It’s funny how in the space of just a few games then bench has gone from looking weak to looking strong and full of options. That’s just after a few well publicised departures. I likes the fact that Clarke came on and scored again,

It’s early days and frankly Sheffield were dreadful and continued to try and play even after going behind and we’ll face tougher challenges but the strength from the bench will be vital to change games.

He come in for lots of criticism last season, he’s always played high up the pitch and his side was clearly targeted in the premiership. I was worried we might not see the best of him after last season. But last night he was superb Yes Philogene stole the headlines and rightly so, but Davis looked to be back to his best. Hopefully teams will now be petrified of Philogene coming back inside and we’ll see him exploiting the space that will be available.

Yes he struggled last season but anyone who watched him in the Championship surely couldn’t write him off so early this season. All his goals were good finishes and the combination between him and Leif was as good as any I’ve seen since McKenna has been in charge.

Plus Clarke getting another goal. We can’t get carried away after one result but I think there’s a lot more to come from the team but let’s be prepared for a few more bumps along the road.

I’m like most of the fans like Chaplin and sad to see him move on.

I watched him Saturday and don’t think he made a huge impact on the game and we now have other, hopefully better options at the club. They might take a few games to show this but would it be fair to keep Chaplin knowing in 3-4 games he’s going to 3rd choice.

He hasn’t been getting much game time so in fairness to him we’ve done the right think and let him go out on loan. Plus we don’t know if the player himself was desperate to leave.

As with Wolfy it’s the right time to move on.

Player ratings and general thoughts on yesterday
at 16:29 31 Aug 2025

I thought after we scored we played much better in the first half with midfield bossing the game and was really expecting us to go on and win comfortably but the penalty right after half time really changed the game.

It was a dreadful second half to watch. Won’t pretend I wasn’t worried about Clarke taking the penalty but even if the keeper went the right way I doubt he would have saved it, hopefully that will breath some confidence into his game.

Stopping time wasting
at 16:20 31 Aug 2025

The amount of Derby players who had head injuries was amazing. It was laughable when the Derby players laid on the ground whilst getting treatment, sat up eventually only for the physio to make him lie down again.

The keeper was called over to the bench and clearly told to go down injured and promptly did so a few minutes later.

Surely Derby fans can’t enjoy watching that every week they clearly spend a lot of time faking injury in training because you can’t be that good at it without practice.

Agree completely, just don’t get people wanting to bring him back. Very average in his last season, won’t come cheap and not done much since he left Town.

It looks like we’ve dropped the “Premier League ready” strategy on recruit
at 11:21 28 Aug 2025

I think it’s much more likely one of the promoted teams stays up this season.

With Wolves, Brentford and Bournemouth having sold all their best players and West Ham seem even worse than they were last season I think one or more if those teams gets relegated.

We weren’t good enough last season not trying to pretend otherwise but I think some of the so called established teams are weaker than last season and don’t seem to be bringing in players of similar quality.

Hence the reason Wolves are turning down the crazy money Newcastle have offered for Larsen, they know to lose him as well will really hurt thier chances of not getting relegated. Personally I think he’s pretty average and not worth half that amount.

Played in 15 to Greaves 25 and not sure how many of those were substitute appearances. Greaves made mistakes I’m not saying otherwise. But Woolfy is not a better player than either of the current centre backs and wouldn’t have made any difference Saturday, in fact probably would have struggled more at the beginning. I like him and not saying he’s a bad player just that him starting wouldn’t have added anything to our performance.

Greaves was way further up the pitch Saturday than I’ve seen Woolfy venture. Yes Greaves struggled last season but he wasn’t the only one and seems to be someone who gets the blame for all our defensive woes.

Though we defended well Saturday apart from opening few minutes and I actually think the defence will be good this season. Woolfy is just as prone to a mistake as Greaves so can’t see why he should be staring.

Wish we’d have had a fully firing Omari last season, went missing in way too many games. Because of his form in the second half of our promotion season he escaped criticism at the time but he didn’t deliver last season. Sure most Town fans hoped he’d stay and help us do well this season.

Not excusing the abuse he got.

Crazy that he might have a new manager soon and not sure how things will go for him if he continues to miss chances like he did yesterday.

From the radio and comments, it sounds like Azor is showing some green shoots?
at 13:55 24 Aug 2025

In only 3 games we’ve seen big improvements from him.

I still wish we’d play 3 in midfield on occasions, over last 2 seasons we’ve had lots of games where we just get overrun in midfield. We do ask a lot of our 2 midfielders in this formation.

Really hoping with another week we’ll see Cajuste start. I’ve never been a fan of Taylor and wouldn’t be upset to see him sold. He doesn’t seem to have improved. Not blaming him for all our troubles at present though. The whole team seems so low in confidence. Its early days and after the mauling we got last season hardly a surprise we’re still struggling. Hopefully a few extra players in and get a couple of ugly wins and it could all change very quickly.

I can’t see him replacing either of the centre half’s. Did Preston actually create anything apart for first few minutes and Greaves carried the ball forward better than Woolfy can? Last season the defence struggled but already we seem stronger in defence.

It’s the attacking threat that’s letting us down at the moment plus I think all the players are low on confidence after last season. I like Woolfy but think he may move on.-

I thought he was going to be a great signing last season…was convinced under McKenna and with regular game time we’d see something of the pre Man City Phillips.

Unfortunately he just couldn’t stay fit long enough and every time he started to show glimpses of quality he got injured.

Really difficult to see where he goes from here. If he did have a longstanding injury that’s been sorted and can now stay fit I wouldn’t be against giving him another chance but only on loan with no silly wages. Just can’t see it happening though. A run of games could see some real improvement.

Armstrong wasn’t much better…got away with countless fouls and most of the time when they played the ball to him he wasn’t even looking at it more intent on fouling the defender.

Don’t know how him and Downes avoided a yellow card.

Yes we need another striker because the last 15-20 minutes Hirst look exhausted but we saw today the way he brings other people into the game in a way we never saw from Delap.

But I don’t think he was awful far from it. I also this Szmodics needs to play behind the striker. Looks much more threatening that when he’s on the wing. Also Hirst injury record is not great .

Looking at Southampton..
at 20:38 17 Aug 2025

Pretty sure Southampton will lose a couple of players before the transfer window closes.

I think they will get weaker where as I hope we bring in a few more players to strengthen the team as well as Jens and Akpom getting up to speed.its an important couple of weeks.

I agree completely. Didn’t see anything special from him today and didn’t see anything special from him in the season before he left.

If he wasn’t an ex player we wouldn’t even be talking about him. Didn’t make it with West Ham. Was he the best midfield on the pitch today. Possibly but Towns midfield will improve and think we just need to move on from him.

I could see us signing Rak-Saki. I think Palace want to sell him and he would be the sort of player who could flourish under MCkenna.
