it's one of them 3G pitches. It has some sort of rubber crumb component, made out of recycled material. This is supposed to contain carcinogens and, because of this, 3G has been banned 9I think) in some countries, whilst at the same time is being installed all over the place here.
For Maidstone, it means an all weather surface and a stadium which can be used for lots of other events. Sutton FC have one as well, I read an article about Sutton before their FA Cup win recently explaining that they have no ambition to go up the league ladder, just to be a moderately successful community club & the 3G pitch is part of that ethos.
