Town Spend Least in Premier League On Agents
at 16:37:56

A comically large amount of money. But Chelsea and Man City seem to have paid about 3 times more than anyone else. We know that Chelsea just love signing players but I thought City had a fairly stable squad (one of the reasons people cite for their substandard season) so how have they spent so much?

And Humphries is playing in League One. I hope he comes good for us, but you are being harsh on some and randomly generous on others.

LeeJames99 - are the "league 1" players you are talking about the ones that got us 2nd place in the Championship last season? Chaplin, for example, I think has looked perfectly decent when he's played this season. Certainly no worse than our "next phase" players as you call them.

If we get relegated - as seems likely sadly - we will need to be making big money on players to avoid financial trouble. That means selling Delap for one.

Cajuste is highly unlikely to stay if we are in the Championship.

I think it's a good point re:category one youth status. At the moment, any truly promising players can just be stolen from us for a fraction of their possible worth - as has happened several times. So there's little point throwing too much into it if it won't pay for itself.

But it is a sad state of affairs. We didn't even bring anyone through in League 1 - other than Humphries, who only played a tiny part.

Leejames99: your line-up has no central midfielders in it! Who's going to win the ball/pick up from the defenders/be in the middle of the pitch?

Bizarre. But at least there's only 1 League 1 player in there eh?.

Leejames99: OK I think the sarcasm in your posts has been missed.

Davis was at fault on Saturday but you can hardly absolve Godfrey of any responsibility either.

I think the fans calling for the League 1 players is because they identified that - last year particularly - they gelled very well as a team and were more than the sum of their parts. this year, our football isn't flowing. Partly that is because of the much higher skill level required and partly because trying to create a new team in the Premier league is very hard. Davis is a great player at the main part of his game - attacking. He sure has defensive flaws but in the past that hasn't been as big an issue. McKenna obviously feels that one outweighs the other.

I think a blended squad of "improved" new players and the old ones is what we need, and largely that's been happening. He hasn't played many from League 1 recently, despite what you state. e.g. starting 11 on Saturday had Davis in it. No-one else. So, not sure what point you are making there.

Ultimately, I think we've mostly done as well as expected. We've shipped more goals than I'd like, but we let loads in last year, so it's not really a great surprise and we were never going to score as many.

There have been a lot of close games and plenty we deserved more from. Saturday's result was MASSIVELY flattering to Spurs. It could/should have been level/us in front before the last two goals on chances created etc.

Leejames99: I'm not actually suire what point you ar emaking now. You keep going on about our League 1 players. Are you saying we should play them or that they are rubbish?

You now appear to be slagging off the fans calling for us to play the old squad and who are slagging off the new players. That's not entirely unreasonable. But you also appear to be slagging off McKenna. And that IS unreasonable.

Leejames99: was that a joke comment?

Ignoring the mental suggestion of the failed manager Gerrard, or the retired Rednapp, Walton is injured if nothing else! Shows how keenly you have been following us.

you sre not alone in McKenna bashing on here and it's painful. 2 years ago Southampton and Leicester were two divisions above us. Now we are above them, which, if nothing else, shows how hard it is in this division.

Any fan thinking we'd be mid-table this season was living in cloud cuckooland.

People bash McKenna for going on about fine margins. But he's completely correct. There have been at least 4 games this season where a small mistake/moment of brilliance etc stopped us winning/drawing. With those we'd be above Wolves. We do seem to be slipping now, but that was to be expected, as clubs have a chance to assess our game and counteract it (Luton got 20 points first half of last season and 6 in the second).

We've also had loads of injuries and have a thin squad.

McKenna: A Painful Game For Us, City Were Too Strong in All Aspects
at 00:04:55

Blueboy1981:what a load of rubbish.

Two years ago we were in league one and the two teams currently below us were established Premier league clubs.

Recent performances that you mention include a win against Chelsea and a draw at Fulham that was close to a win.

Even Chris Sutton has admitted how impressed he's been with us this season, how we've competed in the majority of games.

You have such an unrealistic view of us it's laughable.

Ashton: In My Mind I Couldn't Picture Kieran Anywhere Else
at 13:51:15

Wow, that first comment is quite special in how apalling it is!

If other companies came to you and offered you a job are you saying you'd just say no and stay with your current employer without talking to them or seeing what they had to offer? I very much doubt it.

To call it disloyal is pathetic. Firstly, he has no ties to us as a club or town, he owes us nothing considering he's already repaid our gamble on him by getting us from league 1 into the premier league and, finally, he chose to stay here.

The fact he talked to them and still decided to stay with us is surely an even better sign than if he hadn't talked to them.

Philogene 'Set to Rejoin Villa'
at 16:01:59

That sell on/buy back clause seemed borderline illegal the way Villa could use it to up the selling price if they wanted and then get a share of the sale.

Shame if this doesn;'t happen, but got to say that's terrible business for Villa as they essentially sent someone out on loan to get experience but paid £8m to do so (£18m - £5m they sold him for plus £5 sell on fee they don't have to pay)

McKenna: After the Seasons We've Had There Was Always Going to Be Speculation
at 09:58:46

I appreciate he was being cagey and isn't going to answer a question like that at an awards ceremony but his wording did make me worry. The fact he's talking about how well the club is set up for the future implies that it'll be fine without him.

We knew he wouldn't stay for long, but I hoped he'd at least give us a season in the Prem - hopefully he still will. There's no reason we can't compete with the likes of Brighton in a year or two if we can stay up, and our best chance of that is with him in charge.

I'd lose a lot of respect for him if he went to Chelsea to be honest. They're a mess, and he's likely to get sacked within a year just because of their idiot owner.

And I'd have thought he wouldn't want to rush into the Man Utd job.

Personally, I preferred his second.

Some cracking goals in that video though. WIndass's is much better than it looks at first viewing aas he hits it first time whilst running across the ball. Nice back-heel to him too.

McKenna: We're Going to Assess One or Two in the Morning
at 15:58:45

terryf: don't agree about Hladky and playing out from the back at all. He's generally very measured and calm about it. It's pretty much the reason he's in the team I'd say as Walton is better at shot stopping in general.

Agree completely asbout his insistence on punching out. Drives me mad. It's almost always the wrong decision! But generally I think he's done a great job for us this year.

I can't see him bringing Walton in when he hasn't played in the league at all this season. I thiink he's a better shot stopper than Hladky but he isn't used to playing out from the back much at all, whcih would be a big risk.

Not sure about Ali either really. The tiredness and injury issues are generally on the wings (defence and midfield).
