're stumping up more than a club in European competition.

Seems Panathinaikos want to try and force a bit of a bidding war here.

I think that's why a lot of the talk about bringing individual players in is for the birds imo. It's not going to materially change much as we still have a RB at LB who doesn't even attempt to disguise the fact he's always looking to cut inside, and as you point out the midfield clearly hasn't been worked on properly and seems to have been cobbled together as an idea in the days before the opening match.

Obviously the hindrance of international football is you don't have the luxury of time to drill bespoke patterns of play into the team nor the ability to sign someone for a problem position, but the teams that have looked a step above so far (namely Germany and Spain) have got the best out of their players' strengths by having a clear idea of what they're doing and doing it very well. We're still doing our 'get in front then hang onto the lead' thing but with the players looking very uncomfortable doing it and not being sure how to approach a situation where we can do more than that.

Not sure what the solution is really other than hoping Shaw is back which will at least make the LHS look less dire and hoping we can give ourselves a bit of a kick up the backside. Despite ceding control of both games pretty easily we've not looked that vulnerable and are defending ok so should still have enough to squeeze past Slovenia. God knows what will happen in the knockouts though.

In 1966 Alf Ramsey famously decided not to play Jimmy Greaves
at 11:45 20 Jun 2024

Michael Cox had a good article in The Athletic about it this week - pointed out that a lot of successful teams in International football in recent tournaments have compromised on the left hand side to fit a quality player in. Iniesta for Spain in 2010, Ozil for Germany 2014, Matuidi for France 2018, Mac Allister played on the left for the majority of Argentina's knockout games in 2022.

As has already been said think the more pertinent problem is no Shaw (or any genuine left back) to provide proper width so we struggle to get much through that side of the pitch. Not really a surprise that the side we looked most dangerous on the other night was the one with Saka and Walker on it.

Ironic that putting in safe standing....

Lot of old timers in there won't be happy about having people standing up near them, and they moan enough when we play a short pass under moderate pressure.

Bad news about home matches next season...
at 19:09 19 Jun 2024

No just much closer and making it a safe standing area - email for those in Block C went round this afternoon detailing the changes which includes a possibility that some people in C could find their view of part of the pitch slightly restricted because of away fans standing up.

Fotis Ioannidis - another offer rejected
at 12:12 19 Jun 2024

Suggests we're keen to get this done quickly and must have some indication that the player would be interested in joining. Could also be that if personal terms are agreed with Bologna, Panathinaikos are trying to use our interest to make them pay up.

Have to say I feel in my bones this is what we need - some big foreign lad no-one's heard of from a relatively minor league/nation to lead the line. Hopefully he's a nutcase as well.

Memberships & ballots
at 12:09 19 Jun 2024

It's like when they first brought in the memberships - the club essentially have to answer an impossible question of 'what is fair?'

A ballot will inevitably end up in 'my mate/dad/son/wife etc. got in but I didn't and we always go together' complaints but think it's the fairest way really.

The people who do go up and down the country for pretty much every game (and like to tell everyone that they do!) will be absolutely fine whatever tweaks to the system are made. As you say the people most at 'danger' of missing out are the ones towards the edge of the normal cut off point but think in that case you've just got to try and get to some early aways to build the points up a bit.

The club should always be trying their best to get new/younger fans engaged and accessibility to away games is part of that - given the demand the only solution to deal with the issue is to open a ballot system.

Going to go with a wildcard for a team that will go out relatively early but one player will bag almost all the goals they score - like the look of Artem Dovbyk on that front.

A bit of social media Chinese whispers going on
at 12:34 12 Jun 2024

Hmm, not a lot of compassion in that to me and the tone in which he said it was unnecessarily blunt imo. Don't need to personally ring each person apologising of course but don't think a little bit more understanding of what exactly moving entails for quite a lot of people would have gone amiss.

No-one's disputing that this had to happen, just that it could have been handled better. Ashton said they'd be in contact really quickly but they seem to have staggered the emails for some reason then given people next to no time to sort out where to move to.

Anyone who's spent any time in the ground at all will know the areas having to move contain a lot of old timers who have spent years building a little community among themselves which essentially have to be ripped up. Think that's what makes some of the comments (not yours) very off to me and the sort of entitled PL fan mindset people on here claim to hate.

More ticketing move balls ups
at 20:41 10 Jun 2024

They really have messed this up and it's pretty poor in all honesty.

Appreciate he was trying to protect staff to a degree but thought Ashton got the whole tone wrong from the start with his 'don't complain, get on with it' comments. He approached it with his coldhearted, corporate hat on rather than the human touch which was obviously going to be necessary.

He likes to go on about how much the history of the club matters and how important the fans are, but clearly no thought was given to the fact a lot of the people in the affected areas will be long-standing ST holders and/or older people more likely to get a bit confused and stuck with an abrupt 'choose a new seat tomorrow or miss out' type of email.

Cobbold Block C moving

I'm in Block C and not had any communication from the club so assume a portion of it is 'safe'. Guess they'll take a chunk of seats out and line the stewards/police in there rather than over-allocate seats to away fans.

Mine did that just before and during HT - quit the stream, waited a couple of mins and put it back on which fixed it but it's now gone back to buffering and a drop in video quality.

Multi-club ownership

Yeah I don't like it on principle either - clubs should have their own identities and shouldn't exist to be direct feeders to another club (outside of mutually beneficial things like us loaning kids to Bury Town or whoever which is different).

My read of it
at 16:59 27 May 2024

Yeah think that's right - we/McKenna had been given an indication that Utd weren't going to go for him so Ed the Yank convinced him to sod Brighton off.

Still not really pleased with how his team handled this by deliberately putting us in the middle of a media circus but glad it seems to be drawing to a close.

Steinberg update - McK to stay. perhaps.
at 16:06 27 May 2024

Only bit of that in the content of the article is "The 38-year-old is believed to be considering remaining at Ipswich." which is rather less convincing than the wording of his tweet.

Also seems to be quite a split in reporting over whether McKenna turned Chelsea down or they moved on from him.

Not good to have such loathing about one person but Russell Martin really is making this a difficult choice as normally it'd be Southampton all day for me.

I know Play Off finals tend to be cagey anyway but I just hope this one is properly entertaining - the POs across the divisions have been very dull/one-sided this year, disappointing.

If McKenna leaves, the new manager (transfers)
at 10:41 26 May 2024

All true but let's not act like managerial uncertainty isn't disruptive to transfer plans. Ashton's said several times how involved McKenna is in the process and in particular has a big say on whether he thinks player X will fit in in both playing style and character.

If a player is being convinced to join us, with McKenna being a big part of that, then that player might have hesitations if they're not sure whether the man who wants to sign him is going to be around much longer.

Not to say it means that will happen with every target and we've no chance of signing anyone but any doubt we (unintentionally) put in prospective signing's minds makes it a bit harder to close the deal and a bit easier for someone else to persuade them to join them instead.

Best thing for us if this all gets cleared up one way or another very quickly and we can move forwards.
