[Blog] So Now What Do We Think of Keane?
Written by superblueflude on Tuesday, 3rd Nov 2009 11:56

So finally we have that long awaited win, yet there a still hundreds of fans out there still calling for Keane's head! Why?

OK so we're still bottom, we all knew that one win might not have done enough to move us up, however we were very unlucky to have both Reading and Plymouth winning on the same day. Anyway, what was so great about the win was the way we won ugly - look at the Watford game, we played beautifully then to have it snatched away.

For me this win will do something magical to the team, I feel the pressure will be much less, meaning more creative runs from defence, more urgency from the midfield and even the strikers may feel that they can make a risk with certain runs.

So, for all those people still calling for the manager to be sacked, take a reality check on our current situation, yes, bottom, but a win on Saturday and more than likely we will be out of the bottom three, then a win against Sheffield Wednesday will take us up another couple of places.

We are four games unbeaten, I think it's only two losses in 10 games as well. This is actually very very good, yes, wins would have been nice but still it's a good stat.

Our defence looks really solid, and although everyone keeps commenting on the one-man strike force from Derby, go back five or six games and I'm sure even then the defence would have struggled.

The midfield looks good, a bit of tweaking maybe and although I keep praising Trotter I can now accept that maybe he shouldn't start - that doesn't mean I'd bring Garvan back, who by the way looks terrible at the moment - certainly not banging on the first team door.

I'd play Quinner in that role or maybe even try Leadbitter there and push Edwards into the attacking midfield role, creating the opportunity for Walters to move out wide which we all know is his best position.

The biggest problem is the front two, I felt so angry with Stead, scoring two goals in reserves, scoring against Plymouth but then did nothing when he started. Could he be better coming off the bench I wonder? Maybe starting with Priskin and Couñago is the way to go, we will see.

Now the reason I'm mentioning all of the above is to ask, why do we still see fit to moan about Keane? He's doing well, creating a team worthy of climbing up the table.

Now Delaney's looking good at centre-back for me Martin and Healy are the only signings which make you moan, but apart from them all others have been great, so for me you can't slate Keane for that. I see a great future and a brilliant manager in Keane. What he did with David Wright was fantastic, for those that say Keane realised he made a mistake, I think you'll find he hadn't, he's brought Wright back in and he is fantastic, twice the player he was last year - granted he was always good but now he's excellent - for me that was Keane's work.

So to summarise, two losses 10 games, four games unbeaten, stronger side, confidence up, for me the future is looking better and for me this is all because of one man - Keane.

Why?

I think that many fans are still in the same groups as they were over Magilton. Those who wanted him out are prepared to support Keane and visa versa.

We are 13pts off the play-offs, it's time for the fickle-fans to SUPPORT Roy, the players and the owners.

Ipswich are bottom of the league...because of Keane. This blog is ridiculous. 'He's doing well'. He is not doing well. The signings have not been great.

Did Roy Keane write this? I don't want him sacked but there's only so much one sided rose tinted optimism that can be taken. To say 'now Delaney's looking good,' after one match against a one man attack lacks any credibily. Priskin, Martin, Delaney and Healey have yet to prove at any consistent level that they were worthwhile acquisitions. Frankly the section about David Wright beggars belief!! Leave him out for a while so inferior players at full back such as Delaney, Bruce, Smith and Peters all play just to supposedly raise his game a bit whilst the team coast along in bottom position was a major mistake. Let's get real here.

Ok, i've always said on my older posts that Delaney for me would make a decent CB and i've been proven right, thank you!.
Priskin will come good with time, i agree healey and martin are useless so i ignore them completely lol,

But seriously with a full season ahead do you not think that Keane knew what he was doing with Wright?! i certainly do, many high profile managers do excactly the same thing he did, and he's proven a masterstroke.
So come end of season - when we're top 6 all you haters will be eating hubble pie.

Lot's of assumptions here based on one win!

You ask 'What do we think of Keane now?' - well for me, pretty much the same as last Friday! I'm glad he's our manager, but he hasn't lived up to expectations yet. I need to see more upward progress and a real belief within the side before I'll think he's doing any better than the previous manager (who I did think had run his course and should go). I hope you're optimism is right - and signs are there that you might be; but for me it's too early to call and the questions and fears remain. One victory doesn't make a winter.

It was a massive relief to win on Saturday and we are now unbeaten in four, so let's hope this is the start of the recovery. I hope we improve, push up the table, and that Keane becomes a successful manager. At the moment, he has been awful, taking us the the lowest position I can ever remember as a fan.

Regarding the signings, Delaney did okay on Saturday but he has looked nowhere near an £800k player for me. Priskin cost a whopping £1.7m and has scored one goal, so cannot be considered a success (yet, I hope he will come good). I would also like to see a bit more from Edwards to be honest, as he cost around £1m which is a lot for a player his age. I would rather have seen money spent on a dominant centre-back and a goalscoring striker.

Sorry but you have not been proven right re Delaney - he needs to impress over a number of games against half decent opposition for you to prove your theory. As for Wright i do not agree. He left out someone who had a very good season the ear before for no apparent reason and was lucky that Wright has such a good attitude that when Keane finally saw sense he has returned as good as ever.

Good blog, and well summarised, superblueflude. For me, Keano was a surprise replacement for Magilton (I honestly expected Curbishley), but I support him partly because he is still new and rebuilding, and partly because I can see signs of improvement (your example of David Wright is one that I totally agree with, and mentioned yesterday somewhere!)

I admit that progress has been slower than I expected and this is disappointing. However, I absolutely believe that progress is being made, and to pull the plug on Keano now would be suicidal and a massive backwards step. I am not a blindly optimistic Keane fan as some would believe, but I think we are heading in the right direction under his leadership, and the squad will be fitter, stronger, and hungrier in the coming weeks and months. I think what we are seeing is the players starting to react and adapt to a far harsher training and discipline regime than before, and the weak ones will fall. Thankfully the stronger players are now starting to come forward and really show themselves (take a bow David Wright) maybe to be followed by Garvan when he gets his act together?)

Its maybe more EVOLUTION than REVOLUTION at Ipswich Town FC at the moment.

Keep the faith and keep on believing .....

KEANO!!!

Reuserfree - your theory on Wright - wheres your proof on that please, you say he dropped him for no apparant reasn - do you not think there was a reason?!
we don;t know what goes on in a football club, all we see is what happens on the pitch - thats why i've actually been impressed with Keane yeah at the moment we're not the in league position we want to be but i can see the improvements hes making, on and off the field.

Common Guys, this is all about results ! The truth is Keane would never have considered this job unless he thought he had a good chance of making he's mark at Portman Road.Remember last season at Portman Road when he was unveiled, great expectations, great atmosphere.
Stick with him people,he will get us where we need to be, only it might take a little longer than everyone expected.
I predict play offs minimum with the final at Wembley....
Bring it on !!!!!

We are BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE after a third of the season. Keane has had his every whim indulged, spent millions, and look where we are. Look what we have to watch. And you wonder why people doubt Keane.

You cannot determine if the new players are worth the money paid for them 15 games in to a new season!

I am with superblueflude - and therefore backing Keane. I agree that Martin has looked lightweight but a friend of mine (Hull supporter) saw him in the Premiership last season and said he looked fantastic. Healy cost us nothing so doesn't count. I believe that the signings of Leadbitter and Edwards have been excellent and Rosenior on loan is good (and he looks committed - witness his applause of the supporters/lap of honour on Saturday). I have been a fierce critic of Delaney but he may yet come good at centre-back, which is much more his natural position. I would start with Priskin, with Pablo playing in the hole and Walters wide, for a couple of games and see if they can develop a partnership (and use Wickham, not Stead, off the bench). Begovic has been an inspirational loan signing and is superior to (and younger than) Wright (for whom I always had the greatest respect, but has been error prone this season).

Any team can beat any other team in this division which remains wide open. That doesn't necessarily mean that we can reach the play-offs but there is potential for us to move in the right direction under this leadership and with this squad.

Ok we are bottom but this league has proved year after year that it is the tightest league in the world, 13 points of the playoffs we get 3 wins under our belts and we'll near the top half and the playoffs will not seem out of reach.

I agree with dobbie (as usual seems to have a good head on his shoulders) this is an evolution more than a revolution Keanes got 2 years remember and we should keep the faith!!

superflude i so hope you are correct buy i cannot suspend common sense in desperation for success. We are bottom, bad signings have been made, curious selections have been made etc My last word on the Wright issue is that Keane said he never had any problems with Wright so he must have been left out on form/ability which i still think, given the other options, has been a mistake. There are a lot of things i like about Keane i.e. his composure and intelligence when interviewed but he has underperformed woefully thus far.

Superflude have you considered that we may be picking up a few points here and there at the moment because we are playing the worst form sides in the division apart from ourselves ?
As for Delaney one ok game and that is all it was, against a very poor injury hit Derby side, and a number of very bad games does not make him a good signing .
Stead got nothing in the first half because we were poor and didnt create anything , i know who i wish had for the one on one with Bywater .
You keep repeating yourself about when we win against teams and go on this run ,what if and it is an if we lose to Reading we will then be 5 points away from safety ? Quinn was poor in the first half and lucky that Trotter was worse or he could have gone off , Keane again picked Trotter and played Quinn left and Walters up front it has not worked all season .
I do commend you on your optimism but Watford game aside we have been average against average sides ,it is nothing to do with luck about other results we are bottom because we have been the worst side in the league for a third of the season
