 | Forum Reply | I really hope we have got it right with Philogene at 14:45 9 Apr 2025
I think 'a bit muddled' is being kind to be honest, as others have posted the list of players we have for the LW position is ridiculous, particularly when you consider how lightweight we seem in CM and probably another CF. I know particularly in January you have to go with who is available to a certain extent, but I think it is very hard to argue that those behind the scenes (Ashton and the scouting team/data analysis) have had a good season. I would say the one positive in how badly this season has gone is we know now, 4 months before the start of the Championship season, what league we will be in next year, meaning we have time to make decisions about who stays. Conversations can be had with players openly about their future, and we can plan our recruitment without the ambiguity of what league we will be playing in. |
 | Forum Reply | Brandon Williams interview with Ben Foster at 23:16 3 Apr 2025
I was a little surprised that in the interview he said that when he started to have some issues again off the pitch towards the end of 2023 we sent him back to Manchester to sort himself out, and come back when he was ready. I know we only had him on loan, and I am sure there is more to the situation, but it seems from the outside that sending him back into the environment he was struggling in before (sounds like issues with friends and family in the area) was never going to help things, and he says how things did get worse when he returned to Manchester. I am not being critical of the decision as for the playing group it seems it was the right call, our unity as a team was absolutely key for getting promoted and eliminating a possible distraction was probably the right decision, but for Brandon himself I don't feel like that can have helped his situation. |

The thing I don't understand is didn't a lot of manufacturing move out of the US (and other western countries) due to the significantly cheaper labour elsewhere? Given that this hasn't changed, even if some manufacturing did return to the US wouldn't the increased labour costs still mean that products are going to be more expensive? |

It's just about being open to the idea that people might change or reveal something about themselves which changes your view of them. I am not someone who militantly argues against anyone who holds a slightly different world view to me, I agree with your point that you can hold a contrary view on an issue such as Trans rights without it automatically being Transphobic, and I agree when Peterson focused far more on the free speech element of things rather than Trans people I wouldn't necessarily have described him as Transphobic, but that isn't what he does anymore. Just from a quick google these are a couple of things he has said in the last couple of years on the Trans issue: He described gender affirming care as: "The worst atrocities of the 20th century—this is medical malpractice on a massive scale." and stood by this assertion when pressed on whether he included Nazi medical experiments in his consideration He dehumanises Trans people, claiming it is all a conspiracy, and portrays trans people as a threat rather than as individuals: "The trans movement is not about compassion or rights. It’s a weaponized ideology aimed at destroying the foundations of Western civilization." |

So judging someone based on the views they hold is 'liberal'? I prefaced my post by saying 'if you have listened to anything he has said in the last 5 years', because as others have said, his rhetoric has changed a lot in recent years. The Cathy Newman interview was 7 years ago, the majority of free speech stuff with Trudeau was further back than that I believe. I didn't necessarily agree with anything he was saying then, but I can see how he was seen as a voice in the debates that deserved to be listened to, you just can't say that for pretty much anything he has said recently. I know you apparently stopped reading this thread after 7 words, but if you had read what Dan copied in, his comments on enforced monogamy, and still choose to defend him then yes I would stand by my suggestion that your posts are quite revealing. |

If you have listened to anything he has said in the past 5 years and still stand by what you have said here that is quite a revealing post; I don't really see how anyone could listen to any of the angry, culture-war baiting, woman hating stuff he has come out with recently and agree with any of it unless you are yourself aligned with that way of thinking. |

Incel culture is not just the belief that men have a right to demand sex from women, that is the extreme end of it, but it is also just the belief amongst certain young men that women, feminism, or society in general are to blame for their lack of 'success', however they may define it. Peterson repeatedly asserts that modern feminism and social progress have left men behind, pushing the belief that society favours women at men’s expense which is core to the incel culture. |

That may have been his message originally, I don't really know, but as others have said he is as bad as any of them lot now, the majority of his content/interviews now focus on attacking what he deems 'woke culture', attacking feminists, trans people, denying climate change. He uses big words and sounds intellectual, but is pretty much spreading hate and lies every time he opens his mouth, all of it pretty much aimed at angry young men/boys. [Post edited 1 Apr 11:09]

The example of Costa is a good one for the type of company that I think it would be relatively easy to rework tax law so that they do pay a fair amount of tax based on their profits, largely because the vast majority of their profits come from sales in UK based coffee shops. They couldn't just move manufacturing/offices elsewhere like a lot of big companies that don't rely on a physical presence in the UK, companies like this would be an easy starting place to tighten tax loopholes without the risk of driving business/jobs overseas (at least in my opinion, I have no real knowledge on the subject though so I may be wrong). |

It is really strange, I saw that on the BBC news website and assumed it was a piece about the concerns around the safety of the conviction, and the rejection of a retrial, but then found it to be just presenting as fact many of the things that are now being widely questioned. I have no idea whether she is guilty or not, but it seems more and more like it needs to be looked at again given the questions raised about the original trial. I don't think it is some sort of conspiracy or anything like that, but from some of what I have read it does seem as though it was a neonatal unit that was struggling, and perhaps thinking one person was responsible for all that was going wrong on the unit was more palatable than more widespread issues with the quality of care. I think I read that a letter put forward by 14 experts who reviewed the medical evidence concluded that there is no medical evidence she murdered or harmed any of the babies, and that the newborns suffered from poor medical care or natural causes. Also some of the methods used by the prosecution seemed really questionable, I believe they presented a graph which they stated showed all the deaths/incidents on the unit over the time in question, and how they all lined up with Letby's shifts, however it turned out they had only plotted the deaths/incidents when she was on shift, and had omitted a number of others that didn't fit their argument. It does make you wonder what happened in the summer, I assume Palmer would have been available for a similar amount then? I know every decision is easy with hindsight, but how did we decide to pay 5x more (and probably more in wage) for Muric then, only to make this transfer now? |
 | Forum Reply | Far too many individual players had poor games yesterday at 10:03 2 Feb 2025
I always think that is harsh blaming the defenders not following up in those situations. There's a reason it happens all the time (even with really high level defenders), and that is the defender has to be prepared to cover any range of eventualities following a shot, if they reacted as a striker can and sprint in on the off chance that the keeper pats it straight out into the 6 yard box, then they are out of position if the ball actually gets knocked out to say the edge of the box, or to a player out wide who can then whip a ball across to a space where the CB's are not covering. It wasn't a howler, but the only player you can pin blame on for that goal is Muric, the striker is always going to be gambling on the ball in a way a defender won't (that is after the initial shot I mean, obviously we could have dealt with it better before that point). | Forum Reply | McKenna's gut feeling at 16:22 31 Jan 2025
This thread is this forum in a microcosm. Someone shares a thought or opinion that isn't particularly outrageous, some may agree, some may have a different opinion, a good post you would think for a forum where fans discuss their views on topics relating to the club, but instead it just turns into a few posters sniping at each other and any posts about the actual topic just get lost in the melee. |
 | Forum Reply | McKenna's gut feeling at 14:20 31 Jan 2025
I don't know if it would be that much of an issue if we don't sign another CF, it's obvious we can't improve on Delap, and we will always play one central striker, so the signing would be a backup, I'm happy with Hirst being that rotation option, and as we now have so much depth in the positions off the striker we do have the option to use Szmodics or Encisco up front (I think earlier in the season we would have used Szmodics in rotation with Delap when Hirst was out, but the issue was it weakened us a lot to move Szmodics off the left, that wouldn't be the case now). I think if the right player became available then another high quality CM would make more of a difference to us than another CF |

I feel like there is certainly an approach being taken that hopes to replicate what the likes of Brighton and Brentford have done, make smart transfers for players that will improve the squad, but also will increase in value, so that their sale can fund the next round of smart signings. The issue I have is that we do not seem to have the scouting/data analysis in place to go outside of English football for these signings (as the clubs mentioned above do), meaning the margin for error is far narrower. I would have to say that right now the only player we signed this year that we could definitely sell for a profit is Delap, I don't think we could be confident we would get our money back on Hutch, Clarke, Greaves, Philogene, O'Shea. I am not writing these players off or anything, despite some not so great performances recently I think Hutch will go on to show he is more than worth what we paid for him, O'Shea has really come on, and it's way too early to judge with Philogene; I am just pointing out as we are only shopping in England, we are already paying quite inflated fees, so they really have to perform to ensure we would make the profit on them that I think the owners are hoping for when they move on. | Forum Reply | Which player from the League One team will you be most gutted to see leave? at 14:45 24 Jan 2025
Does anyone else find it raising rather existential questions as the team progresses this year? Like what is it all for? The last two years were amazing, and they were amazing because of the success, failure to get promoted either year would obviously have made those seasons ultimately less incredible in the moment. But then you form this attachment to the players that got us here, and even though I know we can't survive in the premier league without pretty much upgrading every player that got us here, I still don't want us to. Ultimately leading to the question, what is the point of the success if you are going to enjoy it less than the journey, and if you feel less attached and connected to the team as a result? I know that logically as new players arrive and we have success on the pitch, that connection will form again, and new memories will be made, but I don't know, that group that we had the last 2+ years does feel a bit special, I'm not sure if it will be replicated. |
 | Forum Reply | What will Philogene bring to us at 16:00 9 Jan 2025
He plays predominantly off the left doesn't he? It does feel like we are a bit over stocked on that side if this goes through; Philogene, Szmodics, Clarke, and Broadhead. Interesting that we will have spent around 45 million combined for the 3 in that position that arrived this year. I definitely think Philogene is an excellent signing, I just wonder how we will make it work with that many options in one position. I wonder if there is any chance of letting Jack Clarke go out on loan? Seems odd to think given the fee we paid, but I don't see him getting game time, I would say he is 4th choice of the names mentioned above given how good Broadhead has looked in the last couple of games. I don't blame Davis, he won the ball and drove forward, and it was his run that created the space for the shot, it was the other side that makes less sense, I think we had 4 or 5 players out of position ahead of the ball when they countered, I didn't see who it was and haven't seen it back, but whoever it was I think they should have realised with Davis that far up at least one to two of them needed to hold back in case we turned it over. |
 | Forum Reply | Another lead spurned at 16:01 5 Jan 2025
There were like 6 minutes to go still then weren't there? I think given if that shot was a few cm to the right we are 3-1 up and the games over it was fair to have a go, the lack of urgency to cover when they countered was more concerning, I mean Davis was clearly spent, but someone surely should have seen the gap and busted a gut to get over there, or just commit a tactical foul, we just didn't seem to respond to the obvious danger quick enough. |
