AI gurus: any significant step change in what's being discussed on
at 11:51 11 Apr 2024

Depends on your definition of planning and reasoning...AI has been doing planning for years, it's the fact people don't like to think of mathematical optimisation as a form of AI as it isn't as sexy or new as GenAI. Mathematical optimisation has been planning supply chains for about 40+ years

Smart Heating
at 09:40 18 Oct 2023

I have Hive stuff (Thermostat, rad valves, bulbs etc), but mostly because I did a project there and I was provided with "samples" and didn't need to make a decision. Works perfectly fine for me, rad valves are a great way of only heating certain rooms when working from home - have seen a saving on oil as a result.

HS2....
at 13:20 3 Oct 2023

This is utter nonsense, your geography of Birmingham needs refreshing. Curzon St is pretty much on the boarder of the city centre and Digbeth. I have never struggled to get our New St at rush hour either - the only people that struggle are people incapable of reading signage.

If we actually executed on stuff HS2 was a good idea in its original form, but we don't, we do everything half baked because of not wanting to upset anyone, and at the same time manage to upset everyone.

EDIT - EV advice including charging point apps etc.
at 16:44 25 Sep 2023

And also, not all EVs are made equal. My MG4 seems to handle these things much better than people I know with E-tron, ID.3 or Borns. Our car is pretty much always used with the kids in, air con on, boot loaded, and generally racing away from traffic lights, and only getting about 20-30 miles less than advertised on a full charge

EDIT - EV advice including charging point apps etc.

Posted on this the other day, but there really won't be one 'fuel' type in the future, but a mix to suit different requirements. Most people seem to be blinkered to this concept, and think one size must fit all.

As you say EVs are perfect your day to day, around town stuff, but hydrogen or e-fuel will be better for HGVs etc. There will probably be some kind of hybrid in between for those than need to long range but have lighter weight requirements.

E fuels could work, but there is still a lot of resource that goes in to making them. Same goes for Hydrogen. 2 things that I always say when people state "EV isn't the answer"...

1 - No, EV isn't the sole answer. The actual is a mix of fuel types. Electric - great for short, non range limited. Hydrogen - long distance, haulage etc. I did read an article with a good depiction of this mapping, but this one is close enough
https://www.advent.energy/2020/10/21/hydrogen-efuels-evs-transportation/

2 - Most emissions come from making cars, so actually breaking the system of "I need a new car every 3 years" is vital. Cars last a crazy amount longer than before, and the enhancements in core tech are slowing (or in some cases, making cars worse as anyone with lane keep assist will tell you)

A total shambles, and I am not quite sure what vote they are trying to win with this. The recycling / bin collection thing was actually a reasonable idea - the difference between councils is ridiculous, and drives a totally inefficient system.

Are they aiming for the UK to be known as the 'meh, whatevs' nation? We seem to stand for or lead anything anymore. I thought Brexit was about empowering us to be great again?

Abolition of peak rail fares
at 15:51 13 Sep 2023

The whole system needs an overhaul, so it is good to see some ideas like this being piloted. I believe they are piloting demand based, airline style fares on some routes in England, similar to airline ticketing - which is also a good idea.

Recently travelled from Leamington to Newcastle 1st class (company policy, not choice). Advance fare was £670 return, which I got down to £270 using split tickets. A colleague flew from London to Newcastle for £145. I can suck up the extra journey time and thoroughly enjoyed the journey, but the cost element really bugged me and is anti everything we should be encouraging as a nation

Disposable Vapes

I find it absolutely baffling how such a product was ever allowed on the market in the first place. They tick almost every box of what a product shouldn't be in the current climate, before you even consider the health impacts and the way they are seemingly marketed at younger people

Banning these is just a no brainer, not seen anyone opposing this apart from the manufacturers

Totally agree, felt like he was someone that performed saves that look great in pictures. He'd be useless with the modern day demands on keepers!

On a keeper theme, Hladky always got a hard time but now showing his true worth. If Walton comes back in and takes his place, will surely come up in this conversation in years to come

This is genuinely one of the few reasons I would have voted leave, and is genuinely the first time I have seen some one else put it into writing.

Problem is, a lot of leave voters, and I am including family members in this, didn't have the brain capacity to understand this level of reasoning and just grunt "migrants"

Getting back to the actual topic, and not the moronic diversion, they are awesome to watch, they just frickin love trying to score. No hoofing it constantly, no dramatics, just get the ball in hand and run in to someone.

Very unlucky not to get something last night (if you forget the bonus point and losing bonus point!)

Summer is officially over...
at 16:06 6 Sep 2023

Our PTA has done a great job of encouraging re-use of school uninform. Polo shirts for £1 etc, most of the stuff is like new. With how variable our weather can be, you could buy summer dresses and use them about 5 times etc.

Spending silly amounts on stuff kids to wear at school is madness. But maybe this is driven by not being allowed a pair of kickers in my youth...
