Sunderland Keeper Close to Joining Town
at 20:02:11

@jas0999 - always a useful commentator aren't you? So, after the point where we replaced an erratic Wright with Murphy, what was at the heart of last year's problems? Was it the goalkeeping, or was it the unsettled team and the complete lack of threat at the other end? Yet here we are days away from the start of the new season, with less strikers than we had, a likely seven players who know they're not wanted...but possibly a shiny new goalkeeper, presumably at the expense of a fair amount of budget. If Chopra rocks up then there's less grounds for doubting RK, but I for one am getting increasingly concered as the days run down. And I'd rather express that concern than just blindly cheer your hero's every move as the memory of attractive football at FPR gets more distant.

@SiBo - let's hope so, but having Akos Buszaky with him at QPR didn't stop him being crap, so if that logic plays any part in this transfer we're probably just throwing good money after bad.

@pickles110564 - I'm all for opinions, but if you're implying that Finidi George did not have footballing talent, then you sir are an idiot. And if we're just going to throw around extreme examples of both managers' talent-spotting highs and lows, then I shall counter yours with 'Thomas Gaardsoe.'

I'm not usually one to comment on speculative stories, but I'm sorry to say we can almost guarantee this one isn't paper talk.

So two things occur to me really. Firstly, with goalkeeping far from the cause of last year's farce, three keepers already available and Brian Murphy part of a small and ever-decreasing of RK's moves that were actually wise, surely we don't need to be spending any of a seemingly very precious budget on another keeper. Secondly, if a fellow countryman might help to settle Priskin down, how come Akos Buszaky didn't help to reduce his crapness at QPR? If this logic plays any part in this decision then we're just throwing good money after bad.

Oh and thirdly RK, knock on Sunderland's door all you like, if it's for Kenwyne Jones.

Firstly, I utterly support the club and wish them nothing but success whoever's at the helm. Nevertheless.
Think what you will of RK and of the quality of the team he inherited, but the fact remains that last season we finished 9th, and that did not result from a year's worth of fluke - the table doesn't lie. He was brought in to turn a team not far from being play-off candidates into a team that could challenge for promotion. If he'd been brought in to turn a Conference side into Champions League contenders, that might take a little more than a year and require a bit of an overhaul. But as it was, we required a few improvements in the right places, and we should have still been in a position to mount a challenge. Yet having spent several millions reshaping the squad to his design (mostly on crap, too - knowing what we know now, give me Tommy Miller over Martin and Edwards any day,) it took 15 matches to get the same points on the board that he did in three games last season with the old squad, and the highest we've been in the league all this season was alphabetically before the opening game. That can only be seen as a failure, especially for someone with supposed calibre and, we assume, the salary to match. We may have turned a corner, but we still walked a long way in the wrong direction.

Yup, right with you MBG, and would also like to remind that the three-month disaster is because of what RK did to the team, and the lack of a decent striker is down to RK not signing one last summer when the problem was just as evident.

SouperJim - some well-made points, and it's nice to hear from someone who actually recognises that Pablo makes a valuable contribution at least some of the time, as opposed to the brigade of 'OMG Healy and Murphy on loan all our problems are over bye bye Pablo and Stead in Keane we trust!!!!111one' cretins who seem ever more common on here and were the main focus of my original criticism.

On which note it is also a relief to hear your apparent view that the problems last year were substantially down to the way players were used, rather than who they were. I agree with this for the most part, and you certainly won't hear me disputing that Campo, Miller and Lisbie were deadweight. On the other side however, I would say that we had consistently better performances out of the likes of D Wright, R Wright and McAulay last year - which may or may not be down to management. And whilst I am reluctant to consider loanees in an analysis of a squad's strengths (though we've become so dependent upon them that I suppose we must) you've neglected to mention a Mr. Dos Santos in your comparison to Jim's choice of striking options. The forward line was better with him in it than anything we have at our disposal now - I'd have picked him over Murphy, Healy and Priskin combined any day of the week.

'We remain a piece of the jigsaw away from being a top 6 side, right now that piece is the bit in the player's heads. Under Jim we were missing half the puzzle. Thats progress.'

Do you actually believe what you're saying? That is astounding. So the missing piece doesn't arise from RK not being able to select a single XI he's happy with out of a squad now very largely comprised of his signings? Nor from the fact that we're hailing as saviours two loanees with abysmal scoring records in recent years? (I concede that Murphy's made a fantastic start at proving half of that concern unfounded, but Healy certainly hasn't.) You actually think a collective mindset is what's keeping us in a relegation fight?

I am not calling for RK's head, but neither do I have much faith in him; I couldn't even propose a solution, because whilst I think he's had long enough to justify his fee, it wouldn't help matters to replace him now, and no decent candidates really make themselves obvious.

But I wish these die-hard RK fans would grow up, take off the rose-tinteds, and concede that we are simply NOT any further forward than we were last season. We didn't finish 9th by being as crap all year as you're making out we were, neither by getting roundly beaten by the bottom side (twice.) And you don't improve upon finishing 9th by narrowly escaping relegation (or worse) with a different set of players. We have some good players now - we had some good players then. Dodgy manager then - dodgy manager now.

Join me in cheering the lads come what may, but blind unquestioning faith might leave you looking a bit silly at this rate.

I'm finding it increasingly hilarious that the blind faith brigade on here continue to insist we were complete crap all last season, and that we're playing well enough this season to be out of trouble in a couple of wins' time. Maybe if nobody else played any games. Wake up. Teams playing well don't languish at the bottom, and a team playing crap all season wouldn't have finished 9th. And let's not forget, Keane got two more wins out of last season's inherited squad than the zero he's got out of the one he's built himself.

If he's building a squad for promotion, I think we can all agree that the current one isn't it - yet those of us who don't see the substantial and expensive steps backward Keane's taken us logically translating into an improvement on last season any time soon are just being negative?!

I don't want to see Keane go yet - there's no point any change being made before January. But please people, get your heads out of the clouds and admit that he's, at best, made a complete dog's arse of it so far.

Clegg: Money Still There for Signings

Plugging the defence was all we needed to do last season. For all the improvements players like Leadbitter give us this season, and all the multitude of goals we score away from home, it does diddly unless we start winning some games.

RK NOT out, it would solve nothing at this stage, let's all stop getting hysterical.

However, can I just confirm that we were all watching the same team last season? Because the one I saw wasn't 'rubbish,' nor was it 'nowhere close to promotion.' Yes we were inconsistent but we finished 9th for christ's sake, so please can we also cut out the equally emotional RK-worshipping and realise that being rock bottom at this stage does not yet resemble an improvement on previous years.

I await a roasting from both factions...

McAuley Told He Can Leave
at 23:11:25

Luke8644 you really talk some nonsense pal. Pressured too much by Jim? He was a 28-year-old centreback we signed for seven figures, it's not like he was some kid from the youth team thrust into the spotlight. As for the captaincy thing, with years of experience behind him (some of it international) and the captaincy of his previous team, he should have been up to the job.
That said, he played reasonably well in the back four last season - but given that the defence was what let us down, said back four was not up to scratch (D Wright excepted, but god knows where he's gone.) Let's hope RK has someone decent in mind...

Keane: Penalty Miss Crucial

dubblue - nail on the head, could not agree more. Never have I and never will I boo at a match, but we've been steadily declining in quality and entertainment for the last four years so I can't pretend I'm thrilled with how it's going. And now RK has pulled up the roots of a team that, whilst by no means automatic promotion standard, finished 9th last year - 9th, not 19th - and is failing to adequately replace them. I wonder at what point the 'true supporters' might acknowledge that RK is making a bit of a strange fist of it - bottom at Christmas? squad of 8 players? a stand torn down because a supporter in it looked at him funny?
