Omari to Leeds would be a tough one to take
at 21:48 30 Apr 2025

Very loose statement.

£30m spent for Man Utd would be very different than £30m spent for Sheffield Utd.

Most confident going into a new season?
at 20:58 30 Apr 2025

There will be a different type of pressure next season.

There will be an expectation from outside the club, along with some clowns within the fan base who will just expect us to romp everyone 4-0 each week.

We will suddenly become teams ‘big’ games where everyone finds an extra %.

We will also be on the other side of the financial capacity, where it is with £15m wingers starting, and £15m centre backs, with £15m players coming off the bench - which will be a narrative pushed by media and opposing managers.

Different sort of pressure, KMc will know this, KMc I have no doubt will approach and handle appropriately, it’s how the players will react.

I wouldn’t say confident, don’t really like that phraseology - Championship is the most competitive league in the world.

Have to respect the league, respect the teams, and work to our absolute maximum to get out of it.

I’m looking forward to the summer shuffle to settle on a new group to take us on a journey like our L1 heroes.

Think it was £18m if I remember correctly - almost certain it was <£20m.

Anyone gets near £30m I’m snapping their hands off - although given the way the domestic UK market generally is, especially with young English talents, wouldn’t surprise me if someone does.

Talented boy but has struggled at times this season - actually think another season in the Championship would benefit more at the moment.

Sell if the number is right.

From a player trading perspective, which I would imagine we will become more active in the outgoings in future windows, it's important to sell at the right time.

If we could get £5m for Johnson who I'm not sure is quite the right fit for our system at RB, H.Clarke will return, and then that would leave us to either retain Axel (preferred choice), or look in the market for a really smart additions:
- Japhet Tanganga - £2m-£3m
- Timothy Fosu-Mensah - Free
- Jonjoe Kenny - Free

Carl Rushworth, Jason Knight & Flynn Downes
at 10:30 29 Apr 2025

We don't need Rushworth - Palmer is a good goalkeeper, Walton a good n.2 in the Championship.

GK: Palmer, Walton, Slicker - it's not an area we need to spend.

Downes I don't think will leave now, but Jason Knight is a good option, pressing machine if I remember him rightly.

That’s a cracking read, only just got round to reading it but that’s a really enjoyable read!

Interesting regarding the comments in terms of the significant upgrade in individual quality than last time we were in the Championship - of course they are significantly more expensive, but im not convinced some are actual upgrades on what was already in house.

It’s not easy, it’s easy to pay big fees and wages to get Championship players down to L1, but this was the reversal of that - this is when you earn your crust in the market.

It’s a tough task, to identify real talent and undervalued prices is the art of good transfer dealing - but to suggest that it is not possible, imo it just lacks any knowledge of the wider footballing world, and the transfer markets.

We don’t need to bring in seasoned premiership players - our two best players this season in Delap & Cajuste are far from seasoned.

You need to bring in quality at the right price - a Cajuste for £10m is the perfect model example. Hutchinson, Philogene, Clarke & Greaves for £80m probably is at the other end of the spectrum - it’s vastly overpaying.

Nope, afraid you’re wrong there imo.

Would have to have limited knowledge of the footballing world to think we couldn’t have been in a better position with our recruitment.

A lot of imagining going on here
at 15:26 28 Apr 2025

Not entirely, a lot of it is from our accounts, the notes within our accounts, and from other clubs accounts in a similar position (Sheff Utd).

It's far from 100% of course, but it's also not finger in the air either.

Championship clubs have good Euorpean networks - with the access to data online in the modern game, I think it is naïve to say we couldn't have been in a better position with our scouting network.

Financially I would imagine we will be sound - broadcast/commercial income will rocket towards the £150m barrier, transfers paid will be around £110m (£20m Hutchinson was in previous accounting period) - that will naturally be amortised over the player contracts though, imagine will look something like £25m per accounting year. Would imagine operating cost inc transfers will be between £90m-£100m.

We will be financially sound in the next set of accounts, but of course you have to think about the amortisation cost over the coming years on top of future fees, and continued operating costs - for that we need to balance the books a little with transfer fees in - it's an element of common sense to know that the books will need be balanced a little to run a continued sustainable club.

It's beginning to smell a lot like corruption....
at 22:55 27 Apr 2025

Birminghams accounts for their 22/23 campaign was at a low level £19m, but their 23/24 (relegation) campaign jumped to £28m.

Gate receipts doubled (no surprise with ownership change, new project bounce), broadcasting remained relatively level but ‘other commercial income’ doubled from £6m to £12m in the 12 months, which seems a significant increase - with the club stating it had secured the highest front-of-shirt sponsor outside the Premier League.

Other commercial income is defined as ‘sponsorship income, corporate hospitality, merchandising etc’.

I would find it difficult to see how their top line revenue would match that of a Sunderland, who I think pushed to around near £40m in last accounts - but then again anything is possible with a bit of ‘commercial income’ support.

Will be interesting to see how their finances unfold in the coming years - and I suspect it could go very much one of two ways.

I think our international recruitment was the biggest factor - so much better value for money overseas - just not sure we had that infrastructure in place this time - hopefully that is being worked on as we speak in the background for the future.

Domestically it’s an expensive market - I think ultimately we were backed with budget, but I don’t think we bought in enough quality with that budget.

We will need to sell though where possible, financially we will need to balance the books a little - would imagine, Delap, Davis, Philogene & Omari will be the most likely sellable assets.

Season of Struggle
at 17:46 26 Apr 2025

A season defined by our mistakes, both on and off the pitch.

A club is defined by its recruitment/squad building - and something we had done so well, but ultimately when we needed it most, to bridge the gap and uphill battle of the PL, we needed to identify really good players at really good prices - we didn’t get it right.

We can dissect it until the cows come home, but it’s far from complex, we simply didn’t build a good enough squad, and despite KMc incredibly abilities, even he could not perform this miracle.

We go back to the Championship, but we have hopefully learnt a lot of lessons about how to bridge that step to PL.

I’m excited to see how the summer unfolds, how we now reset the group a little and build for the next phase of the journey, which is to ultimately be a top 10 self sustainable PL side.

Players need to depart, players will arrive, with KMc remaining, it still excites me the journey ahead to our ultimate ambitions.

Glad we're out of this league

Some of the stuff the fan base has peddled out this season - corruption comments are just daft.

The reason we’re out of the league is because we haven’t been good enough - pure and simple.

Which contracted players could leave in the summer on top of Delap?
at 13:40 22 Apr 2025

Reshuffle is needed. Look like an unbalanced & settled group at the moment, where it was the foundation of our success from 22-24.

GK - Palmer, Walton, Slicker
RB - H.Clarke, B.Johnson
CB - O'Shea, Woolfenden, Greaves, Baggott, +1
LB - Townsend, +1
CDM - Morsy, Taylor, Luongo, +2
RM - Burns, Ogbene
CAM - Chaplin, Szmodics, Humphreys
LM - J.Clake, N.Broadhead
ST - G.Hirst

We will need to sell - spent a lot, and straight back down, balancing the books is required. Looking at 'sellable assets':
- Delap
- O.Hutchinson
- L.Davis
- Philogene
- Muric
- Tuanzebe
- Burgess

I think if we can get anything above £75m-£80m there we've done well.
