Revolut
at 12:09 8 Jul 2025

Have Revolut, good for travel but not much different to Monzo etc really.

For me it is great as I work a German company, and our share scheme pays out in euros. Can avoid hefty currency fees by paying it in to my Revolut account in euros, even paying for the Premium account works out cheaper than the broker fees, and comes with some other nice perks (Tinder Plus would raise a few questions with the wife if utilised though)

Uber in Suffolk
at 16:11 9 Sep 2024

One for the locals - whenever I am back visiting the folks I always have my car / a lift...

I am due to attend a work event at the BT place nr Martlesham, and on the invite they have said "Uber and the like hasn't reached Suffolk yet". Is this really true?? Only asking as I need to leave early and get back to the station.

And no, parking at Gatwick on this occasion won't be practical

We went with the kids 2 years ago, stayed in 4 different places and hired a car to drive between. Stayed in Arenal by the volcano, then over to Monteverde and stayed on a farm in the valley, few days on the beach in Montezuma, then down the coast to Dominical.

If you want to do something without too much distance between the stops, I would say head towards Santa Elena / Monteverde for the cloud forest and adventure stuff, then head across to the pacific coast from a bit sun, sea and sand. Personally much preferred Montezuma and the area around there to the further down the coast towards Jaco (bit more commercialised, lots of yanks)

I find this quite an interesting topic - I worked with two people who were very good footballers. One was a St Mirren player under Ferguson but didn't make it and went on to be CEO of a global brewer, and another was in the Liverpool youths with Gerrard etc but got injured, and is also now very senior at the same brewer.

Guessing McKenna is a similar example of how that disappointment when you are operating at that level can be channeled in to something else, rather than maybe disappearing down a bit of drugs and alcohol

Is anyone here from Telford or visited there
at 14:13 27 Jun 2024

Glasgow? It's runs through the middle about as much as it does Telford.

Telford is awesome, I worked there for 6 months at the tank factory. It is literally a shopping center contained in a roundabout, what more do you want? Sadly it has been redeveloped since and ha lost a lot of its charm. Rob Edwards of Luton management fame, also comes from Telford I believe.

As said before, the best thing about it is the surrounding area - including the often overlooked Wrekin

Get searching on Amazon, you can up unbranded ones from there a lot cheaper. Mine has last 2x as long as the branded one, which died after a couple of years

Agree, you need to go all in on one brand - I have a combi drill, impact driver, strimmer and circular saw

AI gurus: any significant step change in what's being discussed on
at 11:51 11 Apr 2024

Depends on your definition of planning and reasoning...AI has been doing planning for years, it's the fact people don't like to think of mathematical optimisation as a form of AI as it isn't as sexy or new as GenAI. Mathematical optimisation has been planning supply chains for about 40+ years

I have Hive stuff (Thermostat, rad valves, bulbs etc), but mostly because I did a project there and I was provided with "samples" and didn't need to make a decision. Works perfectly fine for me, rad valves are a great way of only heating certain rooms when working from home - have seen a saving on oil as a result.

HS2....
at 13:20 3 Oct 2023

This is utter nonsense, your geography of Birmingham needs refreshing. Curzon St is pretty much on the boarder of the city centre and Digbeth. I have never struggled to get our New St at rush hour either - the only people that struggle are people incapable of reading signage.

If we actually executed on stuff HS2 was a good idea in its original form, but we don't, we do everything half baked because of not wanting to upset anyone, and at the same time manage to upset everyone.

EDIT - EV advice including charging point apps etc.
at 16:44 25 Sep 2023

And also, not all EVs are made equal. My MG4 seems to handle these things much better than people I know with E-tron, ID.3 or Borns. Our car is pretty much always used with the kids in, air con on, boot loaded, and generally racing away from traffic lights, and only getting about 20-30 miles less than advertised on a full charge
