following the sad news yesterday have been or who are your favourite commentators?

I feel lucky even to remember John Arlott,
Bill McClaren was an excellent rugby man
Gerry Harrison is worth a mention

and of the commentators around nowadays I actually really like Brenner Woolley

Yes, I enjoyed his commentary too. The only problem I had was that one minute it would be coming out of my left hand speaker, the next it be the right, that Mitchell Johnson; his commentary sounded not quite right.

Richie will always be my favourite. Bowed out on a high at the end of such a memorable Test series.

Ted Lowe in the good old days of snooker

Although the sports finest one liner of a whispered "good luck mate" at the end of this didn't come from him -

Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh for Gaelic ( loved the way he would have his children helping him in the commentary box in later life ). Retired at 80 and still going strong.

For rugby Bill McLaren

and Cliff Morgan

For Rugby League, Eddie Waring

The common thing with them all is passion for their sport.

Alan Green on Radio 5 - great knowledge, said it as he saw it, and not afraid to give his opinion. Made every match entertaining , however dull it was!

I can't listen to Alan Green - absolutely awful.

Cliff Morgan - what a good man, great player and general good egg. Thank you for reminding me of him.

I think the thing that unites most of these "voice of (insert any sport)" commentators is that 99% of them were on the BBC & back in the old days, BBC had 90% of live sport, so the memories were more about familiarity rather than exceptional ability, as their voices were inevitably associated with memorable moments. I'm no Rugby League expert, but friends of mine who followed the game closely didn't think much of Waring & believed that his easily parodied commentary did nothing to advance the appeal of the game.
