 | Forum Thread | Best team tonight? Does McKenna know his best team? at 14:02 3 Mar 2025
I’d prefer Woolfie, Burgess, Townsend, Szmodics, Broadhead, (Chaplin or Enciso if fit?), and Hirst anyway. Delap is a phenomenal talent, and will be England’s next centre forward, but for now Hirst may get more out of his team mates. Delap is too much of a one man band at times, and verging on selfish. Although, it’s probably just a desire to do well. Hirst could link play better, and although our defending has largely been poor, not utilising Hirst enough when fit is a negative. I hope he plays tonight at least. Ideally, I’d have liked both in the same team but appreciate that our lack of target man recruitment has cost us. Pity we’ve got four goalkeepers and only two centre forwards. Please no Muric. |
 | Forum Thread | The three behind Delap look like the Premiership future but at 14:05 22 Feb 2025
are they physically strong enough if Spurs bypass them today? Would have preferred Townsend to start with Davis and Broadhead ahead of him. Our three young attackers will thrive if we start well if we don’t I fear for our powers of recovery. |
 | Forum Thread | Harry Clarke would have been a better option at right wing back at 09:33 31 Jan 2025
than the fit options we currently have. Although I wasn’t a fan of Harry defensively, he had energy and passion driving forward and an impressive range of passing. Can’t see Godfrey or Johnson filling that role. Still think we should play 3-5-2 with Hirst and Delap as centre forwards playing close together. Concerned that it’s taking so long to get another No 9. Surely a back up No 9 can’t be that hard to get even if it’s a journeyman. We seem to have a surfeit of players for the 3 positions behind Delap, but apart from Broadhead and Chaplin, I’m not sure there up to the required standard yet? |
 | Forum Thread | Kieran has to change after today at 16:19 25 Jan 2025
Solidify the midfield. 3-5-2. Hirst and Delap up front. Hutchinson and Clarke lose possession too easily. I suspect (though may be unfair) that Philogene will be the same. They are young and will come good, but we are in a relegation battle so need energy, ball retention, game management, and playing the easy balls rather than quick feet running down blind alleys. |
 | Forum Thread | If Broadhead goes it’s a backwards step. at 07:13 24 Jan 2025
Although my memory is sketchy, this period under McKenna reminds me of the start of our decline under Burley following some amazing success with a settled team. The expensive purchase of a less than impressive Sereni (Muric), the expensive purchase of an unsuccessful Finidi George (most of our summer signings apart from Delap, O’Shea, and Cajuste). All those years ago I heard on the radio that Scowcroft had been released, and thought then that this was the first backward step. Admittedly, Scowcroft’s career did not improve following his release but it seemed to be a significant moment at the start of our decline. He was an important cog in our upward trajectory and Broadhead has been the same. Hopefully, he will stay, but if he doesn’t I’m not optimistic that his replacements are an upgrade? |
 | Forum Thread | Plan B? at 13:37 20 Jan 2025
I am disappointed that Hirst and Delap haven’t been tried up front together in a 3-4-1-2 formation with either Broadhead, Sammie, or Taylor behind them in the No 10 role. In games where we have little possession it may help to solidify the midfield and lessen the need for a manic charge (i.e. quick transition) when we have the ball. In the 3 behind the central striker system, both Clarke and Hutchinson tend to give the ball away hurriedly, and I fear Philogene will be the same type of player. Sir Bobby used Mariner and Brazil to pull the centre halves wide, thus allowing the great John Wark or Eric Gates more space to run from deep. Both Delap and Hirst would be great in this type of partnership as they can create goals out of nothing, can rough up defenders, and can work the lines or close together. In the current system Delap generally doesn’t have close enough support when holding up the ball. Kieran’s current system will work well when Hutchinson, Clarke, and Philogene have more experience and we are mid table. However, we are in a relegation fight and two highly skilled battering rams are needed… [Post edited 20 Jan 14:20]

Walton O’Shea. Burgess. Greaves Johnson. Cajuste Phillips. Davis Taylor Szmodics Delap Szmodics to stay close to Delap and run his socks off until half time when replaced by Hutchinson. |
