Well, who's job was/is it to ensure we didn't end up with no defence? I'm already sick of hearing this excuse...a good manager plans or finds a way to deal with it. Or counterbalance it by offering more attacking threat, like playing a hot winger. [Post edited 9 Sep 2017 21:02]

It was pointed out we were short when Berra left. Smith and Webster have been injured for the last 9 months on and off. Seems ironic that we were begging for a right back for 3.5 years and the second it gets sorted we don't have a centre back. |  |

You can't say that, however the club had someone signed even though Brighton were struggling to get someone in - that should've set the alarm bells ringing, but they chose to ignore it. That's when contingency plans are then used; that doesn't apply to us clearly!!! |  |

There no point buying in any old CB. Whoever came in had to be an improvement on what we already had available.
So yes it is a case of what we could afford. To get any permanent improvement in say Berra costs nowadays upwards of 3m. About the amount that ME currently subsidises the entire wage bill. So we now make do until one of our three CBs returns. | |

Yet again the target for a lot of the vitriol on here is misplaced. I have issues with MM over some team selecting but the recruitment policy is down to how the club is financed. We have an owner who has decided what level he'll support financially. | |

Exactly this. There are no excuses for the failure. We had since May to replace Berra. Offloaded Taylor and Digby. Knew that Webster was injury prone and Smith. Unlucky with Chambers, but a CB should have been in a month ago. | | | |
