[Blog] Delaney, Healy, Martin and Co
Written by superblueflude on Thursday, 22nd Oct 2009 12:53

I've written pieces about Roy Keane and how good strong support can help our team get back to winning ways. But I thought I'd ask for supporters' comments on some of Keane's signings.

Wise move of mine? Probably not, however you may feel differently about some of the signings and admit that although some may have not turned out how you expected, the blame shouldn't really be aimed at the manager.

Starting off, how many of you have gone shopping, seen a a product on the shelf, you've picked it up, gave it a good look and read the back of the packaging to see what it does. You buy it, take it home and then you're shocked at how bad the product actually is. The same for food, how many take aways do you buy that end up being thrown away?

Think of this and now think of Delaney, Healy and Martin. To us their performances have been, well let's just say not that great, to be polite. But surely Keane must have seen something in these players to bring them to our club.

With that in mind, instead of thinking Keane made a big mistake signing them, how about thinking, maybe they are not as good as first thought. How many players all over the world are bought and sold, and then suddenly these very players are labelled as mistakes, but whose mistake?

I can't believe that each time a player is bought, the manager has to take the blame. Surely the player themselves has to take the blame.

The problem is we can't just send Delaney or Healy back like we can with shop products with a receipt, but what we can do is use them to our benefits, making sure the first teamers understand that although these two are not in the first team at present, big changes can happen and this can keep the team on their toes.

Look at Leadbitter, Edwards and Rosenior, three fantastic players who are beginning to show their worth, players Keane has also brought in. So, come on Delaney, Healy and Martin, how about showing the fans why we bought you and not let Keane take the rap.

Exactly what I've been thinking totally agree I back keane and think he will turn it around but some of his signings look poor and why he keeps playing peters beggers belief especially with Quinn not in the team I feel he offers much more than peters who I feel is lightweight put Quinn in and give the midfield more bight !! Come on keano!!

But keane's job is to watch these players and to make sure they are as good as they are first thought. You cant blame the player if they are signed for a club which is of a higher standard than they can play at.

I think Martin has been a poor signing so far, he doesnt take players on enough for my liking he has certainly got the ability but doesnt show it enough, but i guess he has been in and out of the team, leadbitter has been the best signing by miles looks comfortable already in centre mid get norris back and we have a very good pairing there!! Delaney has also been a nitemare heard he was at fault for 2 goals in the reserves shocking signing.

COYB 3 points on saturday i can feel it!!!

let´s look at the packaging for these three players though, shall we?

Delaney - had never played at any level higher than the championship in 9 years as a professional. QPR thought he was mediocre and only fancied him enough to keep him for one season.

Healy - Went back to the Irish league after failing to make the grade at both Sunderland and Barnsley.

Martin - reportedly underwhelming in all 6 of his previous loan assignments.

I reckon there might be an excuse for Martin. But the other two!?

Healey was brought to give struggling cork city some cash, that can be the only reason we signing him

Re super blues 9 - baffling comment about Trotter. We have dominated the midfield and you want to rubbish your midfield ball winner. He kept possession and kept the ball moving swiftly. the Ipswich 'way' used to be to support young (and local) players rather than trying to destroy them. He has had far more impact than most of the expensive imports this season. Keane doesn't need much of an excuse to drop someone.
The major problem first half on tuesday was Martin who lost possession every time - no wonder Keane took him off.
Would love to see Garvan being given a chance.

Im sorry i cant agree these players were not regulars in the side, so Keaneo could not see them in first team football, therefore for that reson alone a manger is taking a risk and if he is taking a risk then, critisim is deserved. Martin was a flop at Forrest and Plymouth, so he hardly had pedigree, Delaney had long since lost form and was not a regular at qpr, and the healy situation is a joke.
Keane has done well with the others but if it were not for the signing of rosenior i would have lost all faith in his transfer knowledge, rosenior represents his only success in the market to me, a player he had not had personel contact before in his time. If Keneo stays away from his past we should be ok in the transfer market from now on.

What's wrong with Martin? I thought he looked class at the start.
(Haven't been to a game since early Sept.)

Ok so can i ask, if say, we all agree Delaney, Healey and Marting were mistakes - and they could be all managers make mistakes, then why people continuously say Keane hasn't got a clue when it comes to transfers? Edwards - class, Leadbitter class, rosenior - class, our new goaly - solid.
And in regards to Trotter - reminds me of matty Holland, does his job - think about Leadbitter, he can move where he likes as he knows Trotters behind him - if you play Garvan and Leadbitter together it will be a gerrard Lampard combination of a few years back - wouldnt work.

Healey was a charity buy. A good signing in the sense that it helped Cork City. Poor player though. Delaney looks poor. I dont get what Martin's contribution is. I have seen Priskin start to do well in a couple games at Sheff Utd and Barnsley and have confidence he will come good.

Fact is that good players rarely need time to settle in and stamp their mark on the team. Look at Leadbitter, Edwards and Rosenior. They have all done well instantly. Martin and Priskin are young and may come good but Healey and Delaney are old journeymen who will never improve as much as a young player. It begs the question, why not just accept the loss on those two?

Of course the manager should take the blame for bad signings as he takes the plaudits for good signings , if any lower league player or player is offered a better deal or better club then he is going to accept it whether they think they are good enough or not . The real issue is why Keane tried Delaney so many times before picking Wright , or his reluctance to try certain players Priskin,Stead,Garvan,Quinn whilst others are not performing week in week out ?

Spot on!

Veron, Taibi, Djemba Djemba, Jordi Kruyf- Does this mean ferguson is a crap manager?
Frances Jeffers, Richard Wright etc. - Arsene must be crap too.

You can spend more than a player warrents based on past performances for other teams but it is only when they arrive and train that you can accept that you have made a mistake. At least Keane is willing to take responsibility for his signings.

On Tuesday night, by far the best player on the pitch was Jon Walters. Put him aside and you will not find anyone who put in more of a performance than Leadbitter, Rosenior and Edwards. All signed by Keane!! As fans we are still not used to being in a position of financial security and can afford to make mistakes signing crap! It's not our money paying them therefore let Marcus Evans worry about if that money is being watsted. As long as the players in the team perform like they did this week, I have faith that we now have enough quality to climb the not-so-steep championship ladder very quickly.

Pimsoclock - Thank you - im glad someone agrees.
If we sort ourselves out and finish respectively this year - no ones going to be bothered about Delaney, Healy, Martin - worry about the first team.

Pablos - you are right, we need to forget those two and move one - including Rhodes! - we didn't see him train, we don't know him like the manager does, maybe just maybe Rhodes was to big for his boots? possible?

I've made some mistakes on football manager before but i still won the Champions League with AFC Wimbledon.

In Keano we trust!

Rhodes is a bit of an odd situation. I doubt he was too big for his boots but yes, lets just be supportive of what we have. You know? Support? Seems like a good idea as supporters

We need to move on from this Rhodes thing - look at Gary cahill - Villa fans have forgotten! Cattermole etc!.

Cahill? Cattermole? Eh?

Ok heres a comment which should open up the room
noone has said that our previous managers in the last 10 years have been awful - so lets name players who have come in and to be polite were crap.
Starting off.
Le Pen?, Karic, Harewood (Loan at the time).
anymore people?

Surco72 added 13:58 - Oct 22
I agree the Rhodes thing should be long gone but would the Villa and Wigan fans be as happy if they were bottom of their league with no wins in 15 games ?

superblueflude added 13:59 - Oct 22
Pablo - i used those two as examples becasue they were sold, but the clubs that sold them arent sitting their cursing there manager over it.

sonian_blue added 14:04 - Oct 22
Judgement on Rhodes has to be put to one side until he succeeds at a higher level. Look at Billy Clarke, banging them in left right and centre 2 leagues down but couldnt hit a cows arse with a banjo for us.

I said my piece on another artical about Delaney. As for Colin Healey I haven't seen him play this season here is a video of him in a game last season for Cork City. He features a lot in the 3 minutes. I'm incline to agree with the Cork City survival buy!

Martins needs some muscle. He is rolled of the ball far to easily, otherwise he is skillfull and has great potental

Laim Trotter played a lot better on Tuesday but against Swansea he was pants and should have been subbed in the first half.
