"Our squad's too big". Yep "Hurst was a massive error". Yep "Lambert added to rather than trimmed an already bloated squad". Yep "Lambert didn't know what he was doing". Pretty much. "Although unfair on some individuals the players as a group don't have the right attitude". So it would appear. "The players lack confidence". Yep "The club lacks the appropriate structure for 'the modern game'". Almost certainly "Evans has too much control for a football business naif and spends too little time exercising it". Seemingly so.
To a lesser or greater extent all of these seem to me to be playing/have played a part in seeing Town where they are and all need to be put right. Hurst and Lambert have gone but their and Evans' legacy live on.
Talk about patient, this will take years to correct.
There are problems throughout the team as witnessed from the variety of threads after last night's showing. Indeed, as evidenced from the last 3 years.
So if we are to play 4231 what do we need to play that system? :
I am concerned, for all that I'd love to see us out of this division, it would take 3 (maybe more) windows to resolve all the on field issues we have. And that with a supportive owner prepared to not only spend the required amount of money but let the footballing people decide where it is spent and when.
Are we likely to see that sort of commitment from Evans and are we patient enough to spend another couple of years in this division while that rebuild takes place?
Robespierre was eventually undone by his obsession with the vision of an ideal republic and his indifference to the human costs of installing it, which turned both members of the Convention and the French public against him. The Terror ended when he and fifty of his allies were arrested in the town hall on 9 Thermidor and executed the day after.
One chant from the North Stand and I have to say I agree.
For whatever reason our players did not turn up tonight.
Why? Well if I knew I wouldn't be posting here of course.
The fact remains that the senior players on the pitch hardly led by example (including the captain) and the other members of the team did little to show that they may have been uncomfortable with such an attitude. Yes harsh on some who I'm sure gave their all.
What would I do? Well I'd probably rip the heart out of the team and get rid of most of the "senior" players and anyone that Hurst signed and try to start again. That restart, given the owner's parsimonious approach ("We'd be dead without him" vs "He's a sadist …. just keeping us alive so we can feel the pain of more damage"), needs far better direction than I can give it but nevertheless I feel is required.
As a way of getting us up this season? Of course not. Next season? Probably not then either. As a way of building a team that might get us promoted in 2-3 years …. well maybe but needs the right manager (one of the major caveats here is that the only badge I have came courtesy of the Milky Bar Kid).
Sorry to whinge but for me as an old boy it was a bit like 'nam tonight: "You don't know man. You weren't there".
