Romford's racing preview - Cheltenham festival - Day 1 18:17 - Mar 13 with 11924 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

The waiting is over. The week that horse racing fans around the globe have waited for since the jump season began 6 months ago is here. Antepost bets have been placed (see my antepost betting preview from yesterday) , the bookmakers’ offers have been taken and now the fun begins.

Only antepost plays today are Altior in a few multis and My Tent Or Yours each way at 33/1 in a few each way multiples.

1:30 — Supreme Novices’ Hurdle
Every year Willie Mullins has the favourite for this who is usually short in the betting based on the great trainer’s opinion. None more so than this year as Melon is around 3/1 in the betting despite only running in England once beating horses that wouldn’t get anywhere near this level. He may well be a superstar but after just one run — a race of which his jumping was a bit snatchy at times — he can be opposed today. The connections of Ballyandy will be delighted to see that Moon Racer is now going to the Champion Hurdle as he has finished behind him on two occasions this season. Moon Racer would have been my selection and so the close second on both occasions deserves respect. He also finished in front of another absentee who would have been high in the market but for injury (Movewiththetimes) in the Betfair Hurdle which was a quickly run race that looked absolutely suited to him. He should get something similar today and there looks to be far more substance to his form than the favourite. However, I have sided with BUNK OFF EARLY who I believe will relish the drop back down to a stiff 2 miles. Only outstayed by the smart Bacardys over 2m 2f in the Deloitte Hurdle, he should get a quick pace to take aim at up the hill. His cruising speed and genuine fluency since his switch from the flat should stand him in good stead for this kind of race and he could be the one to be on in the opener. Remember SkyBet are offering money back as a free bet for losers in this race from £5 to £20.

2:10 — Arkle Trophy
It would be arguably the biggest shock of the week if last year’s Supreme winner ALTIOR doesn’t win this. He is the best novice chaser in training and has an engine that should blow these away by the time they have got to the hill. He has scared most challengers away and if the mighty Douvan got injured, he would have gone to the Champion Chase and likely gone off at odds on. A mouth-watering matchup between those two awaits next year. The one for the forecast is the tougher question but I would side with Royal Caviar for the Mullins yard over Charbel who was easily beaten by Altior at Sandown in December. In all honesty, daylight looks most likely to be second behind the 1/4 favourite.

2:50 — Ultima Handicap Chase
This race looks like a typical Cheltenham handicap and one where I had backed Champers On Ice antepost (goes for the 4-miler instead). You could make a genuine case for most of these and so its 8/1 the field. The Druids Nephew won this in 2015 and looks as though this was the plan all year with the one run simply to get his handicap mark down. He could go well. Un Temps Pour Tout was my only handicap winner of the festival last year but is the top weight today and this looks tougher. Holywell was a valiant second that day and is weighted to run a big race as he likes it round here. Singlefarmpayment is well fancied by many and could still have more to come off a mark of 146. Instead, selection goes to the other improving novice in the race in LABEL DES OBEAUX who can reverse form with the market leader as he has improved immeasurably since then and it wasn’t his best day. 22/1 each way is a fair price with some bookmakers paying 5 places.

3:30 — Champion Hurdle
This could’ve been a fantastic renewal had even half of Altior, Yorkhill, Min, Annie Power, Vroum Vroum Mag and Faugheen made it but through injury or going elsewhere, none of these have made it meaning this looks an open renewal. Buveur D’air was a good third behind Min and Altior over hurdles here last year which has worked out well. He looked a high class hurdler in patches this year and could be as useful as YANWORTH who ran wide when beaten by Yorkhill in the Neptune last year which is also good form. He was magnificent in December when winning the Valuable Christmas Hurdle against a good field and there could yet be more to come. For the sake of my daily multiple, I will be siding with the latter. With both looking like running big races, the value could lie each way with the consistent MY TENT OR YOURS being my horse at 33/1 each way. He likes it round here and has placed in this race previously including last year when second behind Annie Power despite being off the track for over a year. Brain Power steps up in class but looked a high class handicapper this season and could be the surprise amongst the field. Moon Racer must be going well at home as he runs here rather than the Supreme.

4:10 — OLBG Mares’ Hurdle
Vroum Vroum Mag perhaps harshly was labelled the supersub and had multiple options this week but runs here to defend her crown. A good winner last year, whilst a game winner last time out at Doncaster when just beating Midnight Jazz (who herself takes her chance at 66/1). LIMINI won the inaugural running of the Mares Novice race last year and I backed her in a multi (which has since gone down) for this race at decent odds (8/1) after the race. She was mightily impressive again when beating a race fit Apples Jade. The latter gave one of the best performances of the season last year when winning at Aintree by a distance and the drying ground should go in her favour. The front three in the market makes this the most competitive and classy mares race in many years.

4:50 — National Hunt Chase
Whilst I was disappointed with the decision to send CHAMPERS ON ICE (NAP) here rather than in the Ultima Handicap, this race in hindsight looks far more suited to the course specialist as he stays all day. He could be one to watch for the 2018 Grand National if taking to the fences but looks a good bet today at 8/1. Edwulf could go well for JP McManus but this is a step up in class. Bigbadjohn stayed on over 3m 1f recently but that doesn’t automatically mean he will stay today whilst Beware The Bear and A Genie In A Bottle look big dangers and could be more than useful in 2018 over the extreme distances.

5:30 — Close Brothers’ Novices Handicap Chase
If GOLD PRESENT takes to Cheltenham, he could run a big race in the lucky last on day 1. A solid performance behind a good sort last time, the Nicky Henderson import could run a good race. Two Taffs will be better suited to the drying ground than his last run on heavy at Warwick and similar can be said of Its’afreebee. Foxtail Hill will run his race off the front but is up a further 7lb in his search for a hat-trick.

Day 1 bets:
1:30 — BUNK OFF EARLY @ 11/2 - £6 to win
2:10 — No single bet on the day but ALTIOR in a multi antepost
2:50 — LABEL DES OBEAUX @ 22/1 - £3 EACH WAY (5 places)
3:30 — YANWORTH in the daily win multi and MY TENT OR YOURS in an each way multi antepost
4:10 — LIMINI — In the daily multiple, could back her as single at 13/8 potentially
4:50 — CHAMPERS ON ICE - £5 to win at 8/1
5:30 — GOLD PRESENT at 12/1 to win - £3

10p trebles (£3.50) and 7 fold from the 7 selections for £3.60 total

Cheers Rommy - I'm sticking my mortgage payment this month on an acca based on this so it better come in.

Or I might just have a 20p yankee (I like your tips for the 1:30, 2:50, 4;10 and 4:50) so it's fun to watch a few races tomorrow...

That's just been tipped up on the At The Races Cheltenham preview event actually

Certainly a bigger price than I'd have expected for a former Paddy Power Gold Cup winner

Oh right. I see it's trained by the Champion Trainer and he's got a 5 lb claimer who he's using in all the handicaps and there's another one of his he said later in the the week same jockey and owner whose name escapes me at the moment.

I hadn't come across CDB in my hamdicap researching as if yet but I'd seen him in a couple of videos of past races when looking for other horses

I remember when he won the PPGC and he looked a good jumper

If he was to run to that form, he would stand a great chance.

When I said about Holywell having festival form (a major positive for me), I had got that from remembering before last years race

His form is 2 Pertempts hurdle wins, a gold cup fourth and then last years second in this race.

Huge contender tomorrow

Top work Rommers!
Cheltenham for me beats all other meetings/festivals next come the Craven and Guineas meetings at Newmarket

NH racing has changed with the influx of wealthy owners with massive strings and the Super Yards of Mullins etc.. This, I believe has resulted in the non-handicap races becoming dominated by market leaders. Do a 4 way accumulator on the favorites in the 1st, 2nd 4th and 5th races
One thing that hasn't changed is that previous Cheltenham winners repeat.
Hollywell could run a big race but his form has been nowhere near previous seasons. If Singlefarmpayment wins watch the money pile on Beware the Bear in the 4.50. BtB beat the former at Ascot earlier this year.

Glaring EW in the opener, Amanda gets the pick of the flat horses in the yard to play with and won this race way back when her dad was still training the likes of Dancing Brave

Enjoy the day

Beware the Bear is certainly an improver

I don't like the craven meeting to be honest. Too many average races

For me it's:
1) Cheltenham festival
2) Royal Ascot
3) Derby/Oaks meeting
4) Champions day at Ascot
5) Glorious Goodwood

For the spectacle and entertainment factor, they are my top 5

Perms on The Druids Nephew, Yarnworth, A Genie in Abottle and Itsafreebee for interest, and a single on Melon in the first on SkyBet.

I've not done any research at all this year, but I'm sure I'll be swept up in it today and do some more detailed stuff for tomorrow.

You need to get yourself over to Galway in July - the finest Irish meeting like a Royal Ascot meets Cheltenham. It's truly magic

Used to go every year a true blast

In terms of the big ones I've been to:

I highly recommend the Ebor festival at York. Looking forward to heading back there this year (and the Sky Bet Stakes in July). Of the bigger racecources, York is my favourite I've been lucky enough to visit.

The National was good, but not sure I'd rush to go back compared to other meets.

St Ledger - strong feeling of 'meh' for me.

But, the smaller days are often more fun in my experience. But each to their own.
