UPDATE Homophobic (Fashanu) Chant's- Plymouth to Paddington train
at 23:32 30 May 2022

Just to update two convictions have resulted from this (one pleaded guilty, one pleaded not guilty but was found guilty at court). The punishments were relatively minor, which isnt necessarily wrong if lessons have been learned, but both have been banned from PR and attending Ipswich games.

Feel like it sends an important message and glad that taking action results in an outcome. Thanks for all the advice and glad to show that speaking up is the right thing (even when some people's initial reaction even on this forum is to doubt.)

Sorry must have missed it there have been loads of posts to respond to.

Am awaiting a response from the police but not hopeful. The club have said the evidence is not enough as the videos only show bits of the chants at a time/ not the whole thing at once and doesn't show explicitly who is singing. I just have videos with parts of the chant in the background and then separate names/photos of who was singing it.

I am sure it is just the nature of typing things out as opposed to the conversation. Also just want to make it clear my apologies if my message insinuated at all that you were homophobic, far from it in any way!

Not at all, the attitude of seemingly questioning what I witnessed. I wasn't calling you homophobic, I am just perplexed at your seeming desire to call into question my account of events when you weren't there?

I have no need to lie, I didn't know these idiots, I don't wish to know them. At the start of the journey didn't really care about them, I was happy to join in with a few blue armys but then when the homophobic chants started at infrequent intervals I didnt want to be associated with them.

From that point I tried to take some sneaky videos and listened into what they were saying.

There was chants of XXXXX (name) does what he wants, he does what he wants etc... and then some others were calling down the carriage at eachother. One of them was saying about how he was a f*****g science teacher and its a piece of cake etc.. laughing about it, maybe bragging wasn't the right word but he was definitely not shy about it (i am sorry if my semantics offend you).

The issue seems to be you are judging their actions of those of reasonable, rational people which they were not.

So if you want to continue to question my rhetoric then I guess go for it but I would just think if someone else is reading this who has been intimidated about saying something because people will call them a grass or think they are not telling the truth, how would your unexplainably suspicious attitude make them feel? Like I said I have no reason to lie.

It's a little too convenient for your story don't you think?
- This kind of attitude is why people are hesitant to post things publicly. This and the attitude of people like sitters. Your first thought is to discredit and question then offer lukewarm support in some kind of afterthought.

They were chanting eachothers names, only got two of them, then they were talking/bragging about some of their workplaces (one of which was a teacher). In a 3 1/2 journey, lots gets mentioned and talked about. Most of it was general chat some of which I noted after the homophobic chanting in order to try find these people so that I could report them. Does this suffice for you?

What would be convenient is if it never happened and I didn't have to report it to be honest.

How is any of this convenient for me or for anyone?

Yeah I think I just got unlucky, some other carriages just seemed like good natured fun but unfortunately not in the middle of the train.

In what way do you mean odd I am intrigued?

As I explained earlier I have a mismatch of names, photos and videos, The videos each show bits of the chant but dont catch exactly who is doing the chanting, the photos show the key people and only have the full names of two of the people and first names of some others.

So its not conclusive in that sense and the club say they cant act on that alone. Another witness would be great help.

Not angry at the wrong person, in fact its very clear who I am angry at hence the attempts to get them punished.

I just think the fact you have created a situation in which you feel the need to state you are not homophobic says a hell of a lot.

Also the only person to find the grass comment worthy of an upvote. Think you are part of the problem much more than you realise

Firstly, see Phil's post above. It is clear you seem to feel the need to really stamp on the grave of a man who had charges against him dropped and was a trailblazer in sport who suffered awfully due to his race/sexuality.

Secondly, where did I once idolise Fashanu in this, he is the reference point but this is much wider than that.

Thirdly, the fact you keep hammering the point and even feel the need to state you are against homophobia suggests you aren't anywhere close to the right side of this

Videos don't have enough longevity with focus on people singing, only managed to catch snippets with photos of people separately on the count of I didn't want to get the sh*** beaten out of me by 10/15 drunk idiots for catching them doing something they knew was wrong.

I mean you chose to go out of your way to point out something I am sure we are all aware of and that was undoubtedly problematic (but also linked to the posts above very valid points related to the suppression of his identity).

The post simply laid out some very true and nuanced points relating to an undoubtedly complex man and on a post that is about catching people who are disrespecting him because of his race/sexuality over 20 years later, you feel the need to point score?

Not saying its right but... basically the equivalent to I have some friends who are XXX. I was not commenting on Fashanu as an individual but the clear homophobic, racist (lets be real) and all round grim connotations of that song that is hid behind the facade of football rivalry banter.

Don't use a minor point to hide the actual issue of this post.

Hi all,

Really wish that I didn't have to post this sort of thing but I was wondering if anyone was on the 18:16 train from Plymouth to London Paddington, specifically around carriages C-E. I was on this train, and alongside general anti-social behaviour which caused BTP to be called twice, there were several chants of the homophobic song related to Justin Fashanu from several Ipswich fans. This song was sung several times and despite them being aware it was wrong and some people mentioning it to them they simply did not care.

I have spoken to the club and the police about this and despite managing to get videos/photos/names of these people, I unfortunately didn't get enough evidence for the club or police to do anything about these people. If anyone else saw anything send me a PM or contact the club as I really think these people need to face some kind of punishment and should not be allowed to represent the club (which they were doing in their shirts and singing Ipswich songs).
