Loach Could Look to Move On
at 09:19:06

My cousin, who is a long term Watford season ticket holder was amazed when we got Loach. He described him as a good reaction shot stopper, but very poor with crosses and often gets caught out by long distance shots. We have seen exactly these faults - he has not improved his game at all since signing for us and we should look to replace him.

Those Were The Days... Or Were They?
at 20:55:24

Atmosphere has largely changed due to all sitting stadium and the fact as mentioned above that few of the players stay for more than about three years. Small point - pretty sure that Johny Miller was playing in the Youth team before we ever signed Steve Stacey.

Those Were The Days... Or Were They?

Congratulations on a very well researched and lucid blog. The great problem for ITFC is to get back those supporters who got totally disillusioned during the Keane era and stopped attending. There are probably 5000 to 10000 floating supporters who would return if the current team is successful. It has always been a factor at Portman Road that success breeds crowds (see other successful times). The great problem for the current management is how to do a Reading / Norwich and achieve success without spending money. (Answers on a postcard to Mr P Jewell!!)

Jewell: Some Positives to Be Taken From Season
at 18:30:19

There is a report in the Times today that in the top division in England since 1975 the most successful sides have been those with the biggest wage bill except on the odd occasions where exceptional managers (Robson / Wenger , Ferguson /Dalgliesh) have bucked the trend. As we are going down a route of keeping down the wage bill it seems unlikely that Jewell will be successful as he is not an exceptional manager. We are probably going to have to get used to "mid-table mediocrity" or at best the odd sniff at the play-offs!

Jewell: Some Positives to Be Taken From Season

Like the blog and tend to agree with the sentiments - but like billblue I have supported Town for over 50 years. When I watch Premier League games on Sky I often wonder if we really want to be back there; nearly all the sides are full of foreign mercenaries and the smaller clubs are hugely in debt ( eg Bolton £110m ). The Evans period has been disastrous, but so were the last few Sheepshanks years and the end of the Cobbold time when we had to sell most of the Robson team. The Norwich experiment is interesting - young manager / lower league players - bet it won't keep them in Premier for longer than two years without spending bigger sums of money on better/ more expensive players.

The "Ipswich Way" was always a ridiculous tag from newspapers which centered around the Cobbolds management style. On the field we have always, when successful, had our share of hard enforcers think of Nelson/Baxter/Elseworthy - Jefferson/Morris - Hunter/Beattie/Mariner. Our present side has a soft centre and badly needs some bite in midfield.

The system of Eric Gates playing just behind the two strikers was developed in the youth team by Bobby Ferguson and carried on through reserves and first team.

If you think back to our most successful period under Bobby Robson we had a regular supply of players coming through the youth system and playing "the Ipswich way". Our best side had seven players who were in the youth sides : Burley; Mills; Osman ; Butcher ; Wark ; Gates and Brazil. Robson's autobiography was called "Time on the grass" and last week on Radio Suffolk Bobby Ferguson spoke about the Ipswich system of training players to play in a similar fashion at all ages and levels - we probably were ahead of Barcelona by 15 years!. It is possible that Robson started that system during his time in Barcelona? Unfortunately the building of the Pioneer stand spelt the end of all that good work and near bankruptcy ruined the club. We have never really recovered.

Town Topic: The Greatest Town Goals
at 18:31:03

Although it was against us; Alan Hinton's shot from 40 yards for Nottingham Forest in 1963/4 (I think) season. He was on the left wing and it went straight into the far top corner - Churchmans end , and this was with the old heavy footballs.
Also the second goal ,from Ray Crawford, when we beat Villa in 1962 to win the League - greatest moment in our history.

McParland: The Players Sweated Blood
at 10:02:18

Away goals do count double in the event of a draw. Then extra time and penalties. At last the tactics were right - most of our wins have been with a defensive midfielder ; did'nt ever think it would be Kennedy. Charlie M - where have you been for the last three months? Probably Delaneys best ever game for the Town.

Agree with your blog. Don't think he will walk as it would finish any future managerial career he may have - nobody would employ a "double quitter". With ME probably limiting future spending it is important to get a Manager with knowledge of the lower divisions , as that is where we need to recruit players from. I think Curbishley has been out of the scene for too long. Like the look of Sean O'Driscoll and his style of play and Eddie Howe is doing a great job with limited money ; plus these type of managers are still "hungry " for success. My heart says it would be nice to see Tarricco back with his mate Poyet.

McParland: The Players Sweated Blood
at 14:40:44

Statistically Jackie Milburn was the poorest (to date), however as someone who saw all the home games that season it was a lot more fun watching Town then than now - the football was at least entertaining!. Milburn was also left by Sir Alf with a team of old men with no Reserves worth bringing through. He had virtually no money to spend and did bring in a few players who served us well into McGarry's era. One of Keane's biggest failings has been an inability to purchase the right set of players to form a team - too many runners / tacklers and not enough skill in midfield. Whilst I have never supported Keane, I do wonder about the help he gets from our scouting system ,as for several years now we have failed to find lower league players to bring through, which was one of our strengths in the past . I also think that sacking Klug was a major mistake. By the way Cherryhintonblue keep producing your statistical blogs - very interesting reading.

A Fine Tribute to Town\'s Greatest Year
at 17:49:54

So many great matches to remember in that season, and one of the notable things about that team was that Burley ;Mills; Osman ; Butcher; Wark ; Gates and Brazil all came throught the Youth Teams. We are probably one of only four post war teams to get such a collection of young talent playing together (the others Leeds / Man Utd. / West Ham). So even if we can't match the big spenders we still have the opportunity to build a team by developing young talent. It just takes patience and the right management / scouting system.

Swansea Linked With Priskin Move
at 18:27:40

My cousin is a Watford season ticket holder & he says Priskin only started to play in the last six months before his contract wasup. Before that he was just like we've seen him - uninterested. The Watford fans thought it was hilarious us paying so much for him - doubt he'll go for more than £400k.

Keane Second On Manager Rich List
at 09:38:58

Well said homer 123. Even our "friends" up the A140 have managed to keep their support together by having a sensible attitude to their fans & keeping them on board during the bad times. If only we could have a nearly full house every week.

Speculation on Keane\'s Future Grows
at 10:12:45

Change would be good, but Curbishley has not worked for a year & is mid fifties - would he still have the drive to almost start again. Same could be said for George Burley. Don't fancy Mowbray ; he failed as defence coach here & has been uninspiring at Celtic - however he would bring more fluid football than we have seen for the last three years.

Keane: First Goal Crucial
at 16:59:29

We all left early ; in the car home no one spoke. We've all watched the Town for over 50 years & we have seen many dire performances over those years , but talking this morning we all agreed this was one of the worst & we've had enough. Four old men who are not renewing for next year; hopefully enough people won't & ME will have to get rid of him. No guts ; no pace ; no guile - just a team of one paced runners. felt sorry for O'Conner as he looks like a good prospect & at least he tried. What sort of a scouting system do we have that over the last couple of years has brought us Stead ; Priskin; Martin; Healey (x2); Edwards;Balkenstein & Norris for a lot of money - not a footballer amongst them.
