Fellow Veggies (please no abuse!) 20:47 - Aug 31 with 3115 views | Swailsey | I’d like your thoughts on this. I need a new couch as mine is frankly falling apart/defo sure its mouldy inside.. My parents have offered me their spare one for free. It’s a lovely one, great condition and better than anything I can afford. Trouble is, it’s leather. My last one was too, but since I got t before I was veggie I didn’t want to throw it away. Now, I absolutely wouldn’t buy a new leather couch (personal choice, no offence meant to non vegetarians/vegans etc), but am I overthinking it and would I be crazy to not accept this very generous offer? I know some people make exceptions for second hand leather but.. [Post edited 31 Aug 2019 20:48]

Fellow Veggies (please no abuse!) on 20:50 - Aug 31 with 3090 views | ElGuaje4 | I think it’s probably acceptable if it’s second hand. I bought second hand shoes that were suede but wouldn’t buy them brand new from a shop. It might be hypocritical but sometimes it has to be done.
Fellow Veggies (please no abuse!) on 20:52 - Aug 31 with 3072 views | Rozz | I'm fine with leather products (within reason) if they have a long, purposeful product life. The cow is dead, the sofa already exists. It would be greater injustice to me for it to be sent to landfill.
Fellow Veggies (please no abuse!) on 20:54 - Aug 31 with 3060 views | GlebeTractor | If you don't eat it, you won't have a problem.

Fellow Veggies (please no abuse!) on 20:58 - Aug 31 with 3040 views | wkj | IMO The couch is already dead and already purchased, so is it any better on the scrap heap than in your home? If you like, give it a name and get some high pile green carpet so it gets to live a comfortable after life, just don't try and milking it, unless you fancy getting a support worker assigned to you.

Fellow Veggies (please no abuse!) on 20:59 - Aug 31 with 3023 views | Pecker | My Wife is a veggie, but buys leather goods. There are different levels on this subject, so it is totally about your personal views. Some only count food product while others consider all animal products. Like I say, it is down to your own personal choice.
Fellow Veggies (please no abuse!) on 20:59 - Aug 31 with 3021 views | brogansnose | I'd take the couch. You are not causing any further loss of life and prolonging the life of the couch rather than it going to landfill ( potentially ). I personally think you're good to go, saying that as an ex vegan too.
Fellow Veggies (please no abuse!) on 21:00 - Aug 31 with 3019 views | eireblue | Seems reasonable. Only other alternative I could think of is that you sell the leather sofa, and use that to buy veg friendly one. I kept a leather jacket my mother bought me before I was pre-veg*. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Sounds like a lot of effort for the same net result. Someone will be sitting on the leather couch. It might as well be him.

Yep, but sometimes nice to have options rather than dilemmas.

What are they replacing it with? If it's another [new] leather one are you somehow encouraging their buying habits? Or is that bo11ocks? Edit: didn't notice you said it was a spare. No problem is there really; as others say the thing already exists so neither here nor there. Maybe the cow could be brought back from a sample like they're considering doing with a woolly mammoth. Any other couch you purchase which is new will have a higher carbon footprint than the one you are receiving from your parents so that is a positive you can look at. Apart from that you haven't instigated the death of any animals, that was done a long time ago when the couch was new - you should take it and reflect you are doing even more than usual to combat the issues the world faces. Yes, but doesn't he have to collect it by yacht to qualify?

I think as long as he uses wooden rollers like they did to build Stonehenge then we are all good. SB
