Although there were quite a few white acts singed to Motown. Kiki Dee, R Dean Taylor, Teena Marie, Frankie Vakki and the Four Seasons, to name a few.
Did they all come later, seem to remember an ad in Melody Maker (1972'ish) where Motown were making a bit of a thing about signing Rare Earth? Had a listen to one of their albums at the time, couldn't see the attraction myself.
Edit: Must have been the blurb on the back of the album cover, I was thinking 'Indiana Wants Me' must have been earlier than 1972 so I looked up wikipedia -
'Rare Earth Records: Established in 1969 after the signing of Rare Earth (after whom the label was named), Rare Earth Records was a subsidiary focusing on rock music by white artists. Notable acts included Rare Earth, R. Dean Taylor, the Pretty Things, Love Sculpture, Kiki Dee, Toe Fat, The Cats and Shaun Murphy (both solo and her collaborations with Meat Loaf). The label also was the subsidiary to house the first white band signed to Motown, the Rustix.'

Rare Earth were a Norman Whitfield project. They usually did rock versions of songs he had written for Marvin Gaye, the Temptations and the Undisputed Truth. Berry Gordy actually set up a subsidiary label called Rare Earth for rock acts but it didn't last long.
R Dean Taylor was the first white Motown act by three years, unless you count Nick And The Jaguars who were signed to Tamla in the late 50's.
Kiki Dee came in 1969 or 1970, around the same time as Rare Earth. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons signed a couple of years later producing the Northern Soul favourite The Night.
