A tap in maybe but watch the clip and after he lays the ball out wide, he anticipates the play and attacks the six yard box really well. The last few years have not seen many Ipswich midfielders getting in the box like that.
Good argument for Donacien (clean sheet and two assists) getting in that line-up at right-back ahead of Hamilton (left back who did score + conceded two goals)
Great away support. Second half was nervy/gritty - we gave the ball away too cheaply as MK applied pressure. Plenty of room for improvement so I'll take that result!
I argued financial prudence in previous comments on the sell-on fee news stories and got jumped on for it. Now those same people are hearing it straight from Evans himself perhaps they'll accept that aiming for a sustainable financial model is the only way to run a football club outside the Premiership.
Surely financial prudence is worth it when the alternative is potentially losing the club altogether? We've been in administration before after spending money we didn't have or couldn't sustain. Sure, it'd be lovely to throw money around and gamble on a quick return to th league above but until we're in a position where we're anywhere close to breaking even, that isn't realistic. It's obvious everyone's frustrated, including Lambert, but I don't really see what the alternative is at the moment. The hope has to be that we get players back from injury, the youngsters kick on, the academy keeps producing and we have a clearer picture in January.
The free agents aspect is an interesting one. As far as I know, a free agent could still be signed at any point during the season (as long as they were released by their club before the end of the transfer window). I presume the EFL have tried to restrict this via squad registration. i.e. would have to be registered by 5pm on deadline day. By that token, a club would presumably be able to sign a free agent after today but they wouldn't be able to play until the next registration opportunity arises. Would be interesting to see what the outcome would be if a player were to contest this as e.g. restriction of trade.
Have to also support the opportunity to give these youngsters experience. This is our best crop of youngsters for over a decade - several have played for their countries at youth level and even the full national teams in the case of Celina and Patterson. Shame Dozzell won't be there.
Never worth reading too much into squad numbers in my opinion. I'm sure if Bart really wanted 1 he would have it. It's a smaller squad but certainly greater quality than last season. At least most of the business has been done early this time and one or two late arrivals to fill the obvious requirements will be a bonus.
Very interesting article, especially the thoughts on the young players looking to break through. Definitely an important season for Dozzell. I'm hoping we play a system that will allow him to play in the first team and develop. His mature performances for England this summer would indicate he is currently best suited to playing in a deeper midfield two with an AMC in front. We possibly now have the players to facilitate that.
Suffolk_n_Good - I imagine we all care on here. There aren't many who bother to post about the country's 34th best football team (on current standings) on this remote message board in the vast vacuum of the internet? :-)
What alternatives are you proposing? I would say that Evans has put in proper investment. Looking at the accounts, he's put in far more than has been taken out. How much more can he put in without reward or sustainability? If he goes, who would want to put in more?
How many football clubs do we need to see go under before people drop the 'splash the cash' demands and stop equating 'showing some ambition' with spending lots of money? Ipswich were in administration as recently as 2003. We spent massively in the early ME days with nothing to show for it. We can't afford to be a big spending club - we don't have the turnover to support it. No business can justify spending money it doesn't have or won't recoup. And why would you call for ME to go at the moment? Who is going to come in and shoulder the debt this club has? How many other owners would have enough of a long term view to invest heavily in the academy? I also still think McCarthy is doing the best job he can with the budget everyone at the club has to operate within. In these past 10-15 years, it's important to remember that we still have a football club. I think some people would improve their starting point in the argument by accepting that this is our level at the moment because I think the alternatives are far worse.
