If Dino MM was still here with the resources McKenna has enjoyed, believe me he would still be pushing a brand of football stuck in a different era. He's been left behind and I find it incredible that anybody still gives him a job! It's in his DNA. People think he didn't have decent players when he was here. It wasn't that, it was the way he tried to play. He played his mate Chambers every game over Webster who goes onto to play in the PL. Says it all! |

I've never understood the sentimentality from some around his reign!
An absolute dinosaur who continued to play his favourites in spite of ability or form (Chambers the glaring worst case). There were also a number of players he ignored before going on to prove their worth elsewhere (Webster for example). Stayed for far too long.

Totally agree with those who say he should've gone 2 or 3 seasons ago and again, the fact he thought he should stay is part of our problem. Look where we've just finished in league 1!! We need to improve and that means getting better players everywhere.
Maybe only when we've got a winning team and a decent captain that can actually play will we look back on this period differently. I'm not interested in players being “decent blokes” and constantly doing a PR job with the press telling us how much they care about the club. We should expect that anyway from any captain of itfc. |

Passion, enthusiasm and heart only get you so far I'm afraid! Chambers may have had this in spades but frankly I'd expect that of any player and certainly captain of my team. In terms of ability possibly one of the most limited players we've had that has played week in week out in spite of performance.
No doubt not a universally popular opinion but his longevity has been part of the problem of our stagnating when passion had appeared to trump ability. |

I'm staggered by this!
I'm surprised at PL actually. MM would have played him in goal such was his undying, blinkered view of this non footballer! PS was too scared to leave him out despite threatening to but I thought more of PL. what is it about this guy? He's absolutely everything that is wrong with this team and I'm so sick of hearing people bang on about how much he cares for the club and then acknowledge that he's a liability. Football wise he has to be in the top 5 of worse players to don the shirt in recent years. MM continuing to “shoe horn” him into the team at RB when he can't run or pass actually unwittingly began this nonsense about him doing anything for the team and encouraging this view of him being a legend.

I just love the way that even those fans that love chambers acknowledge that actually he's not that good!!
To be championship contenders you need players that are wholehearted, passionate, put their bodies on the line etc etc AND are actually decent, talented footballers aswell.
I'm afraid passion only gets you so far!

Finally some long overdue good news!
Frankly can't believe some people are being so kind here - treated fans with contempt at times and his negative tactics were awful. Also, is undying loyalty to some players meant we rarely saw our potentially best team being played.
He wouldn't have lasted anywhere near as long at most clubs!
Hope for a progressive, forwarding thinking manager who wants to play football as it should be played and in the best itfc tradition.
I do hope it means we'll end the season with a feeling of positivity in readiness for next season.
Now he's got nothing to lose I bet he'll suddenly play more expansive football though.

Another indication of the direction MM will be taking us next season.
Pitman has more skill and awareness than the likes of Samuel and Moore will ever have. I saw Pitman trudge off at the end of the Shef Wed game having been overlooked while those two proved totally ineffective and felt genuinely sorry for him. |

This is a backward step and in keeping with the present problems with the club.
Not giving him a new contract would surely have signalled a change of direction and philosophy. The best teams I've seen at PR this season, (particularly Fulham for example) all had defenders that are completely comfortable on the ball and are happy to play their way out of trouble as opposed to our persistence of "booting" the ball away in the hope that it falls to one of our players.
Since when has being a "top bloke" and "good in the changing room " been so important in modern day football? It is surely possible to be both of those things AND good at football as well!
If Webster is fit and chambers plays at RB then this really is the end of any hope we might have next season.
