We all hate reading about some of our favourite players leaving, but for me newspaper gossip has many good points as well as bad.

Imagine waking up and reading that your job is under threat - you'd go in a bit low on morale but you'd also go in with the mindset of putting your head down, working hard and making your manager realise that their making a mistake.

Well for me this is the same in football. This week for instance, there was gossip of Town going in for Barnet striker John O'Flynn. A striker for Town reading this, maybe, just maybe will realise that they need to work harder, make those extra runs, put in the extra training etc.

It's the same for any other position on the pitch and that is why I welcome these gossip chasers and look at the other positives as well, they provide a great discussions among supporters. They also make you laugh with some of the links they actually come up with.

So embrace the gossip, discuss it, don't get down-hearted by it all. I know certain supporters hate the gossip column as they prefer facts - Why? Facts are not always 100% great either, look at the Daryl Murphy transfer - one minute on then off then on then off. But these were facts.

Just thought I'd write to show my backing to the gossip columns and ask for more as I for one find them very interesting.

naa added 14:34 - Nov 12 Just to be annoying I would agree with the statement that facts aren't always 100% great. It's a fact that we're in the relegation zone with only one win so far this season, having played all the fellow relegation contenders in some way or other. But I do agree that commenting on pointless gossip can be great fun and does bring up interesting conversational topics.

Taking the scenario about John O'Flynn, and how the Ipswich players push that bit harder . . . . .what about Barnet, and their players. It must be very unsettling to have these rumours flying around about players. The player themselves can't help but think about it (probably looking at a wage increase of 5 fold or more) and the rest of the team start questioning the clubs ambition. It would help though, if the papers, just occasionally, told us what was fact and what was random drivel used to fill their columns. But then that's like asking footballers to be truthful on the pitch

naa added 16:53 - Nov 12 Must admit, what I hate about the gossip machine is that papers print it as fact and at no point to they ever print retractions admitting they made it up or that their source was wrong etc. After all it is misreporting and, in some instances, libellous. Oh and they all claim their story to be exclusive, even if it's on the official club website, or reported the day before, or if all the other papers have it as well. Wish they'd get taken up more often on that one too.

OrkneyBlue added 18:57 - Nov 12 newspapers have to make profits like every other business and there is no better way than sensationalising a headline or story and making you buy the paper. I think the press can have way to much influence, one cleverly worded story about something quite innocent or not spicy enough can very quickly snowball and turn into an ugly monster, and if players read can lead to unrest within a squad. That's the bad side of the press, however we all like our club to be linked with players!!

PutYaBootsOnKeano added 21:53 - Nov 12 Thing is, there are many who cannot distinguish between fact and gossip - and then follow wild accusatory tangents that actually can be quite destructive. Is there any point in getting riled/speculating over something that was conjured up from nowhere? Then you're just like Frank/George Doberman from Harry Enfield - OI, KEANO, NOOOOO!! For those in control of their thoughts, Gossip columns are a damned pleasure, and provide good facetious conversation all day long. I love a bit of gossip. Just hate it when it's hijacked for a secondary purpose.
