they could still feasibly get one of the auto promotion places by end of final game ? It's a long shot but with games over others and yet to face off with both Leeds and Leicester the chance is there they could actually do it. It's unlikely but distinct possibility all the same.

Martin team coach has made a name for himself this season and guess will be a target for other club names wanting to improve or take a chance should or when he decides to vacate position. He's a former NCFC player and while you can never wash that sin from your soul credit where it's due he's provided Southampton a chance this season and within reach of a standout achievement.

Crowd sounded flat again
at 03:56 11 Apr 2024

Whatever number we took to Norwich last weekend didn't make much noise either, at least that's what reviews and report suggested. Maybe fans voices here are just drained with all the excitement / hollering thus far this season, can't really provide a definitive answer to it.

We got near 30,000 tonight for a non-weekend game with Watford. So the crowd didn't react much or provide the noise some would hope for but rather that than go back to managerial roles with McCarthy, Jewell, Hurst, Lambert etc, and "fill" Portman Road to half capacity and so quiet you could listen in on squirrels in Christchurch Park.

If the team wins all four available games we got a promotion. First time in the elite league since 2002, it's kind of bizarre when you put it into text to realize just how long we've been away.

Unfortunately don't think it'll go for us. Coventry and Boro are going to battle like hell because they need wins themselves . Don't see much what Hull get up to but if comes down to winner take all with Huddersfield by final game, you can kind of imagine the trepidation and nerves within Portman Road if we're to make it.

4 defeats in last 54 league games
at 03:05 6 Mar 2024

Those are some incredible stats and initial thinking being, something you can take a certain amount of pride in.

Neutrals could argue League One was or is an easy league where points are readily available but that just isn't the case but we almost won it and amassed 100 goals through work-rate, desire and consistency. Putting together a damn good team, it still doesn't sit right Plymouth somehow got the league win instead of ourselves.

Never imagined back last summer we'd be in 2nd position in a higher league still losing very rarely and on the verge of successive promotions. This is without question, best time period in the club history going back to George Burley. All right, Royle saw some good times but we fell short when it mattered. This time we're stronger and better equipped than before. Goals scored freely, very few losses and the consistency is back. There's got to be further celebration ahead.

Whenever they're in a league outside the EPL most commentators and analysists will always view them as one of the promotion favorites at start of a season but maybe need to ask why.

Years back the selection may have been justified but they're just not nowhere near as strong as once before or indeed as good or impressive as some would believe. Could well have become the North-East's third team now behind Middlesbrough in terms of real time expectation.

Didn't they suffer some big score setback to Newcastle just recent in a Cup contest. Kind of tells a story.

Phenomenal effort to be keeping pace with Leicester, Leeds and Southampton.
at 03:01 19 Feb 2024

You got to understand we're unlikely to have another opportunity in a season like this for maybe some time in which to become part of the EPL once again. Kind of similar back in 2001 for reaching the Champions League and although the team fell short back then and just missed out you can draw parallels here in where such a standout opportunity presents itself but only for what could be a limited time.

Thing is we got a real good chance of doing it if you view remaining fixtures. There's only a handful of arguable heavyweights or tough opponents for us to play, the rest seem on paper at least, Town victories or three points our way. Maybe appear over confident or something.

A disappointing game
at 03:32 28 Jan 2024

Soon as you got news of the opponents for Round Four you could only have eyes for the Fifth Round. Just seemed practical, there was never any hesitation in thinking we wouldn't make it through or they could prevent us further progress.

Next round was on a plate for the team, just appeared no other option other than a Town victory and place in final 16. That's what hurts about today, the opportunity was taken away by some freak result and what's more so many people have got news of it such is the magnitude of their win. Wouldn't have thought no more of it had they beaten anyone else (except Norwich maybe) but it happened to us.

This shouldn't affect future league form but we're what only 1 or 2 wins in 7 or 8 games in the Championship just recent and as read on another thread subject, the decline would appear to have started following the inability to beat Norwich few weeks back when the opportunity was clearly there.

Say again the best way the manager and team can redeem themselves from the Maidstone setback is to ensure we're in the top two automatic places by end of season. Results like this can really shake confidence. Now it's up to the team to meet the challenge - and succeed - in what remains of the season. If we're declared EPL status sometime in May, maybe before, then we can forget Maidstone, today, and any damn Cup competition with it.

The most embarrassing result in ITFC history.
at 03:03 28 Jan 2024

Didn't follow the team when conceded 10 to Fulham although of course with it when losing by similar score margin to Manchester United in '95. Back then and particularly the latter, the opposition were an all-star team full of class players while we were on a downward spiral out of the EPL , lost to Wrexham some weeks before in the F.A .Cup for good measure.

Today was different. Maidstone ain't no big team. They ain't no club set-up of all-stars and situated in some piss-ant league you can't even recognize. Still trying to figure out how we lost this game. Had a home advantage, come on leaps and bounds with McKenna and new ownership from say 2, 3 years back, (it were far removed from the Lincoln City mess) and we seemed to create far more opportunity and possession but somehow took defeat from it. Someone, somewhere HAS to be at fault.

Warnock

Wonder the whole time we were in disarray from Roy Keane to Lambert that Neil Warnock may have been available to come in and take over duties.

Would have been essentially the whole era of the Marcus Evans tenure but for all those seasons of decay and damage, he might at one time or another have been persuaded to come on board and steer the club name towards a more successful route. A number of years of train wreck seasons may just have been avoided. Maybe Evans just didn't like the idea or never really considered it but in retrospect it does seem something of a missed opportunity.

Broadhead
at 02:56 23 Jan 2024

He didn't start this evening ? Seems the manager played Jackson on his own up front.

Either he's not match fit and McKenna didn't want to risk his participation or was content to allow the usual formation and see how it played out.

Seems that didn't work for us and only when Broadhead came on second-half did we start to play or threaten the opposition. McKenna only seems to play 1 in forward attack but for a game like today where points were real crucial against Leicester, thought maybe an extra man in forward position would have worked for us. Jackson it seems did well but would have liked to have seen both him and Broadhead from the start in it together. Can't remember if Aluko was involved at any time of fixture, maybe need to visit game report once again.

Leeds United are the first team to be promoted
at 03:33 24 Dec 2023

i'll allow them plaudits if only for scoring four at both Portman Road and again earlier in their home game against us. They got a victory at Leicester also ?

You / I / We may not like them but they're a useful team it's got to be said. I'd rather move on from the game, concentrate on our own endeavors. We're performing better in the league than them with a squad assembled at a snip of the cost of their own.

Maybe they WERE getting carried away by the big win but they got ground to make up while we can only pull away again with victories in future games and they drop points at the same time. No season is won or decided at this stage of games.

We were League 1 last season!
at 02:49 17 Dec 2023

not so much upset, just initial frustration and disappointment in not winning, after all we dominated them for large sections of the game and should ideally have won. It's a shame if not regrettable but the bigger picture indicates we're going places this season they simply can't reach.

Suggest every fan of our club right now, Take a moment to reflect we're achieving heights you could only dream of just 2 / 3 years back. Stormed League One last time out, should have won the league not Plymouth, 100 goals and near same points, and now on the road to once again being an EPL team for far longer than what is acceptable.

Best times here since Joe Royle, all right he failed his promotion target but we're seeing fun and exciting play once again after all those years with again hope and expectation. Bottom line it's a pleasure to support the team once more. McKenna and new owners take all available accolades.

Winning at theirs will just be all the sweeter.
at 02:32 17 Dec 2023

If we create as many chances today particularly first period in the return game and convert them it just should be enough.

We make the trip there penultimate month of the season if correct, a lot can change in the league in the time inbetween but guessing we'll be in or around the automatic promotion slots still whereas they'll be making a determined effort to salvage a top six finish. Whether it happens with or without Wagner is open to question but somehow think that's how it's going to be.

Think of the pressure fans there and team will be under when the time arises not only to meet demand of the fans to win but keep the 'streak intact etc etc' and the probable need for points to assist them towards a (at best) 5th or 6th place finish. It should be easier for us simply due to the demands of what's required of them at time of event.

Frustrating end to the season.....
at 01:43 24 Apr 2022

you got to be tough to follow this team. Strong will and character.

I couldn't abide McCarthy but he got us to a play-off finish (even if the remainder of it were near total garbage) Other than that haven't been caught up in an end of season finish since 2004-05 at least in terms of hope or what could be. Sometimes wonder what may have come to pass if Royle had stayed on that little bit longer but it's all rather hypothetical now.

Author says there's lots to do this summer, what more than one year back. Can't remember so much activity within the club that took place between June and August but pity is there's been no real end product from it.

McKenna had done well, there can be no question but truth is, got to feel disappointed with again what could or should have been, and like it or not, this season HAS met with failure.

Next season's strikers - who would you sign?
at 03:05 3 Apr 2022

Weinmann at Bristol City or Billy (William) Sharp at Sheffield United. Ashton's connections could well maneuver a deal for the fomer. Their respective clubs aren't maybe the best of their league but they're two players that hit goal quite regular.

OK we're a legue below them and should remain so but all things are possible. Don't always see what goes on in League Two but guess there's one or two gems you could pick out if you seeked hard enough.

Expect one or two of our own players to leave this summer. Certain names seem surplus. Pigott, Chaplin for example. Bonne just isn't the same player as once before but he's on loan anyhow. Aluko, Norwood even Jackson : guess we'll hang on to them but they don't always inspire confidence that they're collectively good enough. New strike power would seem imperative.

Reality Check...........
at 02:53 3 Apr 2022

it were a sh1t score. We've done well with McKenna up until now. Played with intent and ambition for the most part, an off-day was surely due. Too bad it had to be today.

Not sure what some expect from the manager. A virtual unknown coming in with next to nothing of real experience on his resume. Entered the third league of "football" to begin a proper coaching capacity and with it, a major mess left behind by his predecessor. In truth (thus far) he's a done a remarkable job of things.

Apologize if already mentioned
at 03:22 27 Feb 2022

May have missed it but saw no mention. Today was the 30 year anniversary of our Cup replay at Anfield when the opposition survived a no score draw (and goal frame) at Portman Road to take it to a second meeting in Liverpool.

Watched highlights before coming on, was sad in a sense to see a Town team playing with purpose and intent and really making a fight of it against a heavyweight name in a Cup competition. Such things are rare since then.

Some kids today missed out in the recent past when our squad went into an F.A. Cup match and really put on some entertainment or made later rounds Just for the record we lost 3 - 2 after a 0 - 0 at PR but you'd know that already. Had we won (that night) there was every chance of winning it in 1992 but it's all if but's and maybe's.

Won the league title though ! But watching again 30 years on from that night, kind of leaves a sense of what might have been. Tremendous effort from the team, we could and should have won that round.

OK 11 games to go
at 03:07 27 Feb 2022

It's a crap shoot you never know what will happen. Our season ends in April also ? What no games in May or anything, kind of surprised with that.

Only Rotherham and Oxford hold any trepidation with me, Portsmouth always get the better of us but this time imagine it'll be different. All other fixtures listed seem well within our grasp to take at least one point from if not victories.

Of course we'll have to rely on those above us slipping up in their respective games if promotion is to be a reality. All things considered and while it's feasible, just imagine promotion may just be out of reach for this season. Pity is, McKenna should have come in earlier.

Can we salvage something from this season ?
at 03:40 12 Dec 2021

simple math here is the team won't see a promotion and can't expect to get too far in the F.A. Cup with it. Should beat Barrow in the replay game and Barnsley is doable but to get beyond say Round Four seems doubtful.

The clear objective now is to finish in as high a position as possible in the league. It's a shame to write-off a season before end of year but you got to be realistic about the chances. McGreal could stay on or we could appoint any name available but even now got to accept and abandon all talk of a promotion.

Best shot, we get 8th or 9th in the League and being Fourth stage of the major Cup competition. Don't give a rat's ass for the Papa John trophy crap we are, or were,
involved in.
