The worst thing we can do now is sack Hurst
at 09:21 3 Oct 2018

From surfing the forum, there is obviously a huge amount of discontent and I understand it, its a results game but watching the games and watching the football, I just cannot come to the conclusion that the best idea would be to sack him.

For the past 10 years I've sat through the Roy Keane debacle, ingested the s**t Football Paul Jewell served up and countless 35 year-old loan players, watched on longingly as Mick McCarthy set us up for another 90 minutes of turgid long ball football with the intention of stealing a point from the opposition.

The point is the football were playing is not terrible, were just a team devoid of confidence. I would rather watch last nights performance or Saturdays performance again then any game played under Mick from October onwards. We created opportunities, several great balls across the box, Rudolph saved well from Chalobah, Sears looked bright. Jackson looked great on Saturday, Nolan had glimpses but you simply cant cater for the mistakes we make. Last night Chambers literally gave the ball to Downing, what can Hurst do?! The team makes a dreadful attempt to press properly and then cant pressure the ball. Yes you can say that's Hurst fault for not practising it properly but these are grown men, paid to play football. Its no use saying the recruitment isn't good enough etc etc a full team press is a staple of every single team in every league. It's just lapses in concentration at key times.

The point is that this team will come good and this manager will come good. As with every manager though we have to give them time to adjust and change a culture.

I know a few will disagree but this is no where near the depths we reached under Keane, under Jewell and under McCarthy.

If we sack him we will end up with another 'experienced' manager like Megson/ Holloway who get a few quick points and in 2 years time we will be at the same cross roads we were in the summer. This is the change we asked for so lets be patient. We know Evans will give him time so lets get behind the lads again and pray that our first win comes on Saturday!

Marcus Maddison??
at 10:21 10 Aug 2018

Interesting the Darragh MacAnthony said a champ club came in with a substantial late loan bid for Maddison with option to buy in Jan?

Any potential it could be us given the late nature of Garner's deal? Could play along any of PH's attacking midfield three...

Annual テつ」5 transfer budget....
at 23:19 7 Aug 2018

I have no problem with Waggy leaving and I also have no problem with Evans, I would rather PH get 3/4 players of his ilk than have just Waghorn at his disposal. But with our league being pumped with more money year on year how long can we honestly go on without attempting to build on our squad in the transfer market?

Im not calling to buy championship/ prem journeyman because as were experiencing, even the lower league boys aren't cheap.

We have several young promising players who could command big transfer fees in the years to come but how will we ever move forward or even stay consistent if we have to continually sell our best assets to attempt to build a better squad?

This strategy will have to evolve in the next few years as it simply won't be possible to stay competitive without spending on top of what you've got.

Food for thought for the man with テつ」765 million in his back pocket.....

Derby FFP

Anyone else hoping Derby get a FFP walloping at the end of the year after they've finished 10th and had to pay a テつ」5 mil severance for sacking Lampard after 5 months?

Accrington Chairman/ Jackson
at 11:57 3 Aug 2018

So Stanley rejected 1.5/ 1.75 million for a player in the last year of his deal when they will get half in January and nothing in the summer. Chairman says someone is going to pay his valuation but when?!

They get about 1.3 mil in payments regardless of where the finish in League 1 so keeping him to try and push on is fairly irrelevant and TV money is almost no existent unless your Sunderland in League 1 this year.

I don't understand how this makes any financial sense for them.... just holding back a promising player for the sake of appeasing a fan base?

Centre Back
at 09:45 2 Aug 2018

I really hope were still after both Tilt and Nsiala, If Chambo gets injured at all I hate the thought of either of Spence or Knudsen going into a two. You just cant have part time CB's in the championship... both fairly shaky there at times...

If presumably Donacien has been signed as a starting fullback going off what PH said recently we still really need two out and out CB's

Winger/ Left Back still needed?
at 19:50 1 Aug 2018

Can't help but feel that we need another winger and a left back should Knudsen leave. Especially given PH stated that wingers were a priority early on?

I guess he could rotate Rowe/ Ward/ Sears/ Roberts but feel like there could definitely be another coming in to nail down that position...

Ipswich Owner vs Derby Owner

Anyone know how Derby consistently fund their ridiculous annual spending with parachute payments?

Just had a look and their owner is テつ」265 million poorer than Evans....

Waggy is gone, lets look forward...
at 00:17 25 Jul 2018

Its inevitable now and as always its disappointing to lose your best player but this time last year he was a 250k gamble with the possibility he might produce. He did produce and 8 million is a fantastic return for a player in his late 20's thats has had one prolific season in terms of assists and goals.

Yes we will miss his creativity and delivery from set piece, of course we will miss his goals but this isn't a terrible the doomsday scenario that so many on this forum are making out.

If Evans is true to his word, PH now has the best part of 10 million from sales to invest in the playing squad that is looking thread bare and could snap if we have an injury crisis much like the last 2 years.

This money gives PH a chance to build his team, maybe he can go and get Nolan from the shrews who seemed to be driving force to his team last year. Or we can maybe look at getting 5/6 good quality players for the price of 1.

Its not ideal and Evans' record with reinvesting fees is fairly non existent (Although I suspect the fees that went into the likes of Berra, Stephen Hunt, Murph, McGoldrick wages during MM's reign (who would still likely be in top few highest paid players now) would have taken out a fair chunk)

Lets not throw our toys out the pram yet, PH has consistently recruited well for every club he's been at and the reports back from those that went tonight re Edwards/ Harrison seem positive! Lets just back the owner/ manager, a competitive ball hasn't been kicked and were already laying into the manager who by the way has barely every failed in his career and the owner who gave the vast majority what they wanted in May/ June!

Paul Hurst
at 10:34 30 May 2018

I will admit, I was always more keen on Ross purely because of the fearless attacking football St Mirren fans raved about in comparison to the slightly cagey hit a run stuff Shrewsbury played at times against Charlton.

However, I didn't realise quite how successful Hurst has been. He has promoted three of the four teams he's been with, took the other to Wembley twice when it wasn't expected. Hurst is a winner, he's never been sacked, never not exceeded expectations and comes here with a fantastic youthful foundation to build on.

If we cant all get behind him then there really is no hope for our fan base! Onward and Upwards!

Gerrard/ Lampard Discuss...
at 07:47 17 Apr 2018

I get that people want managers with previous experience and would be happy with either of these two had they had lower league experience. But the fact remains, these guys are most likely going to walk into a championship job as they're first job prior to League 1/2 because the turnover is so high that directors/ boards will be willing to take a risk on potential and a huge book of football connections;

We've done the 'knows his way out of the championship route' and the very reason Mick left is because a large proportion of fans couldn't stand to watch predictable boring defensive football. Either of the two mentioned above wouldn't even go near what we would perceive as an unaatractive way of playing football. They would lend on their influences and previous managers and isn't that what we all really want? An attempt at getting back to creating chances and playing football.

I know it would be a PR circus but this type of young, ambitious manager who has worked with quality players even at U18 level and would play football based on their previous experiences with world class managers is exactly what we should be aspiring to. I understand the Keane comparisons but Keane ruled by fear and was unfortunately a victim of his success at Sunderland. By the time we got him he thought he was the second coming of Fergie. The likes of Gerrard are significantly more humble and if we don't take a chance then somebody else in our division will.
